JoeinAR 1,957 Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I prefer Futureworld to Westworld, but I see them as a tandem.yesterday I picked up On Her Majesty's Secret Service and For Your Eyes Only each for 7.99. Today I did pick up Titanic at Sams but it was only 9.98.I've got a bunch of movies to watch.
filmmusic 3,272 Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Just watched Temple of Doom in Bluray! It's in my top 10 favourite films of all time!Wow, these Williams' scored films surely benefit much from the Bluray presentation!! The music sounds excellent!! (as with E.T. . I haven't purchased Jaws yet..)I felt again I was watching cinema! This Indiana Jones Collection Blurays is a MUST for everyone!

Koray Savas 2,260 Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 It's a 3D sensual massage instruction video that doubles as porn. So?
Jay 46,245 Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Yea, what's the big deal? There's a gazillion porn blu rays out there
filmmusic 3,272 Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Yea, what's the big deal? There's a gazillion porn blu rays out thereI think the "problem" is that it's featured in that site. What's next? we will see a review about the video and audio quality??
filmmusic 3,272 Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 2 more Williams scored films come on Bluray in June!Midway and Earthquake!
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted March 20, 2013 Posted March 20, 2013 Midway is a very poor film. Earthquake isn't great by any means but it's much more fun and it doesn't have to withstand historic inaccuracies.
Koray Savas 2,260 Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Amazon has a sale on select Criterion titles as their deal of the day. Most notably The Game, for $16.49. I own all of them except for In The Mood For Love, so I may pick that one up.

JoeinAR 1,957 Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 why not sign up to B&N's website, it's free and they email me about upcoming events like their sales, of course having worked there for 10 years and knowing all the managers of the 3 stores near me helps too.Amazon has a sale on select Criterion titles as their deal of the day. Most notably The Game, for $16.49. I own all of them except for In The Mood For Love, so I may pick that one up.Do you know by any chance when B&N will have Criterion on sale again?will it be in November again as last year?on of the things that drives me nuts about a film like Midway is the gross errors within the filmThey rely on much stock footage and that's fine but towards the end they have the Japanese using Kamakazi tactics against the American fleet and that simply did not happen. If there was a continuity consultant on the film they really failed in their duties. You see a Navy Hellcat, Corsair, Helldiver, and Avenger at some point in the film and yet none of these aircraft participated in that battle. There is even a brief shot of an American battleship in the film, which didn't happen in the battle.perhaps the proposed remake will do a better job.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,392 Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 I preferred Tora Tora Tora to Midway. Also not very good though.
Wojo 2,458 Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 After the success of Tora, Tora, Tora's remake and Titanic, I keep waiting for them to turn the Challenger disaster into a romantic epic, too.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 too soon, Wojo, too soon.I'm going to Best Buy to pick up the Les Miserables Steelbook tomorrow and while I'm at it I may break down and get the Avengers super duper 3DLenticular set, marked down to 19.99 from 69.99.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 no but what I mean is the case it comes in is 3D, my next tv will be 3d but hopefully not for several years.

