Williams seems much more energetic in the last couple of little interviews we have seen. That is great to see.

Excellent Mari, thanks for sharing!! That ET recording sessions footage is a perennial favorite of mine, having captivated my 10-year old self back in 1982. :)

I think the E.T. experiment in the video illustrates why film music has gotten so backgroundy. With today's visual and audio technology, a lot of what the music was doing there could be achieved visually.

Neat tribute though!

And fantastic advice from John Williams himself about the importance of getting something, anything down on paper, and then refining and iterating. It applies to virtually every field. Creative, technical, physical.

Like in GRAVITY, for example?

Great piece! I hardly recognized Williams without his glasses in the archive footage.

A lovely tribute. :)

Again with the friggin' TREES?!? :D

Posted

Trees probably sponsor him every time he name drops them.

Most others would find themselves confined to a comfy padded cell when they start talking about trees whispering to them. In an artist's case people just think he is his adorable eccentric artistic self.

THE TREES MADE ME DO IT!

Lol is he British? Used the word "bloody"

But I agree he seemed really energetic. Great video!

Great video indeed. And it was great to see this in very good quality, both picture and sound.

Hate those clips whit poor sound and pic.

Where can one find those ET recording sessions? Were they in the extras on the Bluray?

Posted

Wow, ABC is allowing me to watch it from Canada, they must have forgot to flip the region restriction switch

And there we have it confirmed , Trees are the most inspiring things to JW, so the answer to "most genuine piece" has to be about trees

Someone should make a gif or an animated pic of Williams hugging a tree.

The et 20th anniversary dvd also had some recording sessions footage

I think it's this one.

He seems more high-spirited and energetic in this interview than a lot of his recent ones. Nice!

Thanks for sharing!

And with all this talk of trees, Williams should have scored The Happening.

Thank you for sharing the those clips. I've never seen those before!

If Williams had composed LOTR, Treebeard's theme would have been the greatest theme ever written :biglaugh: . The Woodland realm being the highlight of his Hobbit ;)

Yeah I do that in news writing. I jot down the crappiest article imaginable longhand and then type it and refine it before filing it to the editor, who neurotically tinkers with it until he thinks it's ready for the publish button.

Stephen King always said the same thing about writing novels, or writing in general. Something every day. Keeps the creative juices flowing and prevents stagnation.

Hemingway was similar. His method consisted of writing every day but never writing too much. Stop at your high points and pick up where you left off later.

And think of your best stuff in the loo or the shower when you don't have a pen and paper around. Or a tablet or whatever kids are using these days. Reminds me of Three Men and a Baby when Tom Sellick had a phone installed in the shower.
