crocodile 8,052
Just got my Abzu CD. Didn't that he used London Voices for this. Karol
Incanus 5,725
Yes he used a chamber choir consisting of the London Voice members, a harp ensemble led by Skaila Kanga and oboe solos by Kristin Naigus plus the Nashville Scoring Orchestra so this was cross-Atlantic collaboration of forces. It is also great that he used Enūma Eliš, the Babylonian creation myth, as source for the choral lyrics instead of the group just singing oohs and aahs. Plus it gives the music additional subtextual depth.

Popular Post Incanus 5,725
Of course! But back to Wintory's music. Abzû is actually a very immersive score with both beautiful melodies, compelling atmosphere and a great narrative. It actually feels almost like a tone poem for orchestra, choir and harps rather than a video game score and you can hear that the composer had time to develop the music (throughout the 3 year period) and its architecture both for the game and for the album as it works excellently on disc. Just got Assassin's Creed Syndicate CDs yesterday in the mail. Another great musical concept (chamber music approach with strings and woodwinds) executed skilfully and most of all allowed by the producers of the game, whereas someone else would have played it safe and demanded music in line with some of the previous instalments or perhaps wanted to give it a modern sound. Makes for a great listen on discs too. Wintory is a composer I on one hand would love to hear branching into bigger films but on the other the freedom and inventiveness that the video games seem to offer to him also produce great results, so it would great to hear what he can come up for those. Hopefully he'll be able to do both in the future. KK, Taikomochi and crocodile

Incanus 5,725
Four people express liking a score. Yes very suspect indeed. While both Journey and Abzû try to achieve a similar atmosphere and immersive feel, they go about realizing it very differently tone-wise.

No matter your tastes, it's as good this kind of writing goes these days. For me, tonally, it's somewhere between more otherwordly passages of A.I. clashed with watery Thomas Newman. With a tiny tiny pinch of Howard Shore's choral splendour. And, at the same time, it sounds nothing like any of the above. Karol

I haven't fully explored it away from the game, but that's because I find that it serves the exact same function in terms of mood and tone. Meditative with great orchestral color, but this time around, a lack of clear narrative progression and visceral impact.
