"The Falling Car" is allowed to finish almost completely - there's actually a bit more of the ending (just the tail of the ringing out of the final note) available on the OST or Anniversary Edition.  Interesting about that final chord: On the OST, there's a WICKED lout stage noise at one point.  On the 20th Anniversary Edition, Sullivan seemed to switch to a different take for just the final chord to avoid that noise; The take chosen has a bit of a different feel to it.  On the LLL, Matessino seems to have gone back to the original take, but managed to quiet the sound of the stage noise.

    Anyway.

There is no silence between the 2 cues, as the T-Rex Chase music comes in before its done fully ringing out as I said.  So you could edit in the full final chord from the OST or 20th, add your own silence, and then start T-Rex Chase in its own track, which would actually match Williams' intentions.  The cues overlap in the film, but only because his cue was artificially edited/extended to loop the beginning part earlier than where JW spotted the cue to actually start.

I haven't read them yet, but it does seem he does go into great detail, yes.  At first glance they seem to be more about the production of the film than the score, though.

Thanks Jason. That clears it up. The  3 note motif is retained in the track but was edited out in the film. I keep forgetting that the opening of the Chase Cue cue was edited. Anyways looking foward to it.

  2. Jason, great thread! More focussed discussion here. Of course I envy everyone who gets the set before I get mine. Glad to know the flow of the albums is great. While I did listen to the new unreleased music from JP on the Anniversary digital release and also noticed how well that album was mastered but I didn't play the whole album as a single listen at that time because I felt that the flow didn't work so well, With this set I'm sure its going to be great listen all the way through and recall the flow of the film.

How does the cue  'The Falling Car and The T-Rex Chase ' flow now that they match the film sequence. Was the silence edited for the start of the T-rex Chase before the brass drops a tone to indicate the start of the chase after afterIam says  Ím fairly alarmed'?

Also how are the liner notes and I hope Mattessino goes into great detail.

Now I'am avoiding going back to watch either of the movies so I can experience both the score afresh when they arrive!

  3. I found the score to be much darker than I had imagined after reading the original book (I was in College back then). The score had great surprises ins tore and Williams nod to Max Steiner's own KING KONG was quite interesting. He went for a more edgier, brooding material. the Main Theme is majestic but much shades darker. 'The Stegosaurus' is also a great favourite of mine it has an almost spiritual serenity in the middle but then the ostinato driven brass flutters break up the harmony and create chaos. Its one one most hypnotic cues on the album. The bright and cheerful 'The Hunt' is a delightful little scherzo like piece that was one of the great highlights. The overall action cues are not as great as on the original film but the diversity of the orchestration, the mood and ambience was extremely enjoyable over the years. I whole heatedly welcome the new release!

  4. Folks, Need an Urgent advice!

Although I have already placed an order via SAE to be shipped to me via registered package to me here in Pakistan where I reside and it will take me 3 weeks to reach me here in Karachi.

Now I just found out that my aunt from (New York city) is visiting us and arriving on 8th December.

If I place my order from LLL for Jurassic Park & other sets today. What are my chances that this will be delivered within a few days by 6th Dec. i.e. if LLL ships my order by max 2nd Dec.

What should I do? Time is short!

  5. Although ET is the more poular choice in terms of definite re issue, it has been expanded twice on cd. Mike Mattessino even prepped an ideal 2cd program once ( I think it was posted here before)I dont think anyone would just rush to redo this at least fir a while.

But I would rush to remind that CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND is headed for its 40th Anniversary next year and that would easily qualify for a formally expanded and remastered release with the original OST as a part of the 2cd configuration.

I believe there are many alternates and film versions still unreleased and even the extra score from The Special Edition could be made a part of it. Not to mention the various demos of the 5 note theme.

This would be an ideal choice for MM to produce with LLL's involvement. I really hope this happens next.

Another title that would be exciting would be WAR OF THE WORLDS. Personaly Id love that one.

Ofcourse the INDY scores are also a great priority for us fans to get the definitive reissues and I like what Jason has proposed in the above posts. A new 8cd box set from the four films would be highly welcomed any time.

YES!  No stupid fade-in to start The Hunt!  Awesome!

