Topics I've Started

Best Classical Music Recordings

02 January 2009 - 04:46 AM

This topic has been brought up before, but it's worth bringing up again, and maybe this time it can be a bit more comprehensive.  It may be a bit of a daunting task, but there are so many uninteresting classical recordings of great music that it would be helpful for all of us to know of the greatest recordings of famous composers.

I'll pose the first question.  I love Tchaikovsky's music, but there are some terrible versions of his music out there.  Can anyone recommend CDs that are the definitive recordings, or perhaps a conductor or orchestra that performs exceptionally well at Tchaikovsky's pieces?

Harry Gregson-Williams

Why the hell does he hyphenate his last name?  Anyone know?

Is he from outside the Western world or something?  I've never heard of a man hyphenating his last name.

Secret Gem Of A Score?

01 November 2008 - 02:56 AM

So I'm watching this  movie called The Haunted Palace, starring Vincent Price and Lon Chaney, Jr.  It's a Roger Corman film and I've never heard of it or seen it before.  It's really good....like....really good.  But what surprises me even mroe than the good acting, good dialogue, tight pacing and script, and eerie atmosphere is the musical score.  This movie had to have been made on the cheap, but the score is majestic, brooding, and downright evil sounding.

Has anyone heard it?  According to a Google search, Ronald Stein composed it.

Danny Elfman's Upcoming Wolf Man Score

29 October 2008 - 06:01 PM

I'm not sure how may are aware that Danny Elfman is scoring the upcoming remake of The Wolfman (though this one is called The Wolf Man), but production is chugging right alon and I thought I'd post this to hear anyone's thoughts on the matter.

What sort of score do you want to hear from Elfman? What sort of score do you EXPECT he'll make?

Are you excited? Interested? Dismissive?

Personally, I'm not too excited about the score.  Elfman's quality has really dropped off, and I'm not sure his "wacky gothic" is really the way to go.  This movie looks extremely violent and atmospheric, more similar to the original 1941 classic (especially the hunt in the foggy woods) than to the more "bizarre" style adopted by Burton.  But I'm hoping he can deliver something really amazing.

Der Ring das Nibelungen Complete?

26 August 2008 - 03:39 AM

Finding classical music is always hard, because there are countless recordings and versions floating around.

In doing a search for Der Ring das Nibelungen, you're more likely to find analysis of the story instead of anything about the actual music.  If you can find the music, it's usually a five minute version of a section of the greater piece.  So what I'm asking is: Where can I find a complete recording (and a good performance) of the four pieces?
