  1. Hey Sharky, I do think it's just a sequence of augmented chords (starting on G -> Ab -> G.......G.......Gb.........Ab -> A -> Ab). I rendered this sequence with two bassoons playing the top two notes and bass clarinet playing the bottom note. Have a listen and judge for yourself, if it's similar: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/18637418/senate%20chords%202.flac I did miss out two chords in the middle but I still think they're all augmented. As for the chord at 0:51, the best I could come up with is: I think I hear a Db in the bass, and I guessed to put an E natural in there based on the fact the winds are playing that note in the high register. I think the way Williams approached it is to have the minor chord of the tritone away from the E in the bass (if that makes sense!). I'm not really sure though, what do you think?
  2. I'm not surprised that's what it sounds like, most likely the result of Williams passing his sketches on to a beginner orchestrator who had trouble reading Williams' handwriting. Mistook the accent marks for staccato marks, an easy mistake to make. Not to even mention the misreadings in the percussion section...
  3. I hope we don't see Duel of the Fates or Battle of the Heroes back. I also hope we don't see the Imperial March back. Or the Star Wars theme for that matter. Gimme something new and complex, baby.
  4. Two disc version. I heard an excerpt ('score suite' on Youtube), liked the sound of it, and decided to just get everything at once.
  5. Listened to it for the first time on Wednesday. I really like it. It feels like a huge bombastic JW score, but is slightly lacking in thematic development, which can make it difficult to listen to on the album. Still, great score and I would recommend it to anybody who's into orchestral music. 4.5/5
  6. Indeed, if we don't need to keep to three pieces then I would definitely keep Jewish Town. That would then be a very interesting four-part suite to listen to IMO.
  7. Was the song "Any Day Now" (cut from the 1971 film Fiddler on the Roof) composed by Williams or somebody else? Who wrote the lyrics?
  8. Source So apparently the Prussian Requiem was recorded last week, but it seems like we will be getting some film suites as well. Can't wait!
  9. Bit OT but I would replace Jewish Town with Auschwitz-Birkenau (that didn't come off very well did it?) because A-B showcases the lower range of the violin a bit and conveys a different kind of emotion from the other two, creating a more varied suite. Although on one hand I suppose it might come off as a bit dark and insensitive to some... As for the order of the first and third pieces, perhaps it's so that the audience can look forward to hearing the 'very' famous 'main theme' at the end? Although I didn't even know that there existed a 'suite' of this score before entering this thread. Remembrances does sound like a more solid closing piece, though. Also, is Remembrances really a development of the main theme? It sounds to me like a separate melody (but similar in tone). Or maybe the main theme is a development of the Remembrances theme???
  10. So I'm a JW fan, a huge Indy fan, and a Londoner...there's no way I'm not going to see this. I've bought tickets! This is the first time I'm going to something like this, but I've always wanted to experience a live orchestra playing during a film screening. I'm very interested in how it'll turn out.
  11. Few excerpts from Temple of Doom: 2:02 - 2:20 I've noticed that whenever Williams goes aleatoric like this, with the strings going crazy, he decorates around it by adding short phrases and 'snippets' to make the music more interesting. For example here, on top of the strings you hear the bassoon, then clarinet, then horns...all of which give entirely different sounds, and keep the listener engaged. 0:30 - 0:37 This is like some sort of tribal dance on acid...(and I should also give special mention to those orchestral slides down, which are also great snippets!) And a couple more from the Harry Potter series: 1:39 - 1:45 If there's one snippet of music in Harry Potter that sounds definitely 'wizardly', it's this! (this also appears in "Cornish Pixies" in CoS) 2:09 - 2:15 I like the counterpoint in this one!
