Here's where I look like an idiot. What's the difference?

Not an idiot.  TNG = The Next Generation (Picard and Data) which is 31 years old.  TOS = The Original Series (Kirk and Spock) which is 52 years old.

Hell, even Enterprise is 17 years old at this point.

So what is is that Star Wars fans want, really?

Many seemed to dislike TFA, up untill TLJ was released, which they hated because it was a betrayal of what TFA was trying to do (in their minds). Now Solo is a trainwreck that...apparently...will spell doom for the franchise.

Rogue One seems to be the least bashed film, and it's by far the least interesting.

    Hmmm.

Rogue One is my favorite so far.  (I'll see Solo this weekend.)

While I don't buy that TFA was just a remake of Star Wars I will admit that TLJ was a lot more interesting to me.  And I had far more objection to Han in TFA than Luke in TLJ.

Because of Abrams' set up the shape of the SW Universe really doesn't make sense.  What kind of government do they have?  Is the Republic really gone?  Is the First Order really in charge now?  Did the Republic not have any military that wasn't on The Republic (nice job with names, JJ)?  I'll be interested to see how (if?) he wraps it all up.

Thanks @Tallguy!  I thought it was so interesting how Horner presented the theme after the rescue.  There's lots of chaos happening on screen with the reporters rushing to get the story to their editors and the crowd running around, but Horner keeps all the musical focus on Cliff's elation with the freedom of flying.

I noticed that too.  As many times as I've seen this film I've listened to it more.  And sometimes I do my own editing in my head.  It was interesting to see how after Cliff drops off Malcolm the action stays with absolutely everybody EXCEPT him.  But it works and the music keeps him in mind.  Movie making is funny stuff.

I think it's safe to say that someone (Johnston or Horner) was listening to The Right Stuff.  When this came out I had to learn how to hum this without going into Conti.

The music at 2:40 is actually better music to take off to than the actual takeoff music.  :)  I've never seen a Gee Bee Z but I've seen an R1.  Crazy little plains.  They're all engine with just enough wing to fly.  Good practice for rocket packs.

Are there any modern movies that do the 1930's better than this one?  If The Shadow had been more like this it would have been one of my favorite movies ever.

  4. I have to admit, this is my favorite kind of scoring.  All of the music MEANS something.  It changes with characters, with edits.  It tells a story, not just underscores an emotion or mood.  It teases out themes and motifs before a big center stage presentation.  Like the little hint of Cliff's theme as he runs for the hangar.  The part with the child-like music box as Peevey explains he controls to Cliff is one of my favorite parts of the score.

Horner scores this in two parts, kind of.  The first part is driven by action and events, weaving in music specific to what's on screen.  Then after Cliff rescues Malcolm it turns into an almost concert presentation of The Theme.

I like the inclusion of the unscored portion because it shows how the movie lets drama and story build without music before really laying on the gas.  (I've come to really appreciate unscored scenes to allow an audience to hear an environment.  A fairground, a spaceship, a waterfall, etc.)

I forget how much I love this score and this movie.  I took a road trip that summer and we listened to this CD on a loop.  (This was also the summer I got my pilot's license.)

Hey, at 4:01, is that a Graflex flash mount?

    Great job, Stu!

  5. Just like I never thought Batman and Robin was some terrible descent from Batman Forever (both were terrible) I didn't find Revenge of the Sith any better than Attack of the Clones.  I suppose ROTS didn't have the C-3PO joke-fest, but that's about all.  It did not have the heartbreaking end of Anakin Skywalker.  It certainly gave us nothing of Darth Vader helping the Empire "hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights".  I liked The Phantom Menace back in the day, but it hasn't aged very well.

I loved Rogue One SO much.  (And the score.)

I liked The Last Jedi more than The Force Awakens.  But I liked them both.  TLJ has the same problems with Not Rey that Return of the Jedi has with Not Luke.  I don't think the writer / director cares about any of the other stories but they have to give these beloved characters SOMETHING to do.  The Empire Strikes Back almost had the same problem, but they managed to give Han and Co. an interesting chase and Bespin was a more interesting locale than Canto Bight.

Haven't seen Solo yet.  Maybe tomorrow.

  6. I like TLJ a little bit less than when I saw it, but I have always loved "Carrie Poppins".

Just spent two days in Disneyland.  Tomorrowland plays Star Wars music NON-STOP.  And not just "the hits".  I gotta tell you how wonderful it is to be walking by and hearing someone (not me) humming along to something more obscure like Luke and Leia or The Little People Work!

I can only imagine what Galaxy's Edge is going to be like.

Hmmm, I called it that, because it seemed to be the same as the fanfare that opens The Throne Room, it could be the Main Title.

Are you referring to the opening brass after the big crash?

Well, the Jedi ending is actually from the 1978 concert arrangement, so of course they used it, Unfortunate as it is.

Throne Room Fanfare is certainly more descriptive, I think.

I think I'm including the "crash" as the first note.  If you listen to take 20 of the main title it's a little more noticeable.  I wish I had a better musical vocabulary for this.

  8. I hope I haven't mentioned this before.  I was thrilled when Giacchino used the original Star Wars ending for the end of Rogue One rather than the concert version / Return of the Jedi version.

At some point I realized that both endings are the Throne Room (as Fal noted).  One is just more upbeat and (I think) more explicit a reference (the Jedi one).  I'm on JWfan.  You all know this.

Then last summer I realized that what Fal calls the Throne Room Fanfare (development) is actually the first eight notes of the Main Title!  So it bookends Star Wars!

Does anyone else agree with me on this?

(I saw a concert a couple of years ago where they played both the concert versions of the Main Title and The Throne Room.  Both of them used the Jedi ending.  I was bummed.  I would have hoped with the same finale to both pieces they could have used Star Wars for one and Jedi for the other.  Le sigh.)

Eh, live-action isn't really a helpful categorization whereas animation can be. I guess it's a genre of style or medium, like "silent movie"

Yeah, this is why mom's come back to the video counter very very upset because the parents let their kid rent some Japanese adult anime that they thought would be perfectly appropriate because "it was a cartoon".

  10. Now I want to know what parts of Rogue One that JW nixed.  I'm a fan of that score and I thought MG used JW's themes very well and did a nice job incorporating his own (although I didn't think the Empire needed another march - even a really good one).

BTW - on topic - I'm still listening to these mixes on Spotify and I'm still liking them a lot.  Maybe I should listen to the 2017 ones more.  I did notice that the 2017 The Princess Appears has that good old "whine" at around 0:15 that I grew up with.
