The Illustrious Jerry 3,356
Aaaaaa! I have the simple releases of TLOTR first two movies. Obviously for the JW ones on the list I'd go expanded. Thank you for the insight.
Kasey Kockroach 2,345
Only buy the Jurassic Park OST if you want to hear the theme over and over and over and over...
Jurassic Shark 12,137
Well, the expanded JP doesn't add much.
Kasey Kockroach 2,345
I'm more referring to how the OST was arranged to play the end credits twice, or something like that.
Jurassic Shark 12,137
That's okay. It's such a great theme and arrangement that I don't mind.
Kasey Kockroach 2,345
Me neither in the long run, but I appreciate the theme more when it appears less, if that makes any sense.
Jurassic Shark 12,137
I can understand that.
Kasey Kockroach 2,345
For me though, The Lost World's OST is pretty much perfect, save The Stegosaurus oddly being placed near the end. I'm of course quite jolly to have the complete score now, but I still would proclaim that The Lost World has the best OST in the series.
Jurassic Shark 12,137
To me, both installments which came after TLW were huge disappointments. I was hoping Don Davis would deliver the goods in JP3, but it was really quite mediocre. And neither he nor Giacchino managed to make intelligent use of JW's great themes.
Kasey Kockroach 2,345
I'm somewhat mixed. Giacchino's is by far the better more engaging score overall, but Davis plays with the theme more (like the militarized take on it near the end), while Giacchino just plays it straight. Like, boom, there it is, yeah, great, yep, yadda yadda. But again, I in turn appreciate that the theme is only played at the beginning and end. I can easily see Fallen Kingdom being an improvement, but eh, we'll see. The previews so far just seem to assure fans that, yeah, we get it, the theme hasn't been forgotten. But c'mon, Mike, babe, give us YOUR stuff. I wanna hear what YOU got, kid! Ahem, anyway... I enjoy both Davis and Giacchino's works, but the latter definitely has more going on. And no, I'm not a Mikey fan. He's not even fit to polish Powell's shoes. ...Good lord, I went way off-topic there. I think I really like talking about Jurassic stuff. Sheesh. Symphonic style though, yes. OK. I must admit that big, symphonic action scores are no longer a priority of mine (or very rarely, at least), but it used to be in the 90s and early 2000s when I was a healthy youngster. So my suggestions will mirror that. Do you also have a timeframe? I'm guessing you're mostly looking for scores in the last 3-4 decades? From perusing my own collection (about 1600 albums) -- and with your parameters in mind -- I'd recommend these: Abel Korzeniowski: COPERNICUS STAR, ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW Anything Alan Menken Alan Silvestri: BACK TO THE FUTURE 1 and 3 (skip 2), PREDATOR 2, JUDGE DREDD, THE MUMMY RETURNS, BEOWULF Angelo Badalamenti: STALINGRAD Basil Poledouris: CONAN THE BARBARIAN, FLESH & BLOOD, STARSHIP TROOPERS, THE TOUCH Bruce Broughton: SILVERADO, THE RESCUERS DOWN UNDER Cliff Eidelman: STAR TREK VI, CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: THE DISCOVERY Daniel Pemberton: THE MAN FROM UNCLE Danny Elfman: BATMAN, DARKMAN, BATMAN RETURNS, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, PLANET OF THE APES, ALICE IN WONDERLAND David Arnold: STARGATE, INDEPENDENCE DAY, GODZILLA, THE MUSKETEER, NARNIA David Newman: THE PHANTOM Don Davis: WARRIORS OF VIRTUE, THE MATRIX, TOKYO GHOUL Elliot Goldenthal: INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE, FINAL FANTASY, MICHAEL COLLINS, BATMAN 3, SPHERE Hans Zimmer : WHITE FANG Howard Shore: LOTR trilogy James Horner: STAR TREK 2, KRULL, ALIENS, AN AMERICAN TAIL, THE LAND BEFORE TIME, WILLOW, THE ROCKETEER, APOLLO 13, THE MASK OF ZORRO, TITANIC, THE PERFECT STORM, AVATAR James Newton Howard: WYATT EARP, WATERWORLD, DINOSAUR, VERTICAL LIMIT, MALEFICENT Jerry Goldsmith: FIRST BLOOD, KING SOLOMON'S MINES, LIONHEART, TOTAL RECALL, FIRST KNIGHT, GHOST AND THE DARKNESS, THE MUMMY, AIR FORCE ONE, THE 13TH WARRIOR, LEGEND, THE FINAL CONFLICT, MULAN Joel McNeely: IRON WILL, STAR WARS: SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE, YOUNG INDY 1-4 John Debney: CUTTHROAT ISLAND John Powell: HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, CHICKEN RUN John Williams: Lots of stuff... ..... Phew! This was more work than I had expected, so I'll stop there for now. Up to John Williams. I'll take the rest of the alphabet later, but this should keep you going for a while. It does have three great upbeat, dramatic cues, though. Btw, Chicken Run is a great recommendation. One could also recommend the score to the film which Chicken Run is a parody on - The Great Escape. Not very action packed, but it has a great main theme and great action music towards the end.
Thor 7,559
It does, but I'd categorize it more as a thriller score that relies on minimalist structures. There's lots of beauty and even a bit of action in that, but in trying to decipher the topic starter's parameters -- which are kinda wide, but I suspect where he's going -- I wouldn't include it in this particular case. It might just be too dark or slow.

Kasey Kockroach 2,345
Agreed, but Maleficent was one of the greatest "impulse buys" I ever made. Didn't read any reviews in advance, it was long before I ever joined this forum, couldn't care less what the movie was like. I just felt like hearing a JNH score, the CD was at Barnes & Noble, and I grabbed it on a whim. Maleficent Suite began and it's been my favorite of his ever since.