filmmusic 3,272 Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 Ah, ok thanks!I'll wait till then to buy a couple if i can..
pixie_twinkle 60 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I'm sure this question has already been asked and answered somewhere in the 100 previous pages of this thread, but to save me the weeks of trawling through them, can anyone answer me this?I live in the USA, and I want to be able to play region B (British) blu rays so I can watch them on my Samsung HD TV. How can I do this? I am particularly interested in the new UK blu ray releases of older David Attenborough shows like Life on Earth, and Trials of Life, which aren't available in the US format. Is there such a thing as a region free blu ray player that doesn't lose quality in the conversion? Or if the worst comes to the worst is it possible to buy a British blu ray player in the UK that will work on my US TV?Any help would be much appreciated.
filmmusic 3,272 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I don't live in USA, but there are free region Bluray players.Since BLuray discs don't have NTSC or PAL, there isn't any conversion!(this is only for DVDs)http://www.bombayelectronics.com/All_Multi_Region_Free_Blu_Ray_Players_s/72.htmanother solution:if you connect your PC with BLuray-rom player to your HDTV, there are softwares, that make the BLuray-rom region free.I know because I'm using them and have some Region A Blurays, although i live in a Region B country..
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 As filmmusic said, technically the only problem is region locking. That's a much bigger issue than it was with DVDs though. With DVDs, the CSS algorithm that's used to encrypt them was cracked very early on, and was considered too simple to classify decrypting a DVD as actually cracking it, even in countries where cracking an encryption is illegal. As a result, there were soon more or less official region free tweaks for most players, and most stores started selling the players in an unlocked state. With Blu-ray, the encryption is tougher. It has been cracked, but the industry is putting much more pressure on manufacturers. I bought a region free Blu player a couple of years ago, but the seller was shut down while it was still in the mail (I was relieved when it finally arrived). Later they issued a firmware upgrade that would lock my player to its current region. This last bit is important: I can just ignore the update, but it means that the player won't play some newer discs - I've only had trouble with two so far, but apparently there's a frequent issue with 2D/3D BDs and older firmwares. Also, while it's a good player, it has its quirks. Sometimes it won't read a disc on the first attempt, and it's somewhat on the noisy side. Consider the probably higher price for an unlocked player, and the hassle involved in finding and ordering one, and you might be better (and perhaps cheaper) off just getting a good player for your main region and a decent secondary player for the rest. Most BDs are region free anyway, so you won't need it all the time.
pixie_twinkle 60 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 So you think I can buy an American blu ray player and lock it to region B, so I can use it to play UK discs (and keep my main blu ray player for region A)? That would be a solution I could live with.
Marian Schedenig 11,695 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 No. You'd have to get one from Europe. But since region B covers all of Europe, you can get one from anywhere here.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,392 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Next time you are back in old Blighty!
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,392 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Well, you wont die without a second player! Stiff upper lip, that sort of thing! Chimminy chim chim!
Naïve Old Fart 13,026 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 I preferred Tora Tora Tora to Midway. Also not very good though.Agreed. "Tora! Tora! Tora!" is the better film, with the better score. It is a more interesting watch than "Midway".
pixie_twinkle 60 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 I'm as British as they come, Steef. No Viagra needed for my upper lip! I went ahead and ordered the two Attenborough blu rays (Life on Earth and The Trials of Life) and will figure out how to play them later. The price was too good on Amazon UK to pass up (11 pounds each!). It does seem odd they didn't release the middle series of the "Life" trilogy on blu at the same time, The Living Planet. I expect it'll come out soon though, it's as brilliant as the other two.
A24 5,157 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Talking about documentaries, I bought Frozen Planet for 10 Euros. Is that a good deal?
pixie_twinkle 60 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 That's an insanely good deal, are you kidding? Paid something like 40 US dollars for Planet Earth alone!
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,392 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Hmmm...did you really buy it Alex? For only 10 €?That seems a bit suspect.
A24 5,157 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Don't worry, I can prove it! The price tag is still on it. I bought it second hand, BTW.
Quintus 6,499 Posted March 24, 2013 Author Posted March 24, 2013 Planet Earth and Frozen Planet always hover around the tenner mark here. The Beeb's latest flagship doc, Africa aired here recently, have you guys seen it? It looked pretty epic in the endless trailers, but then again I'm bored to tits of African nature shows. There's only so many times you can watch lions take down antelopes. Their Madagascar on the other hand was fascinatingly new and pretty spectacular in places, well recommended.
Naïve Old Fart 13,026 Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 I have a quick Blu Ray question. I have just taken the plunge, and bought a Blu Ray Home Cinema set. DTS Master Audio - get in there, my son!Can any-one tell me which Blu Ray discs that they have, contain isolated scores, and, if so, if they are in Pro Logic, or true 5.1?A know of a few that exist ("Alien" anthology" - can't wait to hear "Alien 3" in 5.1!, the "POTA" anthology - ditto EFTPOTA!, "Superman", "The Fury", and...that's about it).I am particularly on the lookout for Williams, and Goldsmith iso. scores. Any help would be appreciated.P.s., are Blu Ray discs region specific, like DVDs?
filmmusic 3,272 Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 I don't think there is another Williams/Goldsmith iso score in Bluray.other iso scores I know are in all (except one or two) the Twilight Time label Blurays if you're into older scores.http://www.screenarchives.com/display_results.cfm?category=546yes, the bluray discs are region specific, but there are region free blurays too.It would be best if you had bought a region free player, but i don't think that's the case here, is it?
Naïve Old Fart 13,026 Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Thanks for that filmmusic (somehow, I don't think that's your real name).So..all the Blu Rays on that site have iso. scores. Cool!I will check, but I suspect that my player is region specific. Thanks, for the heads-up, anyway.

