  1. Has the delicious rising low string passage at 4:14 in the end credits track been discussed? Is it a motif? It also appears in those scoring session clips.
  2. Hmm, I dunno. The force theme's getting a bit old at this stage Wouldn't pick those out as the outstanding portions of this score.
  3. Not sure if that's a reference to Luke and Leia. It's quite different rhythmically and harmonically, and although the melody is similar, it has an extra note in the middle (the 3rd of the six pitches is not part of the 5 note opening melody of L&L)
  4. In fact, I didn't find myself missing the LSO at all while listening to the album. The LA musicians are fine players.
  5. Is it just me, or is anyone else reminded somewhat of the third movement from Mahler's 9th Symphony when they hear the March of the Resistance? I'm digging the March. I'm not sure if it's really a fugue, but I'll have to listen again. Rey's theme is beautiful, and has some colours I wasn't quite expecting. I listened to Scherzo for X-Wings as well, and enjoyed the use of Luke's theme. The main title recording sounds wonderfully fresh and energetic. Generally the mixing sounds quite good to my ears. I'm saving the rest until I get home, because I'm in the office, and want to experience this thing in a darkened room on a good stereo with no distractions!
  6. The Piano Concerto in G is likewise one of my favourite piano concerti.
  7. 2 tracks premiered at the end of this show - http://www.classicfm.com/radio/aod/?episodeId=9c54d031-957b-481e-afcd-7240b96040f3
  8. Hey guys, just wondering if there are any articles/websites/dissertations that provide a comprehensive analysis of the music of the original Star Wars trilogy? I'm not terribly familiar with the franchise - I've listened to the albums several times and know the more famous selections quite well, but haven't seen the films for many years. With the new film coming out, I'm planning to revisit the original trilogy and would like to take the opportunity to get to know the scores and musical motifs in further depth and detail. Any recommendations?
  9. How is it an "error"? That's what he wrote in the sketch. It's obviously been changed to the notes we hear in the final version of the score. That's pretty cool!
  10. Sometimes lots of time doesn't necessarily render a composer's best work. There's a lot of truth in the aphorism attributed to Leonard Bernstein "To achieve great things, you need a plan and not quite enough time". Two examples I can think of are Horner on Avatar and Williams on Tintin. Both were good scores but certainly not either composer's best work by a long shot, at least in my view.
  11. Tannhauser, Cool animation of that little short. Also liked the reaching for the flower melodic moment around 1:40 because it has a nice longing quality to it that matches the visual very well. I am curious why the harpsichord with organ at the very start? Were you given guidance from the film makers about the sense of mood? Nice tension rising midsection when puppet tries to break free. I also liked that you did not use a waltz 3/4 when the puppet started breaking free around 2:30…that would have been a serviceable obvious choice but you put it in 4 which made it still have a dance feel but slightly less predictable. Good mix of sound design and scoring elements. Did you do the sound design as well? Nicely done! Thank you Karelm for your feedback and compliments. I wasn't responsible for sound design, but I too think that the final mix achieved a nice balance between sonic elements. As for the opening, I wasn't given much guidance, it was quite reactionary on my part to my initial feelings on watching the film, and not over-intellectualised! The instruments at my disposal that day were piano, harpischord and organ, and I played all three myself for the recording. I wanted the opening shot to have a foreboding feel to underline the puppet's plight in captivity and feelings of hopelessness, and I liked the colour of the harpsichord and organ together.
  12. Hello folks, here's a little animated short which I scored a little while ago. It was composed performed and recorded within 2 days and a night, so it's a little rough round the edges. But I'd love to hear some thoughts from some of the great composers and keen enthusiasts on here. Thanks in advance
  13. I really enjoyed the Han and Leia statement, and the way it emerged from the ponderous harmonies in the strings preceeding. The brass was a bit overbearing in the Force theme, and the hackneyed drum hits didn't do a lot for me. But the final main theme over the logo was beautiful! The trailer in general sounds almost like a Giacchino arrangement to me, not that I'm very familiar with his work.
  14. Has anyone heard the "London Concert Orchestra"? Hoping to go to this with some friends, as I'll be in London at the time. But can't find out anything about them and a bit apprehensive about how well they'll do. http://www.barbican.org.uk/music/event-detail.asp?ID=18370
  15. Lang Lang is recording Kung Fu Panda 3 with Zimmer. That should be interesting! Source: https://www.facebook.com/LangLangPiano/photos/a.158507513351.144492.16325423351/10153959373918352/?type=3&theater
  16. I must say I somewhat prefer the concerti for Horn, Cello, and Bassoon to the Violin Concerto. Treesong, Flute and Clarinet don't do much for me. Harp, Viola, Trumpet, Tuba and Oboe would form the middle ground. They're all very enjoyable, but not quite on the same level as the first four.
