 Last year they were very similar. I don't know this for sure, but I think that they may be less similar this year because in L.A. David Newman is conducting the first half, and at Tanglewood the first half is conducted by Ken-David Masur.

short anecdote: Ken-David Masur is, of course, a son of conductor Kurt Masur. Another, older, son of Kurt Masur, Michael Masur, works as a piano tuner in Berlin and tuned my piano in 2019.

No disrespect to David Newman as I was really looking forward to seeing him conduct too, but that's awful news to me. My wife, who is travelling with me to the US in the summer, has never seen John Williams live and it was supposed to be our first concert on a different continent. Without wanting it to sound selfish, I hope it's nothing serious. I wish the Maestro a swift recovery!

Not knowing the details of his situation, I am still a little hopeful that JW might be in attendance at some level (even for just a wave).  But we shall see.

I don't think so.  It is an awesome setlist.  I am a sucker for the Fugue for Changing Times (the scherzo is extremely good as well).  I would love to see those performed as well--hopefully this will lead to a rediscovery to how great the pieces are.  

 

Funny that Wide Receiver and March of the Resistance were both played--they are twins.

Having heard it live tonight, I have to say it was great. The people I was with had no real knowledge of the NBC music done by JW. They all recognized most of it, and they all enjoyed it.

 

Meet the Press was a treat knowing that it is a premiere this weekend and also because it sounded great. (Really, the whole concert was amazing, and the selection of non-Williams music fit perfectly into the whole flow.)

Oh wait. The version performed in the concert is a newer version. Oops I didn’t listen carefully enough. It does share the revised beginning with the 2016 version, but beyond that, there are pretty significant differences.
