Hmm, out of all 107 titles on their list, I have only seen these ones:

  2. The Favourite (Yorgos Lanthimos, 2018)
  3. Children of Men (Alfonso Cuaron, 2006)
  4. Ex Machina (Alex Garland, 2014)
  5. Sexy Beast (Jonathan Glazer, 2000)
  6. Shaun of the Dead (Edgar Wright, 2004)
  7. Bend It Like Beckham (Gurinder Chadha, 2002)
  8. The Death of Stalin (Armando Iannucci, 2017)
  9. 28 Days Later* (Danny Boyle, 2002)
  10. Dunkirk (Christopher Nolan, 2017)

  20. The Power of the Dog* (Jane Campion, 2021)
  21. Man on Wire* (James Marsh, 2008)
  22. Birth* (Jonathan Glazer, 2006)
  23. Calvary* (John Michael McDonagh, 2014)
  24. Gosford Park* (Robert Altman, 2001)
  25. Moon* (Duncan Jones, 2009)
  26. The Hours* (Stephen Daldry, 2002)
  27. In the Cut* (Jane Campion, 2003)
  28. The Prestige* (Christopher Nolan, 2006)
  29. Promising Young Woman* (Emerald Fennell, 2020)

A lot of those would never occur to me to think of as a "British film", especially Hollywood blockbusters like Interstellar, Dunkirk and Bond films, or really any movie a director who happens to be British makes for the Hollywood system.  Weird criteria to use here.

Anyways, Under The Skin is easily the best film of these 29, for sure - it's fantastic.  My top 5 would probably be rounded out with Children of Men, Carol, The Power of the Dog, and... ehhh I don't even know what number 5 would be.  A lot of these movies I like, but don't consider "great", and a lot of these films are really overrated.

I always thought the Bonds were considered the flagship of British film. But I'd never have thought of any of the Nolans as British, either.

I probably should watch Under the Skin again, I had a really hard time with it when I saw it. Of the list, I would consider all of these as personal favourites:

  • Chicken Run
  • The Descent
  • Casino Royale
  • In Bruges
  • Pride & Prejudice
  • Ex Machina
  • Children of Men

Or at least films I enjoy very much and/or was impressed by:

  • The Prestige
  • Sunshine
  • Moon
  • Skyfall
  • Hot Fuzz
  • Interstellar
  • The Death of Stalin
  • Dunkirk (possibly, rewatch pending)

Agreed, especially with Nolan and Bond. Nolan's true British film has to be Following.

It's a funny thing but until seeing this list I never really thought about what makes a film British, the main criteria's to me would be the script, setting, director and production company, but even then it would be a case by case basis.

Not seen Under The Skin, of the 107 only seen 19 so can't really comment on the list, although I'd put In The Loop instead of Death Of Stalin.

Also why is Inside Llewellyn Davis a British film? Of the Cohen brothers work surely The Ladykillers would be more British? (Not that it's better than Inside Llewellyn Davis mind)

The Hours would be easily in my top five. I liked Under the Skin, but it wouldn't make it into my personal top five of that list. Casino Royale is better. Children of Men and Slumdog Millionaire as well.

Probably, Under the Skin is for me even with Moon.
