MV says:

This evening Lukas, Neil, Jeff, Matt and I did a wonderful in depth interview with Daniel Schweiger for his online show On the Score. The 3 producers went into some great detail about the project, the elements, and their love for the series. Matt added some heart felt, insightful info from La-La Land's point of view and I cracked wise... failing 95% of the time.

I believe the interview goes up next Monday. We'll keep you posted.

MV

and Jeff Bond says:

There’s 17 hours of music. Out of the 15 CDs, 12 consist of original scores written for the show by seven different composers, and three have “library cues” which range from adaptations of music previously recorded for the show–sometimes done with different tempi, different arrangements and other changes, and some is totally original music, but written “wild”–i.e., not scored to a specific scene. So while there IS some repeated music, it’s a small percentage of the entire set, and it is different enough in performance and sound to differentiate it from the rest of the music on the set. There are also sound effects which were created musically, songs, and “source” music–Trelane playing the harpsichord, for example. It’s a huge variety of music and to my knowledge no television series has ever had all of its recorded music archived like this.

Was it typical of the time to record custom episode trailer music? I presumed it was tracked together from the rest of the episode?

No, it wasn't - these were the only two trailer scores created, almost certainly because it was the beginning of the series and they didn't have sufficient library music yet to track them.

The episode scores are being presented in the best order that makes sense for chronology, composer (keeping a composer's work together on a disc), space limitations and, to a certain extent, style and tone. You'll see what I mean, and I think 85-90% of the layout would have been the same, no matter who did it. But if you don't like it, you can blame me!

I've been listening to the sample cues, and have a special love for the "Space Battle" music from Elaan of Troyus. It always caught my ear in the episode, and is half the production value right there.

Every one of those samples brings out a ton on memories from the show, and take me back to my childhood.

I am a big fan of Star Trek because it's fun, the characters are enjoyable, and every now and then, it gives you an entertaining morality play.

And there was a surprising depth to the characters, especially Spock, as early as "The Naked Time", with his mental breakdown in the conference room.

This is all about the great music, but also something more. It's about my childhood, and my love of Star Trek and Science Fiction.

Reading the episode titles, and reading the cue titles, I remember parts of the great music I heard in those great moments.

Something that is both personal and universal.

I can already see that I'm going to have to decide whether to keep the tracks as presented on each disc, or re-order them to "rebuild" each episode. For example, in S1D5 above, track 46 clearly belongs to The City on the Edge of Forever, which was featured in tracks 1-9, but the last thing I want to do is duplicate a lot of repeated tracked library music all over the place, and extend the 17 hour runtime even more.

Screw it. In Neil I trust.

I cannot imagine why anyone would want to listen to this. All the music from most episodes is the same over and over.

Well that's the point, every episode wasn't scored, they only scored a handful of episodes then tracked that music into the rest. So this will be JUST the unique music grouped by the episodes it was written for, without all the duplicate tracked stuff at all

Joey,

You proceed from a false assumption.

The cues on these discs are unique and of themselves, though they often share some thematic material (themes, motivs).

You are not looking at the cues for the tracked episodes, but unique cues for the episodes first written, and the unique library cues where appropriate.

The same piece may be used everywhere on the show, but only one instance of each cue is on the set.

What a great idea! Repeat all the tracked material so I have 79 complete scores to listen through!

I watched Star Trek from the beginning. The music is often tracked. Yes there are very different scores and cues I get that, those are often some of my favorite Star Trek moments, but even then 15 cd's of tv music. hell Lost In Space is too much over 2cd's and it's JW's music.

And yes I think the Lost In Space theme, 1 and 2, are superior to Star Trek. That first Season 3 episode with the second theme was a WOW MOMENT.

Actually, I have considered reconstructing an episode score or two from this set for a fun exercise.

I might do this with something like "The Corbomite Maneuver", adding in main and end titles as well.

I might do it with playlists if I get really bored, but I don't have a single playlist on my iPod yet so I clearly haven't been bored enough.

The thing is, Star Trek is actually incredibly diverse musically, even with this set de-duped. I cannot speak for Lost in Space music (I vaguely remember it), but the music in Star Trek is incredibly diverse, IMHO.

I'm looking through the list of episode scores and remembering the pieces of music that stood out for each of them. Very distinct, and very different for each episode, though obviously cut from similar cloth.

To be frank, I think you may be seeing the amount of tracking in the series, and forgetting the variety of musical material being tracked from.

Nice interview Indysolo, glad you realized quite a dream, now do you have a cameo in the next Star Trek film, maybe you get killed in the destruction of Star Fleet, you did have a red uniform on last time if I remember correctly?

Joe, unsure if Neil still shows up time to time.

Neil hasn't posted here since 2010

He had the opportunity to be in Star Trek 11 but chose to stay home and work on film scores instead

I cannot imagine why anyone would want to listen to this.

I tend to agree.

Although I love the atmosphere that the music creates when actually watching the show (and especially the etherial sound effects used for planet surfaces and that kind of thing), I look these days at how practical it would be for me owning a set this vast, full of short segments of material. It would be the sort of thing that in my case would end up on a shelf and perhaps one CD from it played every few months (being highly optimistic) at the most. I see it as very much an item for the 'extreme' fan. I commend the labour of love by IndySolo though.

It is a great way to preserve the material.

La-La Land Records and CBS Consumer Products, in association with GNP Crescendo Records, proudly announce the release of STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION, a limited edition 15-CD box set, showcasing all episode scores as heard in all three original seasons of the landmark sci-fi television series STAR TREK (1966-1969). This special collection of ground-breaking, iconic music, from one of television’s most acclaimed and beloved series, has been newly remastered from studio elements and features hours of stellar material previously unreleased in any format.

Original series composers Alexander Courage, George Duning, Jerry Fielding, Gerald Fried, Sol Kaplan, Samuel Matlovsky, Joseph Mullendore and Fred Steiner are all represented in this deluxe collection, their historic work meticulously assembled, restored and remastered to ensure the finest presentation and sound quality possible. Four CD booklets, totaling over 100 pages and featuring exclusive, in-depth liner notes from film music writer and Star Trek historian Jeff Bond, complement this attractive set designed by Joe Sikoryak, which is housed in a hardcover slipcase. Produced by Lukas Kendall, Neil S. Bulk and Jeff Bond, restored by Chris Malone and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this comprehensive set illustrates how the original Trek series scores not only team with action, adventure and drama, but how they are also infused with deep emotion and the greatness of the human spirit. Such characteristics have kept these richly orchestrated tracks vital and relevant decades beyond their original recording. This set is limited to 6000 units.

For the complete 15-CD track listing visit www.lalalandrecords.com when the set becomes available on Dec 4th.
