John Powell's PAYCHECK (2003) - 2021 2CD Varese Deluxe Edition
blondheim replied to Jay's topic in General Discussion
Oh. If that's all, then I'm probably fine. Unless this turns out to be a little exhaustive of an experience and then maybe we will see about a one disc presentation. These new Powell expansions are mixed incredibly well. I am having a hard time getting used to Coming Back Around because I listened to the original mix so much and it's SO forward. The drumline just wailing. But every other cue sounds so much better on the new release of Dragon. Paycheck will give me a chance to get used to this new mastering first so that doesn't happen again. -

What are the differences between the album and the extended versions of some cues? Do I need both releases? -
Discovering John Barry for the first time/Bond Theme authorship
blondheim replied to blondheim's topic in General Discussion
I appreciate the suggestion but I would rather not start with the City of Prague. I don't find their performances to be emotional very often and apparently John Barry is quite the romantic. -
I really am not familiar with John Barry's work. I couldn't hum a single theme of his off the top of my head, unless you consider the Bond theme his. I would like more information on this. Not that it matters too much but I'm curious. As for the rest of his work, I can't remember the last time I have ever seen a film he has scored other than a Bond film. Dances With Wolves as a child and never since. I would really appreciate suggestions. The major arcana, off-the beaten path, whatever; I know nothing. A compilation or two of incredible quality would be nice for a sampler maybe? I have a lot of free time recently. The reason I have never gotten into John Barry was purposeful but silly. I absolutely adore Basil Poledouris and I was sore about what might have been had he scored Dances With Wolves. I am sore. However, it is not John Barry's fault and so therefore a silly resentment. I hope the quality of the music is good enough that I won't feel the twang of bitterness when I hear his name. I reiterate that I really don't think I know a single theme. Unless Bond's is his. Is it?

So the UK release seems to be an error. It attaches Betrayal after a brief pause and then every subsequent cue is off by one. There is an additional track called Robo Tips His Hat which is a repeat of Care Package (called Clarence Frags Bob on this version) . The two versions of Care Package sound a little different, but one may just be slightly louder. All in all, a mistake.

It's a very short fanfare version of the RoboCop march with clanging percussion and a staccato trumpet line at the end. It's short. The Intrada version uses the crescendo to cut to the pulsing chords of the first part of the march (from I'm guessing Rock Shop) It's not a bad transition, I just miss that brief ending to the original cue.

I'm not saying you are wrong. That one was less of a difference, I was merely curious. The other I had heard but thought I'd check on them all, just in case. So does the Intrada version of Across the Board end early? At 1:30 the cues are different. I am wondering exactly what the assembly is on that track
-
I have heard it and it seems to have Force Shoots Robo attached to it, although I wouldn't know enough to know about takes, etc. The 2:28 version I thought would perhaps have a stinger attached, maybe a source music cue, but I hadn't heard it to confirm. Good on Intrada for fixing that End Credits edit. The Intrada sounds fine to me as a complete release although I will probably check out the Milan vinyl at some point in the future. Thanks for the info. I wonder why that extra cue was included in the UK release of RoboCop. I wonder what the story is there.

https://www.discogs.com/Basil-Poledouris-Robocop/release/12882765 And when you say assembly of repeated music, why aren't the actual finale and end credits used? Also, I had heard that the Milan CD was transferred from higher quality elements, you are saying that is not true?

So I noticed that Across the Board has been all kinds of different lengths on different releases. I've seen 1:50, 2:28, and 4:08 before the complete release. Can anyone explain the differences to me?
