A twist on an all too familiar question...

What are your top dozen favorite scores? In other words how do non-Williams scores relate to Williams? Is your favorite non-williams score no. 53 in your overall list? Or is it battling for first place? If you crashed on a desert island and could only take a basket with 12 scores and a CD player what would you bring with you? Take to your lists people.

01. Raiders of The Lost Ark (Williams)

02. Star Wars (Williams)

03. Star Trek - The Motion Picture (Goldsmith)

04. The Empire Strikes Back (Williams)

05. Superman (Williams)

06. Star Trek II - The Wrath Of Kahn (Horner)

07. Dances With Wolves (Barry)

08. Back To The Future (Silvestri)

09. Conan The Barbarian (Poledouris)

10. Batman (Elfman)

11. Night Crossing (Goldsmith)

12. King of Kings (Rosza)

I was really surprised by how impossible to answer I found this question to be. This is a list that I would not stand behind in open court, and one subject to constant change, and one that does not answer what you wanted to know. But here's a very limited selection of scores always worth mentioning off my top 75 score list (it goes without saying that this is in no particular order):

The Rock

Patton

The Fury

The Empire Strikes Back

Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone

The Last Crusade

Hook

Schindler's List

The Phantom Menace

Schindler's List

Psycho

The Good, The Bad, And the Ugly

Dragonheart

One interesting observation I've made- It's striking how much I love, respect and appreciate Goldsmith, seeing as there were only 3-4 scores I even concidered putting on this list.

Another observation, unrelated: Horner is sickening. I'm trying so hard to like the guy, but he is in a way the worst film composer in history. And in another way, one of the greatest. WHY CAN'T I JUST HATE HIM IN PEACE? WHY MUST HE TORTUE ME BY BEING SO GOOD, YET SO BAD AT THE SAME TIME?

you talk about Horner and you put on a score by zimmer, who is in everyway the worst there is, he makes Horner look like a God.

Because it's frustrating. He clearly has the talent, he's just lazy.

In no particular order, I present my list. Williams makes appearances in three of the twelve slots - more than any other composer (in fact, no other composer appears more than once). Williams has some competition for the top spot, though, as my favourite score of all time is really only my favourite score of all time temporarily - The Ten Commandments, Edward Scissorhands, Flowers in the Attic, Superman and The Boy Who Could Fly have all been my favourite at some point.

The Ten Commandments - Elmer Bernstein

The Boy Who Could Fly - Bruce Broughton

Flowers in the Attic - Christopher Young

Superman - John Williams

E.T. - John Williams

Jurassic Park - John Williams

Edward Scissorhands - Danny Elfman

Suspiria - Goblin

Signs - James Newton Howard

Gone With the Wind - Max Steiner

The Bride of Frankenstein - Franz Waxman

Koyaanisqaatsi - Philip Glass

You're just jealous.

of what. I own more Horner scores than I do Goldsmith(on CD, I have tons of Goldsmith on record), so I am a fan. Zimmer is to filmmusic as rap is to pop music.

A very debatable analogy there. Anyhoo, have fun with your Horner. I'll have fun with my Horner and with my Zimmer. Whatever takes your fancy.

What Zimmer have you heard?

Justin - Who enjoys The Rock but would NOT put it on his top 12 of all time. :)

Sheesh. ;)

I am really surprised at the number of members who dislike for Horner's Titanic. I think this is an absolute marvelous score and I would rate it highly. It's a shame that there is not a "Complete Score" available

I'll jump into the fray with my 12:

Star Wars

Empire Strikes Back

Superman

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Titanic

Gettysburg

LOTR-Fellowship of the Ring

LOTR-The Two Towers

Independence Day

Battle Of Britain

Gladiator

Conan The Barbarian

If you crashed on a desert island and could only take a basket with 12 scores and a CD player what would you bring with you?

I would take a Battery powered boom-box and then I would take:

01: Gladiator (Hans Zimmer), because the rescue boat or plane would be more likely to hear a loud, bombastic score.

after that, I would take LOTR, SW, and IJ.

I don't dislike it - it's an enjoyable score (well, I think it is anyway), just not in my Top 12......Deep Impact, however, most definitely is.....

Not in order:

Matrix Revolutions

Legend

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Total Recall

Glory

Krull

Willow

Conan the Barbarian

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

Empire Strikes Back

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Superman the Movie

Since three of the scores on my list weren't even out yet a year ago, I doubt that this is really a true reflection of my 12 favourites.
