Well, this poll has such an easy answer!!!! THE BEST FILM SCORE EVER:

EMPIRE........OF THE SUN!!!!!!!!!!

EMPIRE OF THE SUN

Simply the best. The best work of the eighties. The best Williams' work. And the best music written for a film ever.

I have a feeling this will be a runaway vote: "The Empire Strikes Back."

Shoulda won. Sigh. Oh well.

For me its E.T. which is by far the best score. followed closely by Raiders, then Temple, then Empire, then Empire, the Jedi.

Joe, who is pleased that E.T. is holding its own against the somewhat overrated Empire Strikes Back score.

ET doesn't have the scope and variety and dramatic content of TESB and ROTJ.  :P  Thought it is brilliant.

well, we'll just have to agree to disagree on that one. comparing the scores is kind of difficult, since ET is totally different structurally than any Star Wars film. i love the the Star Wars scores, but i think that ET (from an Oscar perspective) works the best in its film and is far more worthy of a best score Oscar than ESB or ROTJ.

Morn you are probably right about scope and variety, but you are soooooo

wrong when it comes to dramatic content.

E.T. wins that hands down. Nothing in ESB or ROTJ is more dramatic than that last hour of E.T., not even close.

Ohh? Nothing makes a better finale than Rescue from Cloud City/Hyperspace. Full of darkness and tension, lovely. :P

You said it!! The BAFTA crew at least had the sense to reward this 'Best Score' anyway! Shame on you Academy!

Jim's New Life & Toy Planes Home & Hearth are two of his most remarkable compositions. But wait, then there's 'Imaginary Air Battle', 'Exultate Justi', 'Cadillac Of The Skies'..........or darn it, the complete score is magnificent! :)

Except, of course, "Adventures on Earth," which represents the finest fifteen-minute marriage between music and film in history - which is why E.T. will retain the lead in this poll until it's over and done.

- Uni....who also agrees that Empire of the Sun is one of the finest works of the 80's.

As dramatic content goes, only Schindler's List can really rival E.T.

Only Schindler's List?

You forgot Empire of the Sun, Born on the fourth of July and A.I.

You mean Return of the Jedi and Empire Strikes Back. :)

I?m not saying all those otther scores aren't moving. But E.T and Schindler's List (and a track or 2 from ROTJ: the dark side beckons and LIght of the Force) are the pinacle in emotional scoring in JW career, IMHO.
