  1. I think I know what the upcoming animated film is. Dreamworks cancelled a movie called B.O.O: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations around ten years ago. It went really far into production. Apparently it was almost complete. Doyle was set to score it, having worked with the director on Igor (and later The Emoji Movie). According to Variety, the movie has been revived and will be released this year. Most Anticipated Movie Performances 2024: Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande (variety.com) The movie will likely be bad, but it's at least a fairly high profile gig, and I really like the score for The Emoji Movie.
  2. Music Matters - The sounds of Christmas - BBC Sounds Patrick says he's currently working on a musical, but it's all under wraps at the moment. I'm assuming this is the animated film he said he was going to be working on.
  3. I know it seems almost trivial to think about, but I can't help but wonder what happens with Elfman's upcoming/would-have-been-upcoming projects in the meantime. Beetlejuice 2 The Actor Rhona Who Lives By The River Wednesday Season 2 (?) Raimi's upcoming horror movie (?) Baumbach's upcoming drama (?) Does Burton/Raimi's clout allow him to keep working until more is revealed? Do studios/producers even care since Elfman's face isn't on screen? I know he started working on Beetlejuice 2 in early October.
  4. I rewatched it for the first time since seeing it in cinema. I liked it before, but I really like it now. I do still hate the opening. The deaging CGI is gross and having such a Spielberg-inspired opening really exposes how Berg runs rings around...everyone...when it comes to that sort of thing. But once it settles into its own thing after the prologue, I really dig it. The idea that one of these things commits to a message of 'Stop living in the past' is genuinely interesting, and, yes, more than a little hypocritical - but still. I find the ending really moving.
  5. A judge granted film and television composer Danny Elfman’s motion to order a woman to arbitrate rather than litigate her claims he breached the terms of a sexual harassment settlement agreement and owes $85,000. Woman Ordered to Arbitrate Settlement Contract Breach Suit Against Elfman - MyNewsLA.com
  6. One of the Chris Young releases is his new score for 'The Piper' for which he wrote a twenty-minute flute concerto. The album will have the concerto and then 20 mins of score.
  7. Doyle recorded his Piano Fantasia recently. It'd be cool if all these pieces were released together.
  8. I live near Leeds, but I stayed in Glasgow last night. I jump at the chance to come here. I must have seen a dozen concerts here at this point. It reminds me of home (Ireland).
  9. I was at Patrick's 70th birthday concert this evening in Glasgow. I was sat next to a group of very broad and fun Scots. After I heard some lighthearted heckling, I realised I was sat next to Doyle's family! All very friendly and funny. His son, also a composer, is his double. Grant and Capaldi were hilarious hosts. Each took turns delivering a a mini stand up routine detailing comically ridiculous moments in Doyle's life. Here was the setlist: Henry V - St Crispin's Day My Father's Favourite - Sense and Sensibility La Valse de L'Amour and Pumpkin Pursuit - Cinderella Train Away - Wah-Wah Overture - Much Ado About Nothing The Blue Sea and the White Horse - Into the West (sung by Abigal Doyle) It's Only a Diary - Bridget Jones's Diary Remember Me - Carlito's Way King Charles III Coronation March Interval Scottish Overture Corarsik Calling the Night - Whisky Galore! (sung by Mairi MacInnes) The Creation - Mary Shelly's Frankenstein Never Forget - Murder on the Orient Express (sung by Nuala Doyle) Potter's Waltz and Harry in Winter - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Merida's Home and The Games - Brave Encore Thor Kills the Destroyer I would've loved to have heard some of Indochine or East-West, but I appreciate that events like these will always be 'Greatest Hits'. I loved hearing 'Carlito's Way'. And, as much as I can't stand what it represents, the Coronation March sounded fantastic with a full orchestra.
  10. Elfman's updated website mentions that the percussion concerto will be recorded in Liverpool.
  11. I thought the film and score were alright. The series continues to be absolutely plagued by terrible temp tracking. Why is the Katniss theme here in such a prominent scene? The theme for Rue/rebellion/hope now plays...when Snow enters the... Capitol. What? It's so muddy. I don't know what any of these themes are. I get that music and themes are abstract, but it drives me a bit mad. Music that plays wonderment in one score is reprised to play horror in the next. JNH managed to recently write some excellent thematic scores for David Yates of all people, so I'm going to assume that this is a Francis Lawrence issue. Having said that, I much preferred the action music in this one. It didn't have that weird shrill and synthetic sound that the last score had. The 'Mercy' track that was released seemed like a weird choice for a buzz track, but that cue really is lovely in context. No new themes stood out, but they were clearly there, and I'm sure they'll reveal themselves in subsequent listens. The score was mostly pleasant, if not particularly interesting.
  12. Joins Multiverse of Madness and Wakanda Forever in the 'sequel scores that all but abandon what was good about the first but are far more interesting to me' pile. Really digging this.
  13. He mentioned he was scoring a film called The Actor a few months ago. Radio silence since then.
  14. I'm glad it sounds like it's different to the others. The thematic material is those scores is too muddy. I'm excited for this.
  15. I haven't seen the movie since it came out, but this seems very much to be an album presentation.
  16. I don't think there's been any recent mentions of Spider-Man 2 being unlikely. Though there were plenty quite a few years ago. I would say that Neumation's release of Elfman's original full score for Spider-Man 2 would be an encouraging sign. I remember it being said that they approached Bartek about releasing Spider-Man and he instead wanted them to release Spider-Man 2. Debney and Young's contributions may complicate matters, but I think a complete version of Elfman's score is possible.
  17. Main new takeaways are that none of the recent concert works are recorded yet and that he's seemingly still on Beetlejuice 2.
  18. I like that it's broken down who did what. Netflix did that for Wednesday, too. More of this!
  19. Girl on the Train is super interesting! That's a top 10 Elfman for me. Elfman at his storytelling best.
  20. I loved the show, but I had the exact same problem as you. Sometimes the brass were so loud it almost hurt and the end of the Beetlejuice suite became a muddy mess. At the same time, it really worked for the Wednesday suite. It felt like it became a rock concert for two minutes.
  21. I dunno if he's added suites for Big Eyes or Dumbo, but Wednesday will have a presence tomorrow.
