John Williams & the Vienna Philharmonic: January 18/19 2020
12-Mile Reef replied to Ricard's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
You can watch it as a 'visual album' on Apple Music/iTunes. I would have much preferred them to release it as a straightforward release in the movies section as other concerts have been though. -
John Williams & the Vienna Philharmonic: January 18/19 2020
12-Mile Reef replied to Ricard's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
There's so much negativity in this thread that it's bumming me out and I think I'll avoid it until I've seen the concert for myself. I'm not saying that we shouldn't be critical but surely we can enjoy this for what it is rather than nitpicking about what it isn't? It's the first time we've had a complete concert conducted by John Williams on Blu-Ray and it's with one of the best orchestras in the world! My copy is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow and I can't wait to sit down and enjoy it. -
Just one more Williams score per studio, which would you pick?

Intrada seem to be in with Sony too, they did 'Legends of the Fall' recently but I think there have been others as well. -
Love these Tintacle, thanks for sharing!

I've always assumed they are in 'Costa Rican Standoff' as the brass sounds huge in that track but I have no idea. Would love to find out definitively if anyone knows.

Thanks Falstaft, most appreciated. Let's hope for a transcript of the full interview one day, sounds like it would be a fascinating read! -
The Legacy of John Williams (Website & Podcast)

This was a great episode and it made me go back and listen to Frank Lehman's first appearance on the podcast which is also a terrific listen. There is an interesting distinction made between the more developmental use of themes by Wagner versus the more citational use by Prokofiev and that Williams was closer to the Prokofievien. Lehman mentions Williams candidly saying that he didn't particularly like Wagner's music in an interview with Grace Edgar. I'd love to read the full interview but can't find it anywhere online, does anyone have a copy that they can share here? -
Has anyone made any alternate covers for this or even have a high res version of the Intrada cover? I found this nice scan of the LP to use for the original album tracks:

- remastered
- expanded

This just arrived in the post from Intrada. Apologies if this is addressed in the liner notes but I had a few questions about the 'Bonus Album Tracks' at the end of disc 3. I'm assuming these were all made for potential inclusion in the original album but they didn't make the cut? Do we know where they would have been placed within the original album? I'm assuming the extended 'Mina/Dracula' and 'The Hunt Builds' replace the same cues but do we know where the other 3 would have gone? If not does anyone who has the set have any suggestions for where to put them in a playlist with the original album?

Great work Andrewz, I'd been trying to find a high res version of this too so this is most appreciated! -
I love the Wagner Tuba, it’s such a distinct instrument that can sound incredibly noble in the ring cycle or Bruckner’s symphonies or be used to make the brass section sound huge in scores like the ‘The Core’ or ‘Jurassic World’. www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlU7PMlSOkU It's often hard to get such specific information re: orchestration, I only knew of their use in 'Jurassic World' because of the great photographs from the sessions at scoringsessions.com. Christopher Gordon used it in ‘Moby Dick’ and wikipedia (not always reliable I know…) lists John Williams among the composers who have written for it. Does anyone know what scores John Williams used it on if this is true?

Mine has just been delivered here in the UK too. Tracking still has it in transit between facilities in the US so perhaps there isn't as much of a backlog as thought. -

Many thanks for the google doc on this one Jason, really helpful in working out what's what on the two releases, I was getting really confused trying to figure it out myself! -

So it appears that this is an issue inherent to the original recording, it appears quietly on the right channel on both disc 2 and on the original album release. it's just much more prominent and on both channels in the main film score presentation. It sounds like a recording error to me or is it something heard on the stage? Really satisfied and enjoying this release but just curious as to what this is.
