The 87th Academy Awards

Koray Savas

2008 ceremony was the best in years. The following years could never live up to that one (with many of them being very flat).

NPH hosting offers promise though.

I've always watched them, and I've mentioned that here many times.

Another Oscar night. Will the downward trend continue? Will Neil Patrick Harris turn things around? Did anyone actually see a nominated movie this year?

It's going to be Birdman, Birdman, Birdman.

Saw all of them. The Best Pic nominees at least. And no, I don't think Birdman will be doing a clean sweep.

That was for prior discussion. This is for real-time discussion.

That's what the chat room is for!

Do we still use that?

I've updated Java, fiddled with the security exemptions, tried it Firefox and Safari, and I still can't get into the darned thing.

He's been saying stuff like that for his whole promotional campaign for this film. Refreshing indeed.

Did you get to see the actors roundtable Koray?

Same. It's not working at all.

So it begins.

Well deserved win for JK Simmons.

Nice opening number. And there's something cool about Harris giving some real sincerity to the idea of honoring moving pictures (once or twice, anyway). The musical performance wasn't over-the-top, which I liked.

The insurance man wins. No surprise there. I think he's aiming for a free burger from McDonalds with that speech, though. . . .

It is kinda underwhelming, isn't it? Harris is smiling at too many of his own jokes (which aren't really funny enough for him to be smiling at).

The winner for Costume Design also wins the award for the slowest person to the stage ever.

Hah! Harris just had his own Adele Dezeem moment!

Opening number was nice, but I thought the spectacle would have topped his Emmy number. It was sincere though.

But yes, Harris has been a bit underwhelming so far.

Let's hope NPH has something better up his sleeve to pick up the pace. It feels kind of flat at the moment.

The Everything is Awesome performance was cute I guess.

James Franco is happy that Neil Patrick Harris is hosting the Oscars. He sucks more than I did.

They just did a bit of a jw love theme. The best love theme

Han solo and the Princess is JW's best love theme, no contest

Bring back Seth Mc Farlane

Heck, I'd even take James Franco right now!

This is not even CLOSE to how bad Franco was.

I remember McFarlane kind of being like this too. Strange how such established comedians lose their shine on the Oscar stage.

Unless NPH has something better in store for us.

Well that Birdman parody was fun.

See . . . when you can think of the jokes they should be using, the wide-open opportunities they're missing, you know things aren't going well. (This never happened with Billy Crystal.)

Billy Crystal sucked 2 years ago (or was it 3)

You're right. That one was so bad I forgot about it! (I was thinking of his classic series of hosting jobs.)

I can;t remember when the Oscars had a really great show recently

That's because there hasn't been one.

The Oscars need to dump all but the essentials. Best Picture best acting awards directing writing cinematography and that's about it.

Make up and special effects need to be special award for when they advance the medium.

81st Academy Awards. Hugh Jackman aced it.

That was the last great show for the Oscars.

In fact Ellen last year too

Yeah, but she was pleasant enough. I never expected anything too much from her anyway.

Ms. Arquette stfu. You will make more money in one episode of CSI Cyber than the average American woman will make in a year..

Right on! Big Hero 6 wins. Everyone thought it would be Dragon 2. Nice surprise.

Surprise indeed.

HTTYD 2 was the only one I saw.

LEGO Movie is the only animated 2014 film I saw

So weird to have a year without a Pixar movie

And now next year, they'll have 2.... will Disney through their weight behind one and snub the other, or push for both?