Cool!I will check, but I suspect that my player is region specific. Thanks, for the heads-up, anyway.i assume you live in USA, right?the region free player would be handy in case you want to buy a specific Region B release (i mean not all releases are the same in US and Europe or have the same transfers), or in case a European release is cheaper than the American one, or in case a movie has been released in Europe, but not in America..Also, if you watched your Blurays on your pc (i mean in a BLuray-rom), there are various softwares that remove the region from the disc when you play it.By the way, not ALL the Blurays in that site, but ALL the Twilight Time Blurays. (which is the ones that you see when you press the link)there are other Blurays from other labels too in that site that don't have iso scores.i would have to suggest The Blue Lagoon!A beautiful movie and a very beautiful score by Basil Poledouris!Oh, the Flint movies have iso score (you'll see them there), so there's another Goldsmith!here you can have a better view of the Twilight Time Blurays (because in SAE they are mixed with their DVDs)http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?studioid=762&sortby=recentlyadded
Jay 46,245 Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 There are very few blu rays with isolated scores out there, sadlyThe Omen has one, there's your Jerry

russds 8 Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 I know Edward Scissorhands has iso score, and sounds really good. filmmusic 3,272 Posted April 3, 2013 Posted April 3, 2013 Oh, i see LEGEND there. But an iso score only for the Tangerine Dream score!! I wish we had the Goldsmith score too!
Naïve Old Fart 13,026 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Thanks for the tips, guys. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it!) I live in good ole Bilghty, and so my Blu-ray player is region specific. I bought "Alien 3" and the score sounds great in 5.1. "Legend" is out in the U.K., and it would be a good buy, especially for an iso. TD score!I'm thinking of splashing out on the "POTA" box, for all the lovely Rosenman music (not to mention Tom Scott). Qiute simply, I get hard at the thought of "EFTPOTA" in 5.1!Does any-one living in the U.K. know of any more iso. scores?
filmmusic 3,272 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Legend is not only out in UK.It's in USA too, and has the theatrical cut with the iso TD score.by the way, the USA release according to Bluray.com is region free!(the UK release doesn't have the theatrical cut)edit:oh, now i got it. You live in England , right?
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Oh, i see LEGEND there. But an iso score only for the Tangerine Dream score!! I wish we had the Goldsmith score too!Really, you think they'd do that? Serious you think they'd do that?????
filmmusic 3,272 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 Oh, i see LEGEND there. But an iso score only for the Tangerine Dream score!! I wish we had the Goldsmith score too!Really, you think they'd do that? Serious you think they'd do that?????what do you mean?that they couldn't do it because they don't have the complete score, or that they wouldn't do it because they have no sense of aesthetics?
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 your request is illogical, and pure fanboy wish fulfillment.but hey while you're at it why not wish for Jackson's King Kong with an isolated Howard Shore score, or Troy with Yared's isolated score, or the Color Purple with John's isolated score.
filmmusic 3,272 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 I don't understand why my request/wish is illogical.haven't you made any requests/wishes at all in this forum?eg. "i wish we could have a release of that score" or something else?By the way, the Jerry Goldsmith score is not a rejected score! It's a replaced score for the US theatrical version ONLY!But it's there in both the European cut, and the Director's cut. That's what i was talking about. Having the iso score in these cuts.your other suggestions are illogical: having the iso score of music that has never been released with the film together.Goldsmith's score has nothing to do with the others you mentioned because it was used eventually, and at the time of release of the film.I'm guessing that either you didn't know that the Goldsmith score was used in the film, or you thought I was asking for the US theatrical cut with the Goldsmith score.I can't explain your post otherwise.
JoeinAR 1,957 Posted April 10, 2013 Posted April 10, 2013 if it was rejected in the US then that's all that matters, it's the one I saw. And no I didn't know his score was used in foreign cuts. It couldn't save the film regardless. I've not cared to revisit it at all.
