  1. It was a TV documentary / movie about Boris Yeltsin, made by some friends of his. It showed some parts of his action, his thoughts, and more importantly 10 minutes (no kidding) of him, sitting at his desk, and thinking (or was he ?)... no moves, no actions, only a close up for like 10 minutes. Then, the end credits of that show was an enumeration of all his generals with their pictures... during 15 minutes... (Grotckov... Ivanof... Yorgensei...) LOL it was incredible !
  2. "Do you want luuuuunnnch ?????!" LOL
  3. --> me <-- Merkel You really should buy Immediadly this wonderful score ! PBL the Fury
  4. Funny... i was interviewed with a friend in a radio tonight about a concert I'm going to conduct tomorrow... and the interviewer talk about film music and john williams, and at one point, the very same question: "but don't you think this kind of repertoire is only marketing, that for instance john williams write the same way for the film he has to score, due to a certain short amount of time he has to compose ?" I was pissed off inside... but... my friend and I argued: " well, it is true that certain amount of nowadays scripts are written the very same way: an action scene there, a love scene there, a pursuit here..." the very question is to say whether a composer uses tricks to compose a music to the scene... there are certainly a few composers that just copy and paste his music (and I forgot to mention Horner, what a shame), some other just use his experience and own knowlegde to give his best on a score... inevitably, and I'd say fortunately, you're able to hear whether it's Williams who composed this score or Newton Howard, or Morricone... that's what make a great composer recognizable. When you hear either sympphony from Brahms, you can tell its Brahms... even if it's not the same work... As a conclusion, i'd say Williams has several range of his music langage... let's speak about Schindler's List... what are the similarities between Schindler's List's music and Superman's ? What is the connexion between Sabrina and Close Encounters ? Jurassic Park and the Reivers ? Hopefully, film music composers do have a lot of different genre of film to score... that's what probably makes their style evolve for our own ears' pleasure only :)" End of answer. well, I hope I've answered well to this eternal question. Then I was a little less pissed off has I've seen a true and sincere smile on the head of the interviewer (who is by the way a very good violinist and musicien... but maybe a little too classical elitist... well not any more I hope )
  5. I've seen a CD somewhere last year... on a Fnac or Virgin... The DVD has also been released here... does it contain any seperate music track ?

  8. Who doesn't know this beautiful album ? Including two haunting themes (on the piano and the flute), with also a wonderful track "The Bicycle", which has a great impact with the scene on the movie ... I've just discovered this CD yesterday... I found it lovely. Anyone has this ?
  9. I've never noticed this quick reply thing until now... Well, doesn't change so much, does it ?

  11. True... Even the concert arrangement is so bad !! Nothing interessting, just effect and flare... That's another point... I find the song motiv too much repetitive to me, and lacking a real melodic achievement. But the interpretation is really good to me. That is one score I enjoyed during the 30 first minutes of the movie... then I get bored, and the score gets repetitive, lacking some really powerful high points (but the movie wasn't so good also imho...) For me, a soundtrack that wants me to throw my Stereo over my window is Willow... I just can't stand the perpetual repetition of the character's theme (the "Schumann one")... I find it particularery overrated... (even for a Horner score )
  12. Cool... which ones ? What the conductor famous ? good ? They're the best, but also the more expensive Tell me about it... Scherzo for motorcycle, The Asteroid Field or the Basket chase !! Boy, I'd like to conduct those someday in front of my orchestra...

  14. I've had the chance to conduct JW's music: - TPM Suite (Flag Parade, Anakin's Theme, Jar Jar's Adventure, Duel of the Fates (without chorus, but in June with Chorus (yeah !) ) - Star Wars Suite (Main Title, Princess Leia, Imperial March, Yoda, Throne Room) - Three Pieces from Schindlers' List - The Raiders' March - and in June probably Superman and Love Theme from AOTC (planning next year E.T., The Lost World and Close Encounters)
  15. Where did you find those videos ?? I would be interessted in having a copy of this tape.
  16. "Pictures at an exhibition" was composed for piano by Mussorgsky in 1874. Rimsky-Korsakov has made an orchestration, as well as Funtek, Gortschakov and Ravel (in 1929) (I guess many other as well). btw, there are only 4 horns in Ravel's orchestration.
  17. you both were faster than me !!
  18. 1. No idea 2. Maurice Jarre is still alive. He is only composing few film music (or does he ?). I think he only gives concert now. 3. It was Torn Curtain for which Herrmann composed the entire score. I have been told than Hitchcock only listened to the prelude, and then fired Herrmann (some friends of his has unfortunately convinced him to add more jazz music, rythmic music in his films... and get rid of Herrmann symphonic music). This score doesn't appear in the movie. You hear John Addison's music instead. That's a real pity, especially for the incredible orchestration of Herrmann's music: 16 french horns, 12 flutes, 9 trombones, 2 tubas, and more cellos and basses than violins !! You can hear some extracts in the Esa-Pekka Salonen / Los Angeles Philharmonic Bernard Herrmann Film Scores CD (Sony Classical 2001)
  19. Great post Thanks a lot, Incanus. I will listen to this album a 3rd time very deeply 8O PBL "Pictures at an exhibition" Mussorgsky performed by Vladimir Horowitz (live 1951: the best)
  20. I remember this chat perfectly, because I was there to chat Unfortunately, all my questions weren't picked up by those who chose what was to be asked. PBL
  21. Don't you mean the 6th part? Justin -Who thinks Star Wars is a 6 part story, that can stand alone as a 3 part or even 1 part story. Don't you mean "is a 9 part story" and we'll only see 6 parts of it, unless Lucas does a sequel in 10 years from now, or let enough notes about it so that someone would direct the 3 remaining films...
  22. Oui, j'ai lu cet article... et je connais bien la personne qui l'a écrit. A vrai dire, je suis opposé à 100% avec ses arguments. Je trouve que pour les novices, c'est justement un peu frustrant, même si le spectacle est garanti. Quand au concert, je pense que Schindler est le moment le moins prenant... imo Well, I just went to the concert, it went great and had a great atmosphere.. Enguerrand played as an encore the Jaws theme, litteraly "within" the piano (pitching the strings to make a strange noise) then striking the whole low key notes to make a very powerful noise... it was wonderful... As a 2nd encore (the crowd went crazy), Enguerrand appeared dressed as Darth Sidious and played the imperial march... impressive... most impressive !! A wonderful evening soon in CD !
