  1. I'd say Lincoln had a much better shot at winning than TFA. It was to a critically adored, non-sequel, dramatic movie with a real shot at winning more "major" awards (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor). There were no scores with obvious advantages that year (unlike, for instance, 2011's The Artist). I'd be very surprised if TFA won. It's rare enough for fantasy scores to win Best Score, let alone sequel fantasy scores (with RotK being the exception).
  2. Nice find on all those themes starting w the first three scale degrees. Do you think that's jws way of indicating that the force permeates all aspects of the SW universe?
  3. 1) Han and Leia 2) Imperial March 3) Duel of the Fates 4) princess Leias thene 5) Luke and Leia 6)across the stars 7) main theme 8) anakins theme 9) battle of the heroes 10) rebel fanfare 11) force theme 12) droid federation March I'm not including set piece themes, but if I did the arena and asteroid field would definitely make it in there, along with some others
  4. I'll be crossing my fingers for a Dex's Diner reprise.

So anything from TFA sound familiar?
  6. ^hey, that could structrally fit in the SW universe, ala across the stars/Luke's themes
  7. This scene is probbaly the best of the prequels, and I think rivals the highlights of the OT also
  8. No...a $50 donation to the right charity could save lives
  9. This may have been mentioned already, but anybody else notice how loudly the woodwinds are mixed in the end credits relative to the brass? Since we have 6 alternate mixes from the previous films I'm glad we have this new version...but otherwise might bother me.
  10. Well duh. The whole point of this site is to state and argue opinions, and we're not always going to preface them with an "in my opinion..." because most of the time that goes without saying. Also, if memory serves, this whole debate started when some of us expressed disappointment that the HSS would be replacing the LSO for TFA--absent any statement about one being objectively superior over the other--and you attacked us for being biased, etc. If your point this whole time has been that there are legitimate differences between HHS and LSO, and you just don't think we can use these differences to determine objectively which is better than the other...then you're not in contradiction with us.
  11. I saw the movie yesterday and really enjoyed it. Music was great. More easily accessible than TFA (surprisingly) so hard to say which is better...but if I was I was only going on first impressions from the movie, morricone would take the cake. Which pieces were not original?
  12. Yup agreed. Hollywood studio musicians did a good job, but te result is predictably less good than the LSO prequel performance.

  14. While numerous aspects of the prequel trilogy were poorly executed, I've always thought the ideas behind the films were interesting, and in particular the political struggles. Both the political commentary (IE Chancellor Palpatine being granted emergency powers in the face of war), but also the glimpse into the bureacracy of the Galactic Senate (IE Chancellor Valorum's inability to cut through the bureacracy and resolve the Trade Federations' conflict with Naboo). I recognize that these political debates are not really very OT-ish, but I still find them interesting (perhaps because I'm a political junkie). Anybody else with me?
  15. Perhaps the most original film composer. From what I understand, herrmann laying the foundation for American minimalism is one of the few examples of film music being ahead of the concert hall on progressive new musical techniques

  17. 1) ROTS 2) AOTC 3) TPM 4) TFA but TFA could rise over time...I'm still warming up to TFA for the hell of it: 1) ESB 2) ROTS 3) AOTC 4) SW 5) TPM 6) ROTJ 7) TFA
  18. Hmmm...that would mean palatine had sex around the time ROTJ was set...
  19. I don't think it's even the main reason. Why wouldn't Chewie shoot him after that? Oh yeah I think it makes perfect sense for chewie to try to shoot him...just seems awfully convenient that this is the one time a laser actually hits a main character
  20. Totally agree with the instant-Jedi criticism. I think it's plausible for the reasons you said, plus the fact that their adversaries are not very well-trained either. Like they're either facing off against stormtroopers or amateur Jedi who are wounded (this is presumably the only reason they show Chewie shooting Ren after Han's death). Remember Snoke said that Ren's training was not yet complete...I guess he can be good at some things (IE using the force) but mediocre at others (swordfighting). It's enough to squeak by the plausibility test...but just barely. On a similar note, too much deux ex machina. Like the fact that the Falcon just happened to be on Jakku, right where Rey and Finn were running, unguarded, and unassaulted by the First Order when every other ship in the area was blown to pieces?
  21. I think it works with the whole pseudo religious force thing, and the religious allusions in SW. Like how priests aren't allowed to love cuz they're supposed to have a relationship with God
