True, but I like to think that Kubrick only thought of Spielberg purely because of the story's [somewhat Spielbergian] themes, and nothing more. Perhaps that is because the very last person who would be equipped to realise a Kubrickian idea, or POV, would be Steven Spielberg. Maybe. Or maybe Kubrick couldn't quite hack this story himself. And Spielberg made it faithful to the latest Kubrick version, which at the time wasn't really done, script-wise. There are some interesting bits spilled on this matter here.
