Do you guys enjoy animation? I'm not an expert on the subject but have watched several nice shorts from all around the world recently (my mate is hosting an animation night in a local gallery). Some of this stuff is really amazing - imaginative and bold.

Do you have any favourites? Share them in this thread!

And here's a trailer for one nice Polish animation, combining techniques of oild painting and CGI:

Great thread!

I could really overload this post with YouTube videos, but I'll go with this hilarious little stop-motion from 1912 about a beetle who cheats on his wife with a dragonfly.

I agree with what you said about animated short films, in general. It's such an expressive medium and without the financial imperative of a big budget feature, animators can really produce some stunning work that gets across a variety of incredibly complex, surreal, and abstract ideas that live action filmmaking could never get away with. It's really worth getting into for cinephiles, a lot of this stuff has expanded my ideas of what movies can do more than anything else I've ever seen.

Cool! You asked for it! :D

Two of the best from one of my favorite filmmakers, Norman McLaren

Some beautifully expressive work by Frederic Back

I loved your mention of "Billy's Balloon", Don Hertzfeldt's stuff is so great. Outrageous.

This one, Tale of Tales, is really one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. It's often compared to Tarkovsky, and rightly so.

Lotte Reiniger's shadow puppet animation is quite fun and interesting. Her feature The Adventures of Prince Achmed is fantastic, the oldest surviving animated film, and her work was also the inspiration for the Three Brothers segment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.

My favorite scene from Prince Achmed:

And of course all those countless great Chuck Jones, Walt Disney, Tex Avery, and Bill Melendez (Peanuts) cartoons, along with this childhood favorite that gets better and better every time:

Just watched this little masterpiece, truly wonderful. I love the character animation reminiscent of the Nine Old Men and also the silent and slow mood the short has. Amazing:

Anyways, I remember when some of this footage minus sound leaked a year or two ago, and he begged to have it not distributed. It's really quite well made, full of nods to the TIE Fighter games.
