  1. I’ve said before you’re wrong on this. In the original film, Luke was conceived by a Jedi who was not Darth Vader, hence this conception took place ~20 years ago, hence it was less than 20 years before the film that Darth Vader “turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights… betrayed and murdered your father. NOW the Jedi are all but extinct.” In fact it’s not till day 3 of the film that “The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away.”
  2. Hm, someone’s been studying their Ricky Gervais.
  3. I’ve been thinking about that. Not sure it’s fair. Jakku was a desert planet, to be sure, but there can be more than one. By not actually going back to Tatooine, they avoided a nice nostalgia trip of running into all our familiar species and architectural sites. Instead everything there was stuff we had never seen before. Lor San Tekka’s village/Church of the Force. The Starship Graveyard. The junkyard marketplace. It felt Star Warsey without being too fangasmic.
  4. I like the Adventures of Superman TV show from the 50s, and do put it on the TV set for my younger kids. My 9yo son and I watch Superman: The Movie: Extended Cut + Supeman II from time to time. Great stuff!
  5. Glad I’m an immigrant’s son. My father didn’t go through UNIMAGINABLE TRIALS so his son could grow up to be a cartoon-watching man-baby.
  6. See, this is all Greek to me. And that’s fine. It’s just not for me. I’ll just sit out the present TV-verse and await the next reboot.
  7. So this show is for fans of the cartoons, then. Damn. Hard pass.
  8. Do you guys really think this show will reference other spinoffs? I figured it would be solidly grounded in Eps. I-VI only for maximal mainstream appeal.
  9. Serious question. Is the title, The Last Jedi, an allusion to The Last Ringbearer?
  10. Yep, it appears that their current deal is for six episodes and 2-3 “movies” per year over the next 6 years. Parker and Stone burned out on South Park years ago, and I’ll take the present trickle over nothing at all, hands down. When it’s good it’s still the very best satire around.
  11. Yes, Stephen Oliver nailed it IMO. Donald Swann and Leonard Rosenman also both did a great job, albeit within the conventions of their respective genres. I would say the same of Shore.
  12. I would guess he was fond of the theme, but unhappy with the original concert arrangement because it’s a relatively unimaginative arrangement. TFA and Fisher’s death gave him two reasons to revisit the theme with melancholy.
  13. I thought I would do a quick-and-dirty analysis of the popularity of the books vs. the seasons of the show. A Storm of Swords was the basis for seasons 3-4 of Game of Thrones. The book has a 4.54 rating on Goodreads, and those seasons each have a 97% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A Game of Thrones was the basis for season 1 of Game of Thrones. The book has a 4.44 rating on Goodreads, and that season a 96% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A Clash of Kings was the basis for season 2 of Game of Thrones. The book has a 4.41 rating on Goodreads, and that season a 96% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A Dance with Dragons was the basis of season 5 of Game of Thrones. The book has a 4.32 rating on Goodreads, and that season has a 90% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. So far so good. Season 6 of Game of Thrones comes in at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a bit surprising to me, as I thought the season was really flailing. Some of the story material was mined from the not-well-regarded A Feast for Crows, which comes in at 4.14 on Goodreads. However, at a much-touted meeting with the showrunners, George R.R. Martin apparently poured out the answers to various mysteries and the direction of various storylines — for example, things to do with Bran, the origin of the White Walkers, Hodor, Aerys and wildfire, Jon, and Stannis—and these beans were all unceremoniously spilled in Season 6. I will say the finale of this season was magnificent, and probably colored the generally favorable reception of this season. Seasons 7 and 8 of Game of Thrones are not based on any books at all, and they fall to 82% and 30%, respectively. There are two remaining books which are being used as the basis for spinoffs. Fire & Blood is the basis of the upcoming House of the Dragon, but the book is a real snoozer with a 3.92 rating at Goodreads. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is better-liked but still no phenomenon, with a 4.21 rating at Goodreads. It will be the basis of the Tales of Dunk and Egg series.
  14. He did write a theme for him in the original movie, it was kind of forgettable though.
  15. “Performed by Joe Kraemer” = just synthesized tho?
  16. According to A Guide to the Star Wars Universe, Second Edition (1994), Anakin Skywalker was born in the year 55 BBY, and by Star Wars Encyclopedia (1998) this was changed to 41 BBY. Episode I is set at a point in the timeline which had long been established as the END of the Clone Wars. Obviously at some point in the creative process Anakin Skywalker was in his 20s in Episode I, and I imagine the centerpiece planet was originally Alderaan rather than Naboo. Episode II could have then been essentially RotS without Order 66, and Episode III could have advanced forward a few years and been about Darth Vader hunting down the Jedi (hopefully characters we cared about from the previous two films). By the way, both the 1994 and 1998 timeline have Obi-Wan Kenobi’s birth year as 60 BBY. This makes Ewan MacGregor 28 in TPM (exactly the actor’s age) and Alec Guinness 60 in SW (just 3 years off the actor’s age). Not sure why this was retconned.
  17. I don’t care if it was real or staged; clearly there was a backstory. What is the backstory?? - I love you, Jada! - G.I. Jane joke - Will Smith laughs - Rock says something about “jealous”?? - smack - wow Will Smith just smacked the bleep out of me! - Keep my wife’s NAME out yo bleepin MOUF! - It was a G.I. Jane joke - NO! Keep my wife’s NAME out yo bleepin MOUF! He wasn’t mad about the joke! Does this have to do with the Smiths’ open marriage?
