There haven't been many series that Williams didn't see through till the end...

I don't know if JP3 is all that bad, but we can't assume that the movie will be bad because Williams isn't involved. Mike Newell is more then a capable director, and even though they went with the old effects team, doesn't immediately classify it as bad. I thought the trailer (which was all of 5 seconds) was decent, but nothing to get overly excited about (although the Harry underwater thing was cool).

Yes, I'm sure these movies sucked exactly because Williams didn't score them.

Marian - who didn't like the first Superman, the second Jaws and the second Home Alone too much, and thinks that Lost World sucks.

Harry doesn't look right. His hair is too long, and he's supposed to be skinny.

jeez, you girls bitch about the most unimportant things.

K.M.Pulling a Neil on the HP films.

no, Neil does it with style, you just sound like a girl with PMS.

Yeah, try a diet Daniel Radcliffe, you miserable glob of lard!

It looks like a set of a school play. The dragon also sucks, and so does the teaser trailer and teaser poster.Anyways it will suck since Williams isn't scoring it.Has there been any any "above mediocre" films in a series after Williams stopped scoring them?

Weren't those all sequels done for no reason other than to cash in on the success of the originals? The HP films have been planned out from the beginning. I foresee that your bitterness over JW not scoring GoF will prevent you from enjoying the film.

Ironic since Harry and Ron look suprisingly feminine.

Justin - Who will forgive long hair if the film is good.

um...

Read article

The young actors broke out in pimples during the shooting of the $65 million "Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire," and the heavy make-up only made the problem ...

They should have just left that stuff in...at least the younger kids watching the film could have related.

Then again, being magical and all, they would have just cast a spell to get rid of it anyway.

Honestly.. I think it's just well.. not true. I think it's funny that the three main stars were the worst affected. Idk.

As far as Harry being skinny, Radcliffe is just maturing and filling out, can't really help that. That's where there's a bit of the age discrepancy problem.

I rewatched POA this week, and thought he looked great in it, the hair was perfect there. They should have kept it that length, his is too long now. Ron is okay going with long hair as the more comical happy-go-lucky friend. Otherwise it still seems cool.

The tent scene is just one still, taken out of the context of the whole scene. The flags and stuff make it pretty colorful, it's alright...except for the hair. :?

There was a brief long hair craze that coincided with the filming of Goblet of Fire, as I recall.

Posted

So the filmmakers want to portray the trio as if the4y never really went through puberty in all its facets?

Posted

The book offers simple solutions to acne within the wizarding world.

And about the hair - it's not so much that I dislike the long hair per se. I just don't really like the very contemporary look.

It's a minor gripe, though, and I probably won't even really pay any attention to it once I see the film.

Posted

well they could have filmed it with a mid 1990's look, and they could have gone grunge, afterall it is supposed to occur in 1995.

HP really has no date.

Posted

Oh yes, it does. It's a bit inconsistent since Rowling mixed up a few days of the week, but a pretty close timeframe has been established as far as I remember.

I don't recall J.K. ever mentioning in the books a specefic year

Nearly Headless Nick's deathday party in the CoS takes place on October 31st 1992.

Posted

Yes, there are a few fans/fansites out there that have pretty much established the books as taking place in the early to mid 90s. I don't remember if JKR has ever confirmed this, but she's never denied it either.

Posted

Harry Potter was born July 31st, 1980 JKR has confirmed this.

What page?

US paperback of CoS: chapter 8, page 133:

Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington

died 31st October, 1492

They are attending his 500th deathday party, placing the events in the night of October 31st 1992.

Mr. Breathmask shall be known from this day forward as "HPFAN_3" thus supplanting the original "HPFAN" and "HPFAN_2".

All hail the new HPFAN!

Hold on a sec. He could have gotten that off some HP site and if he didn't i may not know every technical aspect of HP but i know it's deeper meaning, i have embraced it's very soul i tell you! So there! I am still supreme! :)

sorry but your just HPfan squared, he's HPfan cubed.

I never really liked the idea of Harry Potter taking place in a certain timeframe other than just "modern day." Yes, I know JKR included that date, but I always just assumed that was when she wrote that specific part or something. I just like thinking of it taking place in a sort of alternate universe. Thinking of it as already having taken place, like ten years ago, is just odd.

EXACTLY! I get so sick of people jumping up and down at Jo because she was accidentally inconsistent with a few dates. It's quite ridiculous.

As for the acne thing, they can't get rid of pimples THAT easily... Remember poor old Eloise Midgen? I wonder if she made it to the movie...

I also like to think of it in the present day.

well she is free to change it, when she revises it after completing #7.

Afterall C S Lewis made changes to his 7 book epic, Stephen King has made changes to his 7 book epic, Jo is free to do the same. Dickens and Twain did the same too.

Does that mean I have to buy all 7 again?

Dang it!

Justin - Who agrees with Ray about the whole present day thing... :)

It's probably better to ignore the time setting. There's some inconsistencies too. In one of the books it's mentioned Dudley had a tantrum and threw his PlayStation out of the window. At the time the book takes place, the PlayStation console had not been released yet.

That's the reason to take exact dates with a grain of salt. It's also a reason to NOT simply ignore the time frame though... Dudley having a PS in the first place limits it to a span of a couple of years.

Marian - seeing that Mr. Breathmask has read the same websites concerning the date discussions. :)

Posted

That's the one thing I remembered reading like over a year ago. I think it's in PoA.

Posted

Actually the Playstation thing is in GoF. He mentions it in a letter to Sirius, Dudley having a fit after being put on his diet.

Posted

Jo was actually off just a few months as the Playstation was released in Dec. 1994.

Posted

Maybe Dudley whined and yelled so much, his parents got an early release of PS from Japan. Why should ickle-Diddikins have to wait for the official release?

Posted

Book 1 says his 11th birthday is on Tuesday, 31 July, which is consistent with 2001, but not 1991.

Also, the cake was old old old. The party could have taken place any year.

Can't fight the keepers of the holy canon, though..

Just to add some weirdness to it, I'm just re-reading HPPS, and on page 92 (British hardcover edition), Sir Nicholas claims he hasn't eaten "for nearly four hundred years"... so does this mean he's been eating during his first 100 years of being a ghost?

Am i the only one here who thinks Rupert Grint's portrayal of Ron is very bad. Ron isn't some weakling who is the but of every joke. While he does provide humor for the trio he doesn't make silly faces and whimper like a girl. There is a reason he is in Gryffindor.

Posted

I agree that Rupert, in the first two films especially, is often incredibly annoying as Ron. As you said, always whimpering with some contorted look on his face. There's hardly any of the wisecracks and witty sarcasm that characterizes him in the books.

Ray Barnsbury

Yeah, but we're talking about an 11 year old kid. Chris Columbus, the director of the first two films, practically had to puppetier the children to get the right reactions. Take after take, forced edits, etc, to get the right reactions. I think the performance in the films is exactly what the director wanted them to be. I wouldn't think an inexperienced actor at that age had much say in the character development.

Columbus: Hey Grint, make a funny face!

Grint: Like this? (makes funny face)

Columbus: Perfect! Print!

I think he's very good. Yes, mis-using his character as the comic sidekick does get annoying in COS (and destroys the tension in the spider sequence)... but that's hardly his decision.

Marian - not the one here praising Columbus above Cuaron. :)

Amazon now has an image of the cover for the GOF game. Would actually be a nice movie poster, too, if there were more characters.
