I will be seeing a TIFF screening of this film on September 17th. I've actually never been to the festival in any capacity and am very excited for the experience! I mean, what could be more special than the latest Spielberg/Williams collaboration?

Looking forward to reporting back in a couple of weeks!

    Don't you mean the last?

  2. This may be a little random but here it is anyway. I interviewed the creator of the XBOX who once worked on a game for THE LOST WORLD called TRESPASSER. And during the conversation I bring up the game's wonderful music score by Bill Brown. And, well... Seamus brings up something interesting Bill said about John Williams that may make ya'll angry at first, haha. But just keep listening.

The moment happens at around 26:23.

  3. All signs they need to just do one more season... and no more, lol. I think I only have it in me for one more at this point, no matter if its good or not. I feel like there is only so much further they could got at this point, especially.

And how will everyone react if it DOESN'T get another season (which is a real possibility, especially since the finale already aired and we still haven't heard anything)? Would you feel satisfied enough? I wouldn't, really. I think if it doesn't get a proper ending at this point, I would honestly just regard Seasons 1 and 2 as the show and probably never watch Seasons 3-4 again. In a way they almost do feel like two different shows when split in the middle.

  4. Some of these confused mysteries are likely why people stopped with this show altogether (as the low viewing numbers clearly show they have). And I remember people having issues with LOST! Hah! That was nothing compared to this! ;) I still am enjoying this show enough to see it play out, but I admit at this point they may even be confusing themselves or forgetting their own mysteries, perhaps.

I think another problem is how meaningless death is on the show. They made a big deal about Dolores dying, making it all dramatic and etc, but then who do we see right away in Season 4? Sure, it's not really the same version of her that "died". But it still is part of this precedent of "Oh, 'So and So' just died. Set the clock now, I wonder when they'll come back." I fully expect to see "another version" of Hale and William in Season 5, if there is one; for example. I'll be more surprised if we don't than if we do at this point.

  5. So, first of all thank you everyone for your responses! This prompted me to do what felt like the most sensible thing: see the movie, lol. Luckily it was easy to do. The longer cut is on the Tubi app for free if anyone is curious, but it is also on Shudder for anyone who has that (I currently do because I want to see Phil Tippett's "Mad God", but haven't gotten around to it yet since I am told it is... really gross. Hahaha. So I need to be in the right mood.).

The movie is... well it's a strange one for sure, haha! And I am all about strange! I love sci-fi movies from any era (hell one of my favorite sci-fi films is Metropolis from 1925). But I don't know... something was really off about this movie. I think the directing and pacing? The concept was great, I just don't think it was executed incredibly well, apart from some cool scenes of the life-sucked people looking appropriately gross and creepy. I think this is a film that would benefit from a remake/reimagining honestly. Before you throw food at me, movies like John Carpenter's THE THING or David Cronenberg's THE FLY are some prime examples of just how good remakes can be.

I am glad you all warned me about Mancini's main titles being a bit misleading since... dear God, it was! LOL. I think it popped up maybe a couple more times before the end credits? And when it did, it felt HORRIBLY out of place in the film to me! It was used as some "vampire zombies" were leaping onto a helicopter as the lead characters were getting away from the city, during the third act. It just felt... way tonally off. It robbed any suspense that sequence could have had. Honestly, the more I hear that awesome "main title theme", it seriously doesn't go with the movie at all. It feels more akin to a fun western or something. Not this wild movie about space vampires! I'm not sure what the thought process was, to be honest. Did the director want this adventurous theme, or was it the composer's doing?

The rest of the score was interesting/good though! It was sometimes hard to tell who did what music while watching it, but I was able to pick out some of Kamen's (he has a style I am a little familiar with from other scores he has done). And don't get me wrong, I like Mancini as well! It's just so odd that his theme, that honestly sucked me right in as soon as I heard it, was so "miscast" for this score.

This is all just my views/opinion of course. I am thankful you all gave me the heads up to check this out first. I don't regret seeing the movie! But, I think I may pass on the score releases overall. However, let me know if they contain a lot more music NOT in the film that would be worth visiting, since that is my only source of hearing it so far!

  6. Yeaaaaah, to me it was all a bit too messy by the end, like you said. Like I was literally confused "OH! So this is a bigger deal than I thought!". LOL. And I bet we won't get any concrete answers to those questions you raised.

In a way, it sort of did feel like a series finale? I mean all the main characters are "dead". Dolores is just in the system and not even in the "real world". And they kind of imply what she plans to do next. So it's this weird in-between of a cliffhanger and a inferred conclusion. Honestly, with the way it ended, I am not sure how they would really go about the next season at all, if there is one.

  7. Honestly, my memory isn't accurate enough to answer that definitively. However, I do recall hearing the "ride music" in the queue at Hollywood when Botanicus appears, and MAYBE pieces of it in the ride itself. I could be wrong about it being in Florida's now, since I only went on it once while I was there and was too caught up in my nostalgia to remember. I just know for sure about the Botanicus appearance in the queue being when I had heard it in Hollywood. I think someone else on this forum is pretty knowledgeable about the ride (forget who). They had said that other music that played in the queue/ride came from alternates that were finally released in LLL's set.

But yes, at least one piece from the ride that remains unreleased is that wild music that plays when you see all the ETs haha. But if I recall, it wasn't made by Williams himself? So that may be why.

  8. This season was definitely an improvement over Season 3, but I still am not sure I liked where this show went after Season 2. However, I am still on board enough where I definitely do want one more season... but JUST one more. I hope they will be able to make a good ending for what they have set up here, even though it's still not what I really wanted or expected. But that's just me.

I will say probably my biggest criticism is that for me it was unclear the whole season if it was JUST this city that was under Hale's control, or if it was indeed the whole world. By the end I do think they made it clear the whole world ended up being infected, but I guess it still just didn't feel that way until it was merely said. This is a case where I think "show VS tell" would have been better (since we only see the control and the carnage in and around the city), but I understand it was a limited TV show budget. I guess the stakes were just uncertain for me until the end? Speaking of budget, I felt like the effects weren't as polished this season like they were in others. I imagine their budget decreased after Season 3... and I shudder to think how low it could go if they do get to make another one.

I did love the Dolores stuff, and the music in all of her scenes, too. It was some of the best stuff I'd seen in a while, and it was really cool how her story played out (even though that too got a little confusing in the final episode, I still managed to make sense of it).
