Conductors: (in no particular order except for the 1st)

Gustavo Dudamel

Herbert von Karajan

Furtwangler

Zubin Mehta

Jamie Laredo

Pierre Monteux

Michael Tilson-Thomas

Lorin Maazel (occasionally he can be a little dead-pan, but most of the time I like him)

John Williams (actually learned a lot of my own technique from him because he has such a clear pattern)

Pianist:

I like a lot but for some reason I can only think of two:

Ashkenazy

Malcolm Frager

Karajan, Wand and Celibidache for Bruckner... Thielemann and Rattle among the living conductors, and at times Harnoncourt.

Karajan and Kempe for Wagner and Strauss. Barenboim seems to be very good, too.

Bernstein and Rattle for Mahler.

Gardiner and Jacobs have done great Mozart.

Generally, Karajan, Rattle and a few others always get my attention. Welser-Möst is conducting a phenomenal Ring cycle at the Staatsoper at the moment.

Conductor: James Levine (Chicago Symphony Recordings)

Pianist: Krystian Zimmerman

It has taken me nearly 500 CDs to figure this out.

Favorite living conductors: Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado, Bernard Haitink

Favorite living pianists: Martha Argerich, Evgeny Kissin, Murray Perahia... but I have to mention Marc-Andre Hamelin for his superhuman technique and repertoire.

Conductors: (in order)

Erich Kunzel

John Williams

Leonard Bernstein

Charles Dutoit

Leanard Slatkin

and more that I can't think of right now!

Pianists:

I don't really have a favorite one because I don't listen to much piano music. (Although I sort of play piano. At least I took lessons for 5 years. Practicing every day was my weak point!)

I thought perhaps you meant "conductor AND pianist" as several conductors are also great concert pianists as well....my favorite in that category would be Leonard Bernstein. Others still living: Christoph Eschenbach, Daniel Barenboim. And JW of course!

Let's see, living conductors, these five are my favorites:

Simon Rattle

Esa-Pekka Salonen

Claudio Abbado

Riccardo Chailly

Charles Mackerras

Non-living, too many to name, but Herbert von Karajan, Eugene Ormandy, Fritz Reiner come to mind.

Pianists:

Jean-Yves Thibaudet

Yefim Bronfman

Martha Argerich

...just to name a few

Pianist: Yefim Bronfman. Barenboim is good in concert, but I don't find his recordings to be particularly exciting.

I would think Ashkenazy is among the greatest. I like him better as a pianist than a conductor though.

Christopher O'Riley is an amazing pianist - his interpretations of Radiohead are consistently brilliant and highly creative.

Yes, I forgot Ashkenazy...extraordinary pianist....as conductor, less, though I do really like his Sibelius cycle with the Philharmonia.

And I can't believe I forgot Andre Previn!! Amazing pianist...but underrated as a conductor, also a very fine composer.

BTW speaking of dual activities, Itzhak Perlman has gotten more into conducting recently, has anyone seen him in that capacity?

I much prefer the Berglund cycle. In fact, I had the Ashkenazy first and had already nearly given up on Sibelius as a composer of symphonies until I got the Berglund set.

Yeah I prefer Berglund, Maazel/Vienna, and Blomstedt...and then Ashkenazy...it's probably more the Philharmonia's playing that impresses me more than his conducting though...
