Empty Garden.

had the pleasure of hearing Elton sing it in concert.

Sorry, does nothing for me. Basically I do not like songs. And John Lennon is far from my favorite. I hate drugs.

Your song

great stuff Maynard, I believe it is the one song he's played at all his concerts.

how sad for you to hate songs. film music is wonderful stuff but it is only one flavor of music. There are many great songs that are as good as many soundtrack ques.

Only ones I'm familiar with are the ones from Lion King, so probably "Can You Feel the Love tonight."

You don't like songs?

So film music was the first music to ever grace your ears and you haven't explored outside of it since? Annnnd you hate drugs and therefore must hate John Lennon? Where is the link between drugs and listening to The Beatles?

Big fan.

Gotta go with "Circle of Life". It holds a special place in my heart, and it's also the song I sing the most in karaoke bars etc. That and "Can You Feel the Love Tonight".

But "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" is probably his artistic peak (the whole album is brilliant!). I've tried this a few times too, but it's very difficult to sing. Lots of odd chord changes and stuff.

God, there are so many to choose from.

Someone Saved My Life Tonight. what a great song.

I prefer his Lucy in the Sky with Diamond's over the Beatles version, and his version of Pinball Wizard just destroys the crappy Who version.

I'm not a big fan of the lion king songs. they're okay but not among his great songs.

Blasphemy. But then again, Pinball Wizard is not the best song on Tommy.

just listen to the Who version makes your ears bleed, but when Reg sings it, WOW.

Course the question that should be asked about the Who isn't Who but Why?

cannot stand them.

The Who happens to be one of my favorite rock bands of all time.

But I'm very glad you hate them. Keep on having great opinions!

If you like them fine, I don't, I don't particularly like the Rolling Stones either. But I do love the Beatles.

And Elton John.

I'm a Who completist, and The Beatles mono box set basically accomplished that nicely.

I can take or leave the Stones, though some of their songs are superb -- Miss You, Paint It Black, and a few others. "Angie" makes my ears bleed.

I'm a Who completist,

what does that mean in pure #'s. does that count legitimate albums, boots, etc.

my friend is a Beatles completist and his stash is staggering.

Ok, I'm not a pure completist. I'm a lazy one. I mostly buy legitimate albums, but even then, I don't own them all and try to buy used when I can. I usually avoid greatest hits compilations in all cases, choosing instead to buy the actual albums if I like the artist enough. I don't think I have any Who bootlegs, but may have gotten one or two from Wolfgangs. I typically stay away from post-Moon material, and I'm not a huge fan of the Who Are You album or most of the songs before Tommy. I think using the word "completist" around The Who was incorrect. I just tend to like their big three albums -- Tommy, Who's Next, Quadrophenia -- more than most artists' entire discography.

That means the only artist that I'm a completist for is Genesis.

I love Candle in the Wind - original and 1997.

A for the Beatles, I have been obsessed since I was a kid (I'm 32). My high school years were a treat for that obsession. I spent a ton of time tracking down Yellow Dog and all the other great bootlegs that flooded the underground market. So much fun.

I have literally hundreds of Beatles CDs. :)

Elton was always reliable when they wheeled him out for some British celebration concert thingy, but he's lost the attack and power in his voice just recently. He sounded bloomin' awful at the Queen's Jubilee concert recently - that's a first for him. Like croaky old McCartney, it's now time to stick to the recording studio.

The thing with Elton is, even his lesser known songs feel like classics.

The LAST SONG, was the first Elton Song I ever heard. The ONE, being the first Album of his I ever bought.

An unknown song, but still one I like is

Forty Licks is a superb compilation album. I like the Stones enough to buy their discography one day. The Who, probably not enough. I have their Ultimate Collection compilation, which is also fantastic. I never really felt the need to get their studio albums though.

Tommy and Quadrophenia are best appreciated in their entirety as concept albums or rock operas, whichever you believe them to be on that day. "Pinball Wizard" is not the strongest song on Tommy, as it was added to give the album a pop hit and radio play, and it kinda shows. But Who's Next IS a greatest hits album of The Who, with every song on it a classic rock staple. If you own one Who album, make it Who's Next.

I'd probably like Quadrophenia, considering "Love Reign O'er Me" is my favorite song of theirs. Did you get that super expensive edition that came out last year?

Posted

The one with 11 demos on disc 2? No, I don't own that edition. It looks interesting, though, I suppose it's time I buy a version that isn't scratched. If you mean the Blu-Ray that's like $80, then I'm not interested.

Love those!

The Madman Across the Water and Live in Australia albums are 2 favourites (I actually like the voice gravel for the latter, despite his ill health in actuality).

Levon, Original Sin, Greatest Discovery, Empty Garden, All Quiet on the Western Front, The One, Tiny Dancer, High Flying Bird, Blues for my Baby & Me, Your Song, I've Seen that Movie Too and Healing Hands would be my top errr 12.
