Popular Post Thor 7,515
Amazingly, I couldn't find a previous thread for this composer, who is my 5th favourite of all time, and IMO the greatest European film composer currently living and working in Europe. Anyways, he has a new non-film album out today, but apparently it's only available on his own streaming platform. Haven't seen it so far on Spotify or YouTube, for example. Maybe later. But from the samples, it sounds gorgeous! https://store.preisner.com/melancholy eitam, Yavar Moradi, Once and 1 other 3

Popular Post Thor 7,515
Top 10: 1. VALLEY OF SHADOWS (for Norwegian director Jonas Matzow Gulbrandsen) 2. The Secret Garden 3. Bleu/Rouge/Blanc (I see them as one work) 4. La Double Vie de Veronique 5. Dekalog 6. The History of Eternity 7. It's Not Too Late (another non-film work) 8. Olivier Olivier/ Europa Europa 9. The Beautiful Country or Aberdeen (both for Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland -- my neighbour! -- and equally good) 10. Fairy Tale: A True Story (the theme here was famously used in the A.I. - ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE trailer) For starters. You might want to pick up his concert work "Requiem for My Friend" too, dedicated to his late collaborator Kiewslowski and used stunningly in TREE OF LIFE, for example. eitam 364
I love his work too, thank you @Thorfor the tip about his new album ! To the ones you've already mentionned, I'll add Silence Night and Dream, and 10 Pieces for orchestra (both non film). Cristian Lee 35
Great composer, his music is melodic with great use of piano and strings. My favorite scores: 1. It's all About Love 2. Lost and Love 3. Menachem & Fred 4. When a Man Loves a Woman 5. The Beautiful Country 6. Anonyma, Eine Frau in Berlin 7. Aglaja 8. Bleu/Rouge/Blanc 9. Feast of July 10. Naïve Old Fart 9,549
I've heard REQUIEM FOR A FRIEND, and I like it a lot. I find DEKALOG painful to watch, but I'll seek it out, again, if only for the music. JTN and Thor

The Secret Garden I concur with Thor; this score is a masterpiece which I grew up with. Unfortunately, the Varese album is only about half the score and leaves off a great deal of the darker material that I like better. But try this cue on for size, for something really lovely: Yavar Once, Thor and Edmilson 2

Richard Penna 3,694
I'm 99% sure I was taken to see The Secret Garden at the cinema as a kid but I was nowhere near the age that the music would've left any lasting impression. The track above is pleasant enough and I'll give it a whirl on Spotify (Varese's 30-minuters strike again I see) although if it's essentially just a half hour of flowery piano/string/woodwind material it may not be my thing. Although Doyle did what sounds like a similar sort of thing with All Is True and that's one of my favourite scores.

So… it’s honestly not just a half hour of that material, but I will sadly admit that the Varese album does focus much more on that material and only has a little bit of the great darker stuff that permeates the film. A Deluxe Edition release would do wonders in terms of reappraisal of this great score. If you view the film again and then revisit the Varese, you’ll notice giant chunks of musical story and development are missing. Popular Post Thor 7,515
I don't know what's missing or not, or "dark elements" left out etc. It's been ages since I saw THE SECRET GARDEN. It's not really something I care about. All I know is that the wonderful Varese CD captures the child innocence and rite-de-passage wonderfully, through many permutations. When it comes to Preisner, he's better served in smaller, or should I say REASONABLE, doses. There's a lot of repetition and singular mood elements that are better served in 30-40 minute doses. If people want an expanded release, that's a-ok with me. However, I was happy to bring up the score two years ago, in a Zoom chat with the composer (a lifelong dream, btw). I think he's pretty proud of it. Once, Yavar Moradi and JTN

It's such a unique score in the mood it creates with the female voice, piano and strings it has a fascinating effect on me. Also I like how Preisner uses silence and pauses to create mood. "It's Time" is one of my favorite cues of all times. Jurassic Shark
Thor 7,515
Interesting selection as your number 1, Christian. I haven't played that much, but you've prompted me to do so again. But glad to see other gems on your list, like LOST AND LOVE (beautiful Caldera release) and FEAST OF JULY (although some of the folksy elements I've had to tone down). Thor 7,515
Sure is! I've loved it since I first saw the film in the 90s, but I've only had a digital file release for the last 10 years. Then, just a couple of weeks ago, I FINALLY got the ol' CD release of VERONIQUE. Feels good to finally have it in physical format.
Cristian Lee 35
These days I listened for the first time to the album Our World released in 2017 and it's great, after a few listens it quickly became one of my favorite. I have no information about this project I couldn't find anything about it. The album consist of ten suites which are quite long, 6 or 7 minutes. I like this because it's departure from other Preisner's scores when we have short cues. Preisner use some of his material from other scores but I also hear new music. I think I need to remake my top 10 and include this album because it's amazing! I recommend this for any Preisner's fan. Does anyone else listened to this album?
