  1. John Williams isn’t slowing down the tempo for his health.. he still conducts fast tempi on OSTs etc. Just my thoughts are that the Vienna Philharmonic are so unfamiliar with the pieces that slow and together (yes, together) was a better option than fast and the pieces completely fall apart and then with no way to get the orchestra back together. The Vienna Philharmonic’s lack of familiarity with the pieces was the main factor that constituted to the slower tempo choices, not Williams being “old”. In my opinion. Fire away all those miserable enough to be disappointed with this once in a lifetime event
  2. I know what you mean here. The “mechanical” feeling and atmosphere in some sections.
  3. Not sure how it is for the rest of the world, but "Devil's Dance" just dropped at midnight UK time. It sounds spectacular and I am actually liking Mutter's playing.
  4. Looks like this: http://www.jw-collection.de/start.htm
  5. This is SUCH fabulous digging work and really helps!!! Cannot thank you people enough.
  6. Hi everyone, Trying to piece together a bit of missing history regarding a concert JW gave at the Royal Academy of Music in 1996 as part of their American Music Festival. Has anyone got any memorabilia, programmes etc or any information regarding this concert?? Seems like there's a great gap in my knowledge regarding this. Thanks guys
  7. Only annoyed about Dartmoor and CE3K - but those can wait til the album :-)
  8. Anyone got any ideas on how I might be able to stream Monday’s broadcast in the U.K.? VPN the only logical way?
  9. The whole album was a bit of a joke to me... you'd think the winning combination of Dudamel/LA Phil/Williams would produce GOLD but for some reason this weak album was a bit of a let down. From most of the recordings I've heard them do it just sounds like the brass section needs a bit more motivation.. esp for Williams' music. But of course the Vienna recordings will be absolute gold dust. JP and Imperial March have proven to be worthy interpretations so far. Can't wait for SW Main Title and Dartmoor. Thank you DG for getting it right this time round!
  10. One of the top musicologists working in Britain currently. Nice!!!! Great choices
  11. I know some people who regard TreeSong as one of the best violin concertos of the 20th century, and would probably be grateful if his “non-film” music was played more often.
  12. Fresh look at a short clip from Devil's Dance, as well as what looks like a new edit of the Imperial March, for some reason. Nice to see it's been done in 60fps. Note the dude conducting along at 0:40". Must have been off-putting for ASM to have that in her eye-line if she noticed him, but he is doing a good job of keeping time.
  13. I do think the low piano riff paired with the bongos in “The Hunt” gives it comic but unintentional Peter Gunn vibes
  14. If he were to return to Europe tt would unquestionably be for the LSO over any other orchestra
  15. Firstly - lets start to refer to the "drums" as percussion. Secondly, I don't think the score needed the added "21st century soundtrack" sounding percussion. Powell is not a disinteresting composer - not one of the greatest either though, but the score really could stand on its own without cheapening it with this modern take on Star Wars. The reason why it sounds so fabulous when Williams uses percussion like that (think the opening chase of Attack of the Clones, or maybe Chrome Dome?) is because he uses this soundscape so scarcely. His music is good enough to stand on its own without Hans Zimmer in the background, and I don't think the majority of the Solo score needed them either.
  16. I’m so glad I could be at both. I feel like the Vienna set was filled with more rare gems that I really won’t hear as often, and also in some places, was more grounded in what JW may have thought was “better” music for the environment (ie the presence of so many ASM moments and the Shark Cage Fugue) as well as the crowd pleasers we had in London.
  17. Some of them I do. Her performance in the Musikverein was dodgy by all accounts, mostly because her main aim was to project to all four corners of the hall, but I do admire the virtuosic writing from Williams in his new arrangements, especially Potter. With something like “The Duel”, we’re getting basically the same orchestral arrangement but suited for solo violin, whereas with the Harry Potter arrangement, we’ve got all sorts of new textures and colours from the orchestra we’ve not heard for the Hedwig’s Theme so far... Although it was the original plan for the concerts in 2018 I suppose - or maybe one of the many variations of a programme we got for 2020
