Richard Penna 3,694
At the culmination of my Western US trip in September I'll be spending 3 days in the L.A. area, and one thing I want to do is seek out some soundtrack scores, and preferably any specialists. Anyone have any recommendations? I'll have a car, so getting places isn't a problem. Also, out of the usual touristy/celebrity stuff, is there anything actually decent? I probably won't be coming back to L.A. anytime soon, and I want to make the most of it from a film-making perspective.Plus I'd love to meet up with any JWFanners around those parts too
Datameister 2,044
I'm afraid I can't be of assistance with the music stores. The touristyy stuff generally is quite touristy. But it can be fun. I haven't done a lot of sightseeing there, even though I've spent most of the last couple years living in west LA. (I'd love to meet up with ya, except I'll be up in the Bay Area. =/) There are definitely filming locations you can visit; I recently headed over to The Office's Dunder Mifflin, which is actually the Chandler Valley Studios in Van Nuys. Walt Disney Studios and ABC are located in nearby Burbank, along with several other studios...it really just depends on what you want to do. There are the standard tourist traps in Hollywood - I actually did a few of those a couple years back and enjoyed it. I also saw a JW concert at the Hollywood Bowl and visited Griffith Park to see some Back to the Future shooting locations. There are a lot of shooting locations to be found in the LA area...you just have to know where you're going.I'm rambling. Not really going anywhere with this. If there's anything you're particularly interested in, perhaps I/we can be more helpful?
Richard Penna 3,694
Well I'm gonna go to Universal Studios, and perhaps a Warner Bros tour, and want to see the Griffith Observatory, but apart from that, it's just somewhere I want to explore and see what day to day life is like. It just happens to be the end point of my trip so I decided it was worth sticking around for the weekend.I'm not interested in celebrity stuff - walk of fame, house tours, etc, so I won't be doing any of that. But as you said, there are so many filming locations to see - I guess that's part of it.
paleo 63
Hey, I have been to L.A. last week, and there are certainly a lot of things to do. I don't know any soundtrack stores, but Universal Studios is a good idea... the studio tour is, well, touristy :-), but a lot of fun (I was very happy to see props and sets used in the Jurassic Park, BttF, War of the World, Psycho, King Kong etc. etc. movies, and the actual theme park (with the Jurassic Park, Simpsons, and Mummy rides as well as the Terminator 3D and Waterworld shows are really recommendable (particularly if you are interested in films). The tour from the Observatory to the Hollywood sign must be very nice, too (I didn't do it yet), and one place that's been used as film location and is - at least for Paleo ;-) - generally of interest, is the La Brea Tar Pits with the Page Museum and Pleistocene Park.Nice beaches are near the Santa Monica Mountains/Malibu and the Crystal Cove State Park near Laguna Beach.Downtown L.A. is not very nice and at night pretty scary... we tried to avoid it as best as possible. Hope this helps you...

Datameister 2,044
Universal is definitely fun. Hardly a full-day experience like Disneyland, but it's extremely cool to see the sets and so forth on the tram tour. There are a handful of worthwhile rides and shows, too. Koray Savas 2,251
I'm not interested in celebrity stuff - walk of fame, house tours, etc, so I won't be doing any of that. That's what I did when I went there. Stood on the stage of the Kodak Theater! Saw the Chinese Theater, and Ozzy Osbourne's house. I know I did other things, but I can't remember. Richard Penna 3,694
At the culmination of my Western US tripI think I asked this before, but what other states are in your itinerary?I'll be going through/touching upon Washington and Idaho (I hope to go through, maybe even stop at Wallace, Idaho, where Dante's Peak was filmed). And properly visiting: Wyoming, Utah, Arizona, Nevada and California. It's a 2 week trip and seriously energetic.La Brea tar pits... I think I saw them in Volcano. I definitely want to see downtown, but I plan on sticking nearer Hollywood or somewhere higher with decent views at night - I've been warned that every major city has its 'no-go' areas at night. I used to visit the stores in San Francisco and Berkley, and they are awesome. Found many rare gems. I have never been the Hollywood location yet (I'm only an hour or so away), but have heard great things.Hope this helps! http://www.amoeba.com/James
