  1. I mean, with both Redman and Matessino credited as producers, how could the scores end up sounding increasingly pinched?
  2. Mine: I used to find Double Trouble quite annoying, but now I really like it!
  3. JW's a master composer of marches, but not every march he's written is gold. What's his most annoying march, in your opinion? I nominate March of the Villains!
  4. It's time for the poster that is in fact John Williams to reveal himself. Is he @Stefancos? @hornist? @Incanus? Or could he be hiding as @Thor? That would explain why Thor always prefers the OST. I'll reveal that I'm not John Williams.
  5. I'm still not convinced that I need it in my collection. Besides, it's available on Spotify if I feel the urge to check it out again.
  6. With so many JW expansions to have come out the past few years, are you feeling less excited about them?
  7. Looks like the DSO is going to stream tomorrow's concert for free at https://www.dso.org/live. After a few days, it will appear on their new replay service (requires a min of $50 donation to the DSO). They say they have 3 year streaming rights to the concerts (although it's not specific about the one tomorrow). Program includes the Oboe Concerto (the original recording of which will feature in the new The Magic of John Williams Special coming out on the IndyCast next week), Liberty Fanfare, Pops on the March and selected film music led by Leonard Slatkin. I suspect the Oboe Concerto will be released in the Slatkin/Williams Concerti series. (See my post about the Tuba Concerto.) A John Williams Celebration https://www.dso.org/ShowEventsView.aspx?id=4916&prod=4914 Sun, Feb 10 from 3:00 - 5:00pm EST Artists Leonard Slatkin, conductor Alexander Kinmonth, oboe For five decades, Leonard Slatkin has championed the diverse music of America. This three-week festival begins with a cross-country musical travelogue of sorts from Morton Gould, Joan Tower, Leonard Bernstein, and Virgil Thompson, plus Ferde Grofe’s colorful Grand Canyon Suite, and continues with film and concert music by John Williams. 9. Looks like Naxos Portara records is releasing their 5th John Williams Concerto on February 8, 2019 - the Maestro's 87th birthday. Leonard Slatkin once again leads the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, this time with Dennis Nulty on Tuba. Amazon is showing the digital-only release for $2.67 as a pre-order and Apple Music has the third movement available now as a preview (which is an odd choice as it is supposed to be continuous with the 2nd movement). (Have not checked Spotify or other sites.) Sometimes sites like eclassics.com sells uncompressed versions of these. (They have 2 of the older ones.) I know this piece was performed in 2014 in Detroit (along with the Flute Concerto), but I am not sure if this is that same playing. Amazon Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MG56GK1/ref=pe_385040_112047530_TE_DP Apple Music preview: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/john-williams-tuba-concerto-single/1449279307 Interestingly, when I added this to my library, the other two movements are visible but grayed out (presumably they will become active on Feb 8). I believe this will be the 8th recording released of this work (including the Charles Vernon bass trombone rendition from 2005). The artwork continues the style of the other concerti in this series: FYI - they have previously released: Horn concerto, 2010 Violin concerto (revised version), 2011 Cello concerto (2012 revision), 2015 Five Sacred Trees (bassoon concerto), 2015 On Feb 9 and 10, 2019, the Detroit Symphony is playing the Williams Oboe Concerto (with a live web stream on the 10th). So, I guess we will get this as an official digital release in the next few years. Link: https://www.dso.org/ShowEventsView.aspx?id=4915&prod=4914
  10. Is it better than The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and/or Revenge of the Sith? As much as I love the score to The Force Awakens (and yes, it's a grower), I don't think it's better than any of the 3 prequel scores. At most, it's on the same level as ROTS (the weakest of the prequel scores, IMO). The 3 prequel scores, though not necessarily the movies, are instant classics. Not sure yet that TFA actually has that sort of longevity and impact. TFA, in my opinion, lacks strong set pieces like "Duel of the Fates," "Across the Stars," and "Battle of the Heroes" as well as standout action pieces, like "Star Wars and the Revenge of the Sith," "Zam the Assassin and the Chase Through Coruscant," and "The Droid Invasion." What do you think? My ranking (at this time): 1. The Phantom Menace 2. Attack of the Clones 3. Revenge of the Sith 4. The Force Awakens
  11. John Williams has a lot of influences, almost too many to take in at once. This thread then is really about appreciating some of the composers who came before him. The question I have for you is not "who were Williams' influences?" but "who of any of Williams's influences seems to lend to what you most love about him?" Who's that composer who, in a way, inspired you through Williams' music? If you're not sure how to answer, name as many as you'd like, but try to narrow it down to what styles from which composers might it be you love so much
  12. The Chicago Symphony has released their 2017/18 schedule and John Williams is returning to conduct a series of concerts on April 26-29, 2018. See more at: http://cso.org/ticketsandevents/production-details-2017-18/chicago-symphony-orchestra/john-williams-returns/
  13. Hello, all! I noticed something while doing a project. In Jurassic Park, there is a cue titled "Goat Bait" that corresponds to the scene in which the tour cars stop at the T-Rex paddock and it doesn't show. It's a very atmospheric cue with no real melody, and it syncs up to the movie perfectly. This cue went unused, sadly. The other day, I was doing a project in which I put music in the T-Rex breakout section, just to see how it would sound. I figured that for the suspenseful opening with just the footsteps might sound good with the "Goat Bait" cue put in. When I put it in place, it synced up perfectly, almost like it was written for that scene specifically. I mixed it in and will attach that video in the replies. Please forgive the quality, my setup isn't exactly the greatest. I'll put the versions with the dialogue muted in the replies. I can't help but wonder if JW planned this or if Goat Bait Scene 2 Mixed.mp4 it's just a crazy coincidence. Hope you enjoy! Goat_Bait_Scene_1_Mixed.mp4
  14. The intention of this thread is the exchange of information about synthesizer, the creation of sounds and the electronic modification of synthetic or organic sounds. Whether you wanna recommend or ask for a great synthesizer model... Whether you wanna explain or ask for the creation of a specific synth sound... That's all up to you. My first question is: Does anyone know about any criteria that are helpful to recreate... the "wind synth" from The Philosopher's Stone, the "drop synth" from The Mummy, and the "pyro synth" (or "synth fart") from Rambo: First Blood Part II?
