I seem to remember watching twenty minutes of it while sleepy on from wine, before switching it off, bored. The uncanny valley was pretty off-putting, and coupled with turgid tone it just didn't seem to work.

I was already familiar with the score's main theme, which veers a bit too close to Zimmer territory,

The Main theme brilliantly captures the character of Boewulf in the first part of the film. Arrogant, a blowheart, over the top, always announcing his own greatness.

Silvestri's theme is without subtlety, because of that reason.

It does suit the character, I admit. Actually, I quite like the first phrase of the melody - I think I just find that the rest of the melody doesn't deliver, and there are aspects of the orchestration that I think are just a bit too much.

what a terrible actor.

Needed a change from the usual fodder so decided pick three famous films that, strangely enough, I've never watched: In the Mood For Love, Paths of Glory and Russian Ark.

Watching my double Ray tribute.

The Beast from 20000 Fathoms. A tribute to Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury.

Paths of Glory is the shit.

That's not a compliment.

It's intended as a compliment, yes, and I agree with the sentiment. Fantastic film.

Posted

sorry but to call a film shit is calling a film shit. Not a compliment but an insult. but it's a very minor film from kubrick,

Posted

Check your Strunk and White, Joey. It's the shit. The definite article transforms the derogatory tense to the vernacular complimentary. (Though most contemporary grammarians will replace the with the more proper da.)

Still wouldn't have used that term to describe that particular movie, though. If we were talking instead about something like The Terminator, I might use it, since it would be more fitting to that sort of movie. But not about a complex first world war film which deals with very real dilemmas.

Posted

Not to be a Chaacy or anything but Paths Of Glory is one of my most uninteresting Kubrick experiences together with Spartacus.

Posted

Quite the opposite for me. I find it engaging and riveting, while still somehow retaining that unmistakable Kubrick starkness and economy. Later in his career he would rarely merge these tonal and thematic elements together in his work, if ever. Which in itself is interesting.

Never been big on Spartacus, but it's okay Bank Holiday Monday fair.

I've never watched it. And Lolita. And it so happens they're both on my shelf.

Karol

You'll like it, crocs, it's very Spielbergy.

OTOH, Lolita is da shit!

Hey man! The Terminator deals with real dilemma's!

What is Sarah Conner had died? You ever think about that shit!

I'm glad to say that I never think about "The Terminator" at all. AAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!!!! I JUST DID!!! D'OH!!!!

How does that secure me "liking it"?

Unless you're being sarcastic...

If you're not into message movies then skip it. It is the sort of thing Spielberg makes nowadays, but the style is Kubrick. That means you don't get the often preachy heavy-handedness you get with the Beard. Paths of Glory is a magnificent film.

It just does, don't ask me why.

OK, the first maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of this movie was actually pretty good. I liked that Tony had PTSD after the alien attack in New York and his venture into the wormhole, and I liked that Happy had an important role in the film. I also liked that after Stark's Malibu home is destroyed he is lost alone with a non-working suit and has to fight to survive, kinda like the start of the first Iron Man.

But then things just kept getting more and more ridiculous, the plot holes kept getting bigger and bigger, and I had an Alex Cremers moment where I realized maybe 2/3 of the way through that they are making these films for 13 year olds now. The last 45 minutes was just a long action sequence with CGI blobs fighting each other in the sky, just like The Avengers (only not as funny).

I guess Marvel isn't interesting in making movies for adults any more.

I enjoyed the first 2 Iron man films, and Captain America. Don't remember much of Incredible Hulk, and Thor was fine for what it was (you can let the more fantastical things slide in a movie about gods and aliens as opposed to the Iron Man series which for the first 2 entries were grounded in science, albeit pseudo-science)

But The Avengers and Iron Man 3 are rubbish.

Posted

They are the only two I think that were made with any sense of intelligence and wit for me.

I guess Americans and Europeans watch films very very differently.

Karol

Posted

How can you say Iron Man 3 was intelligent when it was full of huge, gaping plot holes?

I could write a dozen paragraphs about everything wrong with the film

Posted

Well, maybe what you call plot holes is completely irrelevant for me.

welcome to me and Star Trek 2009

Forget it, Joey. It's gansta talk.

that's sadly retarded(mentally challenge, courtesy of the fake PC policeman). I have no use for that kind of talk when complimenting something. It's just foul.

Very minor?

It's my second favourite. Absolutely perfect. I fucking cried.

And I didn't say it was shit, I said it was the shit!

Yes it's considered a minor Kubrick, it's not considered among his best works.

Most would place 2001, the Shining, Dr. Strangelove, Lolita, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket higher. Personally I don't care I only own Strangelove (thanks Koray)

Jason I think you're a little hard on Iron Man 3.

it's a flawed film to be sure but it's not rubbish. I do have the same problem with you about the cgi ending but Downey's commanding presence in the films grounds it well enough. I found it satisfying and it has the best post credits ending of all the Marvel films.

Posted

That post-credit scenes kind of justifies any "plot holes" and "silly stuff", if you think about it.

The acting was fantastic all around. RDJ was great, even Gwynneth Paltrow was good and finally had something to do. Guy Pearce was great, Ben Kingsley was fantastic. No complaints about the acting, or about the first maybe half of the film.

It just degraded after that into juvenile silliness.

To everybody dissing on Paths of Glory: fuck you!

I don't think anyone dissed it.

Sadly, you chose a very poor word to complain about your distaste for the phrase "the shit." Please do not use the word retarded loosely for such trivial matters. That's gay.
