The Best of 2004

Hey all. You may or may not remember the best of 2002 thread that I posted awhile back. You can see the results of that poll here.

http://www.jwfan.net/index.php?name=PNphpB...&highlight=2002

Anyway, for 2004 we've had a good year for Williams. Two very fine scores have been produced, not to mention several re-releases and re-issues. I've added in a few categories that don't have to do with Williams by all means fill those out too but remember to keep JW and Non-JW categories seperate. Every vote could count. I figure I'll tally up the results in about one week.

I'm suprised at how much attention Aunt Marge's Waltz is getting. From previous discussion on the board I wouldn't have figured it would get this many votes.

That's why I like to wait several monthes after his scores. It lets the cues really sink in, seperates the wheat from the chaff if you will.

A lot of people here have mentioned how good they think it is, but yeah it's getting a ton of support. Personally I prefer The Knight Bus in the comedy category, but that's just me. I thought Buckbeak's Flight would win best cue, but that's why we actually do the voting.

Strange that I never included a comedic category. But fine if people just want to make up their own categories...

Justin - Who doesn't think there's enough comedic cues written every year by Williams to warrant it's own category. (This year I'd say is an exception)

Although I am a devout Williams fan, I think the best score of the year was Giacchino's Incredibles. Regardless if its stylistic sources, it works amazing with the film. Better than anything else I've seen/heard...although my favorite score of the year is Yared's Troy. Followed by Shore's The Aviator and Williams' Terminal. I like parts of Harry Potter but honestly, much of it needs to be heard in the film as opposed to on its own.

There is some truth to this. Chasing Scabbers, Secrets of the Castle, or Lupin's Transformation are just a few examples of cues that could work better standalone. That is not to say it's true for the entire score.

I've tallied the votes and found that there are ties in 3 diffrent categories. Rather than have some sort of tie breaker round I'm going to extend the voting time by one additional week and plea with those that haven't voted to vote. Literally a single vote can count at this point.

Justin - Who will not divulge any winners at this point.

Actually Morlock, I like your results from the first post better. Yared's TROY had the best music of the year. Hands down. It's the most solid score I've heard in ages and dwarfs the competition. I've tracked "Achilles' Destiny" under the film and it's unbelievably moving. And functional. Hollywood focus groups and Warner Bros. really f****d us and the filmgoing public out of a truly outstanding score.

I like Williams Terminal score more than Potter which I find well written as usual but not terribly inspiring. "Jazz Autographs" on the other hand is one of Williams' best themes ever. Beautiful composition.

Giacchino's Incredibles is still my fave score of the year. I hope he wins the Oscar for it.
