I did catch a few episodes when AMC was doing their Breaking Bad marathon earlier this week. It's certainly better than I remembered, well-made and Aaron Paul is a blast as Jesse Pinkman. Bryan Cranston holds the show together, but Paul is a scene-stealer.

How I Met Your Mother 9x01-9x13

I hadn't watched a single episode of this season yet, and then finally watched all 13 aired so far today while working from home. Overall it's just about as much of a disappointment as the show generally has been for half a decade or so. All the same criticisms remain - the storylines feel dragged out, I'm sick of the never-ending "Ted still likes Robin" stuff, sick of the mother not being on the show yet and interacting with everyone every week, etc. All of these are amplified by the structure they've decided to use for the final seasons.

Basically they are turning Robin and Barney's wedding, which should have been last season's finale, into this ENTIRE season. The wedding is suddenly on Sunday now instead of Saturday, so the season can start on Friday morning and cover an hour or so per episode building up the Sunday wedding. Through episode 13 we've gotten up to Saturday night and still haven't been re-shown any of the scenes from the wedding we've been seeing since the season 6 (six!) premiere. So what have we been shown? A lot of treading water.

There are entire episodes where nothing advances at all - ie, there's a short framing story in the current timeframe before everything i the middle is a flashback. Or a bunch of antics happen for a while but in the end of the episode everything is the same as where it started. This is all standard for most sitcoms especially HIMYM, but you'd think in the final season, especially when they are doing this special structure, they'd give each episode a little more weight.

There are plenty of good moments though, and I think I'd have to say this season is generally better than the show has been in a while. I enjoy the running "ring bear" and "Thank you Linus" jokes, as well as the many call backs (come again for big fudge, the slap bet, etc). Also many ideas this season have been funny, like the Ted vs Marhal/Lilly wedding present / thank you note stuff, the "You owe me a no questions asked" stuff, etc. Also the rhyming episode was really clever and must have taken a long time to write, stage, and film/edit, and it came out really well (even though it was a completely stand alone throwaway episode).

Also Marshall and Lilly are always better together than apart. Keeping Marshall away in his own storyline for the first THIRTEEN episodes was a mistake I feel. I never cared for Daphne and the whole idea just made everything feel dragged out. The whole situation with Marshall getting the judge job in NY while Lilly got the art job in Italy is of course a big situation needing more than 1 episode to work out, but 13 weeks of it being in the air is too much. Same with Ted and Cassie, we know he's going to meet the mother on Sunday so him hitting on other girls on Friday and Saturday is just a waste of time.

One last thing to mention is The Mother. What can I say except she is perfect. She steals every scene she's in. The actress is great and the character they have written for her is terrific. She is compassionate, charming, funny, and just the right amount of quirky. And I kind of like how she has met Barney, Lilly, and Marshall now before meeting Ted. But this just amplifies how much better it would have been if she was introduced on the show a while ago and we got to spend more time with her, specifically more time with her and Ted and more time with her in the group. As it stands now, there are only 11 episodes left in the show and The Mother and Ted have not met, really making it seem like they won't meet until the final episode (heck, she was only in 5 out of the first 13). The two flashforwards they have shown of Ted and The Mother together, one the one year anniversary of the wedding / the day they met and the 2 year anniversary which is also when Ted proposed were great little scenes, but they are made less special but the fact that they were suddently shown together as being this great couple without us having seen any of their courtship or even their meeting yet.

We'll see if I start watching week to week or save the final 11 for another marathon. I guess it will air for 11 straight weeks when it comes back, so everythign will be over in March rather than the usual May.

I'm really getting into The X-Files, and regretting that I gave it such a defiant cold shoulder during its run. And so far it's toeing the line between "monster of the week" standalone episodes and the vast conspiracy arc it's known for rather well.

I appreciate the Robert Patrick episodes. He was pleasant on the eye, but so was Annabella Gish. They're episodes have been given a bad rap. The episode dealing with the death of his son is devastatingly sad. The show ended better than it should have. Both films were good. The last one was not what I expected. I was expecting a monster film but I was hoping werewolf but got Frankenstein instead.

It's really being an interesting journey so far. Watching The X-Files twenty years later is like revisiting the technology and culture that existed when I was in middle school. Scully receives a tabloid that indicates the wormed sailor came from a Russian ship, but there's an article about Nirvana on page two. When the people of Franklin, PA start killing because their fears and the digital devices tell them to, the factory has a poster of the Pittsburgh Penguins winning the Stanley Cup. The authenticity the show promotes was very cool. And the cell phones and primitive computers really put progress in perspective.

As far as the music goes, I don't think I've heard any of the sampled Jurassic Park bit that is used in the first film, as an example. But I swear I've heard some tremolos from Raiders of the Lost Ark, but I wasn't keeping track of the episodes or moments, and I'm afraid I haven't listened to the first LLL set that much.

Oh, Robert Patrick's son dies? Please tell me where in the first season and a half that happens. Anything else you'd like to "spoil" for me? Don't make up some garbage like Scully gets a baby or that Krychekk turns out to be a bad guy. It's bad enough I can't watch without thinking Cancer Man is Fox's dad.

Nothing I said is a spoiler. just as telling someone about Minority Report is a tale of man who has lost a child so is Patrick established as a character who has lost a child. Wait till you move ahead to the 3rd or 4th season episode Home. Perhaps the single most frightening episode of series television. It's much more frightening than films with similar stories.
