filmmusic got a reaction from scissorhands in Best Music Score Oscar Nominations 2014!
The right thing is for the Oscar to go to the BEST score (whichever it is from the 5) at this moment, and not to serve as a consolation prize, or as a reward for a long-term career.
(I would support this view in all the categories)

From a time when action films had a script, characters and no CGI!
If you haven't seen it, I would highly recommend it!

filmmusic got a reaction from publicist in The Bear & the Hare (short animation from Disney veterans)
This is quite beautiful..
British department store John Lewis has released an ambitious annual Christmas advertisement, a £1 million hand-drawn spot with stop motion backgrounds called The Bear and the Hare. The piece was directed by Yves Geleyn and Elliot Dear through Hornet/Blinkink.
The hand-drawn character animation was created by two veterans of Disney’s former animation studio in Orlando: Dominic Carola who runs Premise Entertainment and Aaron Blaise who gained plenty of experience drawing bears when he co-directed Brother Bear. Aaron offered some details to Cartoon Brew about the project:
“I designed all of the characters while Dom and I supervised all of the animation. I personally animated all of the Bear and the Hare while Dom and his crew animated the rest of the animals. It was taken all the way through final line at Premise in Orlando. It was so great to do 2D again! I was even working on paper at my old Disney animation desk! Something I hadn’t done since Brother Bear!“

filmmusic got a reaction from Dixon Hill in Rachel Portman, anyone?
I'm just listening to Never Let Me Go (not for the first time).
I am generally not into the Rachel Portman sound but this score is definitely a masterpiece!
Should have been nominated for an Oscar. A perhaps overlooked gem (I don't know how many here have listened to it).
A Rachel Portman with a mature voice!

Saw yesterday Anastasia (1956) as a sequel to Nicholas and Alexandra I had seen the day before.
A well deserved Oscar for Ingrid bergman.
Does anyone miss the opening main titles with sweeping melodies in old films? I surely miss them!
I don't know but it's an element that makes a film timeless for me.. That grand introduction waiting for the movie to start...

LEGEND (1985) Director's cut
I think this would be great for a Halloween family viewing (goblins, fairies, elves, monsters, witches etc..)
Whatever is the negativity towards the script/story etc., one cannot deny that this is a gorgeous looking film with an excelletnt atmosphere and some goosebump moments!
The Jerry Goldsmith score is a masterpiece (his best for me - although not used in the film in its entirety).
I viewed aferwards some scenes with the Tangerine Dream score from the American theatrical version. Inappropriate, out of place, out of context, out of everything. I can't understand what they were thinking.
Half of the film's sublime magical atmosphere is due to the Goldsmith score.
I think I should buy the European Bluray too, because that is the version I first saw and loved.

Although I haven't listened to the complete theme (but adding the bits from the different tracks), I wouldn't say that it's among the most inspired Williams has ever written, listening to it with a clear mind..
(although I'm a bit fearful of saying anything negative here because I'll be stoned to death! )
Track 20 seems to me that it might be the most interesting track..

filmmusic got a reaction from MikeH in What does Jerry Goldsmith's music have what John Williams's music doesn't?
Hmmm. the first thing that comes in my mind is that Goldsmith frequently uses synths even for themes while Williams rarely does..

filmmusic got a reaction from airmanjerm in Hans Zimmer's Man Of Steel
Goldsmith's Planet of the Apes is serviceable underscore too!
But it's a quality sophisticated serviceable score...
Well, the very first thing I notice in a film is the music, the way a photographer will notice the photography, and an actor will notice the acting..
i get the idea from many people, in other forums too, that when we're talking about good old film music we're always referring to the BIG symphonic score with wealth of thematic material and that's it.
For me it's not a matter of size of orchestra, or memorable themes.
it's a matter of COMPOSITION!
A 3-instrument score, or an electronic score can be great too as long as it's a good composition by itself!
Meaning, the composer knows the language of harmony well, knows what to do with his material, how to handle it, knows sophisticated ways of construncting a simple melody etc. etc...
