  1. -Edward Elgar -Copland -Musician -The Great Melody (by Conor Cruise O'Brien) -The Music of Berlioz -Mozart -Collins Dictionary Just to name a few books in his collection.
  2. He has yet to record it, probably after he comes back from his annual East Coast sojourn.
  3. Oh, I didn't see that one. The idea of this being posted in the General Discussion forum didn't cross my mind -it still doesn't. Thank you, Stefan!
  4. Just the same day that we have learned about John Williams' new project, Dreamworks has announced that they are no longer attached to the project, and that includes director Steven Spielberg. Source
  5. Check out the link, the info comes from a direct source - JoAnn Kane Music Services, John Williams' contractor and publisher.
  6. I just saw this on the Facebook page of JoAnn Kane Musice Service. Proofing John Williams' sketches for his latest movie project, "The Book Thief". There's little doubt that's his handwriting.
  7. wow... where is the music from? It was written 5 years ago by bassist of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Maurice Wininsky for the celebration of the orchestra's 50th anniversay. It's called "Festival Fifty", and it was a coincidence that I found the piece, because I was recording another work from that concert. I had to double check to make sure it was not a rearrangement of Olympic Spirit done by Williams himself. The video is indeed from my own Youtube channel, and the comments seem more interested in the Olympic mascot than the music itself
  8. My guess is that he'll premiere it in the BPO concerts next week (at least that's what I've assumed all these months). Normally, they don't publish the program of the concert on the website, so we'll have to wait for our fellow JWFan members' reviews.
  9. Great news! Gloria Cheng is a fantastic pianist (she's played the piano parts in John Williams and James Horner's recording sessions for a few years now), apart from a champion of contemporary music.
  10. Yeah, For 'the President's Own'. Now that we finally got every single fanfare they've premiered a new one (just a few days ago). Thanks for your successful research, Thor!
  11. Magnificent job, Miguel! I didn't think the result would be so compelling.
  12. I also had the exact same problem Miguel. I use Firefox. Anyway, i found the solution. i pressed the download file, it took me to the page where it has the player and plays the file (in my case a Quicktime player), and in that page i go to the firefox toolbar , File - save page as (i assume this is the translation in english because I have it in Greek), and it saves the 2.3 MB mp3. This is not a different intro! it's the intro of the piece, it's just that the one that is in the start, misses those first few bars (almost 8 bars) due to the video not starting from the start of the piece. maybe someone could grab that intro, and glue it to the piece we have from the start of the video? Oh, you're right! Then we're missing a good portion of the piece. I see it difficult to merge both performances into a single one, the tempo difference is just too wide.
  13. Great find!! Thank you!! There's another rendition of the theme with a faster tempo and different intro at the end of the convention (around 01:44:50). Unfortunately the voice-over blows our only chance of getting a clean recording of it.
  14. Here is an interview in French with maestro Williams, if some kind soul is willing to translate it into English...
  15. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has just announced its 2013/14 season. It will be two of John Williams' most acclaimed concerti, tuba and flute, the new additions to the on-going JW concert works cycle by the DSO and maestro Leonard Slatkin, to be recorded and later released on Naxos. Additionally, the Pops season opening concert will also feature an all-Williams film music program on October 18-20. Click here and here for more information.
  16. The Prelude is one of sheer beauty, and one can clearly tell it was written in the same year as War Horse. I had already listened to the piano reduction, but the full orchestral original version shows all the lush orchestral palette that was obviously missing in the original version. The sounding is so unique, I wish Williams wrote more often for the string orchestra. I'm very grateful to the BSO for releasing the live performance, and I only hope there are more recordings of the kind to follow.
  17. More information at cso.org Press release of the CSO 2013/14 season.
  18. Not that I know of. They've been playing the very same published version elsewhere. He did revise the concerto after the premiere, but that one was never published.
  19. Yeah, right! I like the dissection of Elegy, so far my favorite piece from the samples.
  20. Here is the first thorough review of the score in Spanish: http://www.mundobso.com/es/verbandasonora.php?id=14216&fb_source=message
  21. Just needed to stop by and quote this. I knew you liked it, but never realised you held it in such a high regard, Romao. So here's my updated list (not including concert works, that is): 1. Saving Private Ryan 2. Empire of the Sun 3. War of the Worlds 4. Sleepers 5. Amistad 6. Minority Report 7. Nixon 8. Always 9. War Horse 10. The Lost World
  22. Mahler often changed a lot of things after listening to the first performances, and so did Brahms with his symphonies, who only after having listened to them several times (and rewrite what he wasn't satisfied with) did he publish the scores.
  23. The way he speaks about the work makes me think it's quite a long piece (something different from the Lynn Farrel untitled solo cello piece).
