  1. I had to give it only a 4, since the question was about the "original soundtrack"... which to my mind included everything on the CD. I don't particularly care for any of the non-JW songs, apart from the Platters' "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes"... and even that gets dinged because the beginning of it is a very harsh cut. Sounds like it's halfway into the first note, to me. As for the score... I think it's some of the most beautiful music Johnny's ever done. I think partly because I'm attaching some personal memories to the score and the film, but I really hold this in very high esteem overall. There are some standout moments others have already mentioned, but for me, even the slower, less bombastic tracks really, really work for me in this one. Lovely stuff. I've never regretted buying this CD. It's funny, but usually I'm more into the big bold bombast stuff from him... Maybe it's because of my personal connections that I rate it so highly. (If it was a question for just the score alone, I'd give it a 4.5... not quite a perfect 5, but very close, IMHO.)
  2. I know it doesn't necessarily mean it hasn't shipped. But I mean, and no offense to non-North American-ers, but how the heck do Europeans get their copies before someone in the same country from which they're being shipped?
  3. Mine's still apparently "In process". I probably wouldn't be so annoyed about it, were it not for the fact that people living in another continent across the frickin ocean have already received theirs. Like, a day or two ago already. Sigh.
  4. I agree, it almost feels like "The Raiders March" is overqualified, for lack of a better word. My Top Ten, in no particular order... and yes it was very difficult, I adjusted it several times... The Map Room: Dawn Desert Chase Marion's Theme The Miracle of the Ark Slalom on Mt Humol Bug Tunnel/Death Trap The Mine Car Chase On the Tank/Belly of the Steel Beast (OK, so I cheated and picked two here, but I figure if they could combine them in the film, so can I!) The Jungle Chase Finale (KOTCS) (possibly mainly because I enjoy JW's development of Marion's Theme) Honorable Mentions: Anything Goes, Fist Fight/Flying Wing, Broken Bridge/British Relief, Journey to Austria (I know it's short, but I really like it!), A Whirl Through Academe, Nightclub Brawl
  5. OK, so people in another continent already have it? And I don't?? Sigh...
  6. Do we have another TPM "Ultimate Edition" on our hands?
  7. I know it'll make it here sooner rather than later. It's just nice when there's actual updated, current tracking info. Oh, well.
  8. Hmmm. Order status is still "in process". Purchased 6-1-10 at 10:32am. Sigh.
  9. I hope that jab wasn't pointed in my direction because of the rim clicks discussion...I apologize if I came across as overly critical or something. I thought we were just having a fun discussion about what instruments make what sounds. Nah, I'm just messing with you guys in general. I took your comments in the spirit in which they were intended. Just making a general comment about how internet forums get that way.
  10. If I read this thread correctly (well, skimmed anyway), and those chorus parts from the final battle with Nero are indeed missing, that's extremely disappointing. They're quite a highlight in the finished film, and to have such a momentous moment of the score missing from the "Deluxe Edition" is a pathetic error. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. (I know how some of you guys get off on it.)
  11. Well, those are definitely not rim shots. I'll give you the slight chance that they're rim clicks, but rim shots are played by hitting the head of the drum and rim simultaneously with the same stick. The result is TOTALLY different. I suppose it's possible that they're just playing normally on the rim of some sort of drum, but I highly doubt it. What type of drum makes that sort of sound? Certainly not anything with a standard metal rim - not a snare drum, not a tom-tom. Congas and the like have a VERY different sound on the rim...so do timpani... It's gotta be one of the two string techniques mentioned above. For instance, check out . Starting around 2:08, you'll hear some of the same techniques. And in , you hear one violinist playing col legno alone. Or right at 0:48 in , you hear the cellos playing a weird, dissonant chord that's marked slap pizz in the score. (I'm referring to the percussive click at the beginning of that passage, not the normal pizzicato jittering in the violins and violas.) OK, granted I used the wrong word, it should have been rim "clicks". However, I've been in concert bands and marching bands/drum corps where percussionists make the very same sound by doing rim clicks on standard concert or marching drums. It could be a combination of percussion and string hits, I'd buy that.
  12. I was assuming you meant the bits where the wind instruments drop out briefly after their quick intro bit, and the percussionists are hitting their rims with their sticks. But I could be wrong. Right here at 0:11 - 0:13 is the best example. Or here at 4:07, it is that percussive clacking you here driving the tempo. Yep, percussionists doing rim shots.
  13. The only episodes that have let me down this series have been the terrible Dalek episode and the dull as sh*t first part of the Silurian story. (Enjoyed the second part more, though.) The rest have ranged from amazing (Eleventh Hour, Time of the Angels/Flesh and Stone, Vincent and the Doctor) to pretty good (the rest bar my two least favorites). Every series has had its ups and downs. I completely disagree about this series being "one hell of a letdown". Was anyone else put in mind of by the trailer for The Pandorica Opens? Or is it just me?
  14. I was assuming you meant the bits where the wind instruments drop out briefly after their quick intro bit, and the percussionists are hitting their rims with their sticks. But I could be wrong.
  15. The one that's always bugged me is the trumpet hitting the long sustain in Last Crusade / "Belly of the Steel Beast" at 3:59. It's horribly flat, to the point where I would think it would have justified another take. Ooh, yeah, forgot about that one!
  16. I was just about to mention FYEO. I never had a problem with those underwater scenes, and it wasn't until years later I found out they weren't actually filmed underwater. It did make me appreciate the effort that went into it to achieve the look, however. I do recall thinking, "Did Roger Moore really film those underwater?" back in the day, but never knew for sure it wasn't underwater.
  17. I like the look of the book design. Much better than the Blu-ray type DVD case I was thinking they were talking about. Do not like the fact that it has minimal liner notes. But do releases for recent films actually ever have liner notes as detailed as those we get for older "archive" scores?
  18. Wait, so this thread isn't about woodwinds? Ba-dum-dum. Thank you! Tip your waitresses! But I digress... There's a moment in the The Fist Fight/The Flying Wing track from Raiders, where I swear I can hear a brass instrument, possibly a trumpet, come in about 2 beats early, realize his/her mistake and stop, then the actual entrance occurs. I don't have it handy for the track time, but I believe in the film it's near where Indy and Marion notice the fuel and fire getting dangerously close together. I think it's a bit less noticeable in the recent Concord release, but that always stood out to me, even on my old LP version of the soundtrack.
  19. Thanks, guys! Good to know! Will make it just that little bit extra special, methinks.
  20. They redelivered today, it is here! Hooray! Can't wait to listen tonight!
  21. "Vincent and the Doctor"... Confidential was also really good this week, lately it's been mostly dull, with rare highlights, such as Beth Willis getting wet, the bus tour, etc. Next week's trailer really didn't inspire confidence, sadly...
  22. So is Anthony Daniels actually on tour with the show? Or is he just in some pre-recorded stuff? I would've assumed pre-recorded, but the post about the longhorns makes me think otherwise. Could never find any info for sure in official press stuff. I could be totally blind, though. We have tickets for the July 3rd show in our neck of the woods, so it'd be nifty if he was actually there.
  23. Our office is closed on Saturdays, so supposedly they left a notice, according to tracking. First time one of my CD orders has ever had that happen to it. No sign of the "notice" they supposedly left. Hoping they just plop it in today's mail, but we'll see. May have to swing by the post office after work. Which is frustrating. Sigh.