  15. JW is usually very good at singling out themes which deserve a more fulfilled arrangement if not given in the movie, like (finally) Marion's theme. My nomination for an extended treatment is Qui-Gon's Funeral. To be super clear, I'm referring to themes which only exist as "incomplete" arrangements.
  16. Hi everyone, i try to made little video about being thankful for John´s amazing work. Thanks to your JW.com, it has been my home page for many years And this is how John Williams changed my life: ______________________ My childhood wasn´t good and I was feeling verry lonely. There was some unreasonable agression i had to experience from others. Also parents divorced verry badly and i had some serious depressions when i was about 12 years old. It may sound oversensitive, but this is really how it was. During the day i had to live my life, but in the night, before i fell a sleep. I was listening to John Williams music and i felt like - this is my true friend. His music was my best friend in that time. That music gived me feeling that someone likes me. Without this "musical friendship" i think i might not be here anymore. I was 13 and i started to play and write music. It was my childhood dream to become composer one day like he is. I was studying music a lot, 6 years conservatory in Prague, than i got to Berklee, but as i was accepted, i realised that - the music i would love to compose, my brain simply cant do that well. Before this realization i was feeling verry sad, anxious and jelaous. Because i was studying so, so hard and so many years. I couldn't understund why- if i am studying so hard - why the God or whatever there is or isnt, why it won't allow me to do it. I wrote some pieces for orchestra and one of them was this piece inspired by John´s music (this is the piece i called Autumn letter - because it was in Autumn i sent a written letter to John Williams about my story and (that my dream is to meet him one day) But once i realised that in real world of movie music everything must be completed so fast, i realised, that the time come. Time to give up on my dreams. I simply wasn´t that good, that i could work in industry. My brain was wired differently and i couldnt handle all stress and being creative under stress. I had to decide. And i left music completely. For 2 years i was just "man without dream" i felt useless in the world. I didnt know what to do. But than.. a miracle happened. Answer for my letter came and one lovely family behind ocean helped me to make it happen. It was possible for me to meet John Williams and to talk with him personally in his room. The first thing he sayed to me with verry sweet voice and present look in his eyes was: "Ou.. ou.. you came all that long way across the ocean JUST because of me? " He looked surprised and i realised how really humble this man must be. When he invited me to enter, he turned his hands up like there is nothing he has to hide. We talked about music and questions i had since i was young. He was so open to me. Finally in the end, his friend tooked a picture of us. That foto you can see in this video - and since that time, the light came into my life. I knew this moment was really gift for me from "universe" or whatever we call it. And i finally understud, that there exist people with so much talent that its not possible to try to be like them. Not to compete with them, but to accept it and start to enjoy everything they do as a gift to humanity. I came back to home and since that time i forget on being composer. I started to learn to paint with oil and its so funny. All that time, it seems i am better at Art as just a hobby, than to write music. My life is so happy now and i can really enjoy other people's art. In the end i realised every little thing was part of my life puzzle. When i was feeling so down, suicidal child, there came his music to me and it gived me „hope“. And once i was strong enough and i was somehow "prepaired" to face the thruth. The thruth appeared and i accepted it. I began to be 100 procent honest with my life and give more space for others than before in my hearth. This was the gift, that John Williams gaved me that day. That day i wont ever forgot. The day of sunrise of my true soul and the sun set of the "past". John Williams has really some higher spirit. Some healing power for us all. He is our life teacher. Today i love my parents, my friends, i love the world. Thank you! Thank you so much my friends
  17. As expected, it will be released the same day as the movie, and will be just one disc: https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Last-John-Williams/dp/B0758KSWZK/ Currently, there's a placeholder cover, although given what the cover looked like for TFA I wouldn't be surprised if they just add "Music by John Williams" and give us that.

  19. Hi there, I've made a cover of the original Jurassic Park main theme. Check out my video cover here on YouTube: I figured you guys on this forum would like it. I'm a big fan of John Williams and have been making music for 20 years. This one isn't my best production or cover, but it was a real challenge for me because I only re-made it by ear.