So this time out of 10 samples, only 4 are completely OST material, 5 are completely new material, and 1 is a mix of both

Yes !..my favourite cue sounds even more furious and the beginning has a rough timber to it which I just love.. I was wondering if the had used an inferior 3 generation down from the original master track on the OST album?  To me it always sounded somewhat inferior to the other tracks. I hope MM will explain about its origins in great detail on the quality of source tracks used. Now imagine, if 'The Hun't hadn't been used on the OST album- it would have become dynamite discovery on this new set. Still the upgrade in sound quality here makes up for as much excitement.

it will take some time for me to get this( in Pakistan) as I ordered the set from SAE. I had the option of having it mailed inland to NY as my aunt is visiting me but shes leaving on 5th Dec so i couldn't afford to have it missed  (since the LLL had planned to do shipping on Dec 2 but now I hear its shipping early)

Anyways, lucky folks who get this first...pls share your pics and early feedback!

Just to echo @azahid, I'd also love to read an interview with Matessino about the set, if you ever had the time or opportunity @Jay! I re-read your interview about A.I. just last night and the insight is brilliant.

It's always fascinating to hear how these expansions eventuate, whether LLL approached the Williams/Spielberg camp or if they approached MM after the runaway success of Jurassic World. Whether JW made any requests regarding track order or resisted presenting these scores chronologically, given his diverse OST tracks (I'm thinking CD3 starting with The Lost World was a Williams request). I wonder if there was any unknown music found in the session tapes that surprised MM (The Saboteur?), and how on earth they got Universal's approval to handle such iconic music on an independent label (especially so soon after they expanded the first score themselves).

Even the really technical stuff is interesting in these old analogue scores, like how they found the session tapes or what condition they were in (this will be fascinating in the eventual Star Wars remasters, given the tapes are 40 years old and "lost" in the salt mines).

From memory Williams had a few different orchestrators on Jurassic Park, and Artie Kane conducted a few cues due to his back issues. Hopefully the liner notes cover those fun little factoids. :)

I feel the same way here. Insights on making this future well loved box set deserves it. I agree the past relationship that LLL has forged with John Williams/Spielberg and of course Mike Mattessino has certainly paved the way for Universal. An extra support from Williams and Spielberg must have driven through the barriers of Universal to secure such a terrific franchise material.

I'am also fairly certain that LLL will eventually continue into this relationship to unearth more projects (Williams and non Williams)..starting with JURASSIC PARK III and JURASSIC WORLD as a part of securing this deal)

Just a theory, but re-watching this scene there's about 20 seconds of "orchestral punctuations" for each impact tremor that were cut down or microedited from The Coming Storm combo track. Maybe this has been restored to its original film presentation (I'm assuming they recorded this as it appears in the film) with the long pauses between each impact tremor?

And yeah, wouldn't surprise me if there's another 5 seconds at the start of The Falling Car and the end of T-Rex Chase as well, which are both cross-faded into other cues on the existing previous releases. I haven't seen the sheet music though so you definitely have a better idea than I do! My money is on T-Rex Chase having a longer ending, because the OST already contains about 10 seconds of music from The Falling Car that was dialled out in the film.

Right on , Crumbs. I think Williams & Shawn Murphy probably stitched the two cues on the 20th Anniversary as an easy listening experience. But I really wanted to hear 'T-Rex Chase' cue track as it appeared in the film. So I'am hoping too that MIke Mattessiono did absolutely the right thing to fix the cue in this chronological sequence and with the correct tremor punctuations, pauses, silence and the more prominent sounding brass note when Ian says '' Iam fairly Alarmed here"

    Ooh I cant wait..!

  9. I also think that 2017 will marks its release. It should be big year for Williams releases. Also besides STAR WARS we should be getting JFK & TOWERING INFERNO from LLL (Fingers crossed knowing the last minute approval delays) and also  may I remind you its 40th Anniversary for both STAR WARS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. Some label may even surprise us with a new definitive CLOSE ENCOUNTERS set and not to mention if Disney or Intrada can get to redo the originaly trilogy scores as the timing is so apt. So who knows?
