And I also had the same suspect as you about n. 3, but I am not completely sure... it may also be from: (follows in white color) The Empire Strikes Backand for several reasons I think this option is more likely, although I cannot verify it in this moment. It just became more common for action blockbusters, thanks to composers like Danny Elfman, Alan Silvestri, Christopher Young, Trevor Rabin, Mark Mancina, Elliot Goldenthal and others. I take back my statement that Williams only used 6, but that's still a one-off. He wanted a bizarre/grotesque Herrmannesque effect for the reveal of the space slug (Herrmann loved using 8 horns - especially in his Harryhausen scores) - so he wrote four part minor triads in 16th notes - rolling around chromatically in parallel motion - with the 8 horns double-tonguing. As someone who's studied a number of fully orchestrated cues from the score, I can tell you the standard number of horns is 6 or 4. Even the largest musical tableaux in the score - The Battle of Hoth - which calls for 5 oboes and 2 pianos - only has 6. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
