It's a nice idea, but looking over the thread, there's only been two entries the past five days and one in the last four. Unfortunately I don't think time is the problem. If anything, a shorter deadline should be incentive. Plus, as I said, I want to get the whole thing in before I go on vacation at the end of January.

In chronological order:

- Luke's Theme from Star Wars: the definitive "epic" theme.

- Force Theme: perfect in its development, endless in its variations.

- Superman Fanfare/Theme: incredible (super)feat to musically capture a then 40-yr old icon.

- Smallville Theme: lush Americana theme w/ a wist of nostalgia.

- Imperial March: ominous and foreboding w/o going over-the-top.

- Raiders March: as the FSM podcast guys said, remarkable in its length of line and deceptively complex.

- Jim's New Life from Empire of the Sun: amazed at how beautiful an uptempo theme could be.

- Theme from Born on the Fourth of July: strings tug at the heart. felt it was maybe inspired by Barber's Adagio (Platoon).

- Home Alone Theme (Somewhere in my Memory): heartwarming and childlike w/o any shallow cheesiness.

- Love Theme from The Terminal: reminds me of the Force theme in its structure. so simple yet so strong in composition and memorable in melody.

I'll tell you, I delayed my list to these last couple days because I had a hard time narrowing it down. To effectively tell myself these are 10 definitive themes I think the Maestro wrote is both a bewildering task and fearful prospect. But it was fun.

Is it time for me to play Figo's old "too self-consciously iconoclastic" card? :P

Whatever Figo says, time has proven that the BSO was in better hands with Ozawa than now with Levine.

And replying to you, no, it's not self-conscious, it's what I really feel (although not accurate as I'm changing my preferences all the time) and have been basically listening to this whole year. Those friends here who know me do know that I've been really mad about some of those themes.

In chronological order:

The Mountain theme from Close Encounters of the Third Kind

End Title theme from Jaws 2

Theme from Superman

Call of the Dark Side motif from Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

The Ark's theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark

Minor theme from Empire of the Sun (as heard at the beginning of Toy Planes, Home and Hearth)

Theme from The Accidental Tourist

Nazi motif from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Voldemort's theme from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Hm, that still turned out to be quite difficult getting down to 10.

Smallville? ;) The TV-series? Never saw it, but does JW have to do with it?

Obviously, he means the Smallville theme from Superman: The Movie.

Call of the Dark Side motif from Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

???

The Training of a Jedi Knight/The Magic Tree

3:57 - 4:05

The Clash of Lightsabers

0:08 - 0:40

Or something along those lines.

Come to think of it, it actually sounds a bit like part of Vader's theme...

As we already discussed on page 2 of this thread, "Harry's Wondrous World" is a concert arrangement containing at least 5 different themes from Harry Potter 1. You gotta pick which specific theme in there you want

Just in time steb, and you helped break the big logjam, thanks. We'll still need a poll to settle a tie, though.

OK, here we go. I'll post the full results with numbers after the tournament's over, but we have our bracket. First, the top four seeds that will be getting a bye into the 2nd round:

#4- Hedwig's Theme

#3- The Imperial March

#2- The Force Theme

And #1, in a bit of an upset (due to the recent release of a certain high profile set, I'm thinking)- The Raiders March

I'll have the rest up in a bit.

Here's the rest of the ones that made it to the bracket:

#5- Superman March

#6- Star Wars main theme/Luke's theme

#7- Theme from Jurassic Park

#8- ET Flying theme

#9- A Window to the Past

#10- Han Solo and the Princess

#11- The Ark theme

#12- TIE Slave Children's theme/Love Theme from Superman

There were some ties within that group, I broke them by who reached the highest vote total first.

The other two themes that were in the 4 way tie for 12th until the final ballot were the Jurassic Park Island Fanfare and Schindler's List. Other themes that just missed the cut: Anakin's Theme, Across the Stars, and Leia's Theme.

How the heck did no themes from HOOK make it to the top 12? That's insane

If this same poll was run again shortly after a 2CD complete Hook set finally came out, guaranteed some of them would be on there.

Also: Theme from Jurassic Park made it, but not the Island Fanfare? Come on!

No Hook???

I don't like it either. Then again there is such a wealth of great themes in Hook that it would be difficult to narrow them down to fit in among a ten best list.

I agree with red's theory, that the sheer number of themes caused Hook votes to be split. It's more of a problem with Hook than any of Williams' multi-score sagas because it's all crammed into one score.

I'm waiting until the tournament is fully over to make public all the results, but I will say that three different Hook themes recieved multiple votes, with the Neverland theme coming the closest.

Here's another shocker I'll put out there now: the main Jaws theme got one vote. One. The Orca theme got two.

Well, it's not really that representative since participation was lower than I would have imagined, this was also the year of Indy, so indy-mania probably changed a few votes.

Yes, I was disappointed with the amount of ballots entered. But I can't force people to participate (and I sure did nag a lot), I just had to go with what I got.

And I agree about Indy, several people have brought that up and it's a valid point. I think it's the reason the Raiders March got the top seed. How about this: I'll do another one in a year's time. Mark it down.

Typical, I could have predicted these results in my sleep.

No offense to the poll though.
