  1. Definitely the Alien Quadrilogy. Every part of each film's production is covered, with some very cool bits focusing on the composers too. And of course, you get two versions of each film. Blade Runner (the newest release) is also outstanding. And I quite enjoy the extras on the special editions of the Batman films. I like the way the "making of" is just like one big documentary spread across the discs.
  2. I was also under the impression that the limit was in place to "protect" the performers from having their excellent sight reading skills exploited, by rattling through cue after cue. Seems silly to me, but there are lots of MU regulations that don't make a lot of sense
  3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony Obviously Jessie you got a lot to learn about scoring. A composer can write a 40 minute piece of music and break it up how he sees fit or how the director wants it. Nope. A composer writes several pieces and then can join them together how he or the director sees fit. As was clearly done in the Indy movies... that's why the tracks are presented on the CD that way. I think we are talking in circles. -------------------------------------------------------- let's also not forget some limitations, such as those enforced by the British Musician's Union which dictate how many minutes of score are recorded each day. Surely that has an effect on the length of pieces. Obviously more so when recorded in England. I have no idea if similar rules apply in America apologies for not quoting Jessie correctly...... it all went a bit odd. Also, I guess that argument is totally void when you consider the skill of the "music editor" but it's still possible something to consider
  4. YES! I hear that too! some of you guys who are older or young and damaged their ears can't hear it, it is at a very high frequency.. it is annoying as hell for me. Yeah... it is. well..... this is a good and a bad thing! At least i'm not going crazy. But man, I find it so difficult to listen to. But it also assures me that after years of stupidly loud gigging, I've still got some hearing range up there! I used to have a TV that gave off almost the same frequency, but I could only hear it if I wasn't in the same room as it. All very odd.
  5. anyone else wish to share an equally insightful account? Don't think i'm hearing things. And i've checked my CD for it too, incase it was an issue with the rip I made.
  6. I'm sat here now listening to TOD, and I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but does anyone else hear the almost painful high pitched whine during "To Pankot Palace"? It starts on track 8 almost dead on 1:21. It's most noticable around 2:13, but it's there right until the end of the track. It's causing me to skip it every time.
  7. konstantinos, that's some nice work you're doing there!! And great to see Mr Guttenberg!! I thought I would share this with you. It's a theme tune I was asked to write for a friend's series of Podcasts for his website. That was a while ago now, and I don't know if the podcasts will be happening anytime soon, so I figured someone might as well hear it!! It came out rather David Arnoldy I think! http://files.filefront.com/Jim+Wilson+Wond...;/fileinfo.html The name is a bit silly, but it made sense with the website!!
  8. I might be wrong in saying this.... but I believe the music from that scene is actually in the Burbs score too. I know there is a cue that appears in both films. I think it's this one. If anyone knows what i'm talking about, please either confirm or correct me!
  9. Surely we buy these film score cd's because we want the music, not because we want one of 3,000 copies of something. Sure, from a collectability point of view, I like the fact that i've got a 1st edition blue box, or the Knight Rider cd, or Masters Of The Universe etc etc, but I would still be just as glad to own them if someone re-released them. I bought them because I love the music. They were Limited releases because that's what it took to get them released. It had no effect on my buying them, only maybe the time frame in which i had to do it. Think it bothers me that there was a second edition of the Blue Box? Not one bit. If anything I'm happy that more people have access to it. I don't get the attitude some people have when it comes to releases of this kind. FSM are doing an awesome job in my eyes, and this re-release of the omega man has just put them even higher up in my estimation.
  10. I'd love it if you could send me a PM with the link too. I have this ripped off youtube, but anything better quality would be great. Cheers
  11. Yes, sorry. I should have specified which Merlin I was talking about! It is infact the new BBC TV series that has been naughty and pilfered from Shore and Williams!! I'd love to get some clips and show you what I'm on about. If I have time, I might try and grab some bits off iPlayer.
  12. Anyone catch this on BBC1 last night? I only saw part of it..... thought it looked a bit rubbish to be honest...... but the music caught my ear. Bit "bigger" sounding than I was expecting for a tea time BBC series. But then again, I suppose Doctor Who is now pretty huge sounding. And I have no idea what the music was like for Robin Hood. Anyway.... i'm getting off my point. Which was........ I spotted a fair few bits in the score that were lifted pretty much directly from Lord Of The Rings. And then, bizarrely, I noticed a little part taken right out of "Parade Of The Ewoks." Someone's been a bit cheeky!!!
  13. Man, I knew Anthony Daniels could be a bit difficult..... but that was quite an eye opener. Unless, of course it was all edited to make him look like a diva. Although he used to work with the dad of a mate of mine. And apparently, he was very "thespian" back then too.
  14. Very popular around North Minehead during the National Bocialist era, IIRC. When that strange Mr. Hilter was running in the by-election. Not much fun in Stalingrad.
  15. Um, this new friend, he wasn't maybe.... I BELIEVE!!! I BELIEVE!!!!!! "And now I'll be wishing for world peace and an end to hunger..." "Ah, but you used up all three wishes-- one for each soundtrack you did! HAAHAAHHAAHHAA!!!" "So now there'll be no end to war... starvation still.... but there will be an expanded ToD....." Meh...... That'll do me!! haha. hey... wouldn't it be nice to think that maybe........ just maybe......... an expanded ToD could bring about world peace. As for the "limited" issue, maybe it's the sort of "limited edition" that the Star Wars OT dvd's were when they were released about two years ago in September or something, supposedly to be pulled off the shelves by the end of that year. They're still on sale now. Silly Lucasfilm. And as for the seperate release date of Raiders..... I think that boils down to the re-use fees for sure. Raiders was LSO, so I wouldn't be surprised if the individual release of Raiders is unlimited, and the box is limited, because of ToD and LC being recorded in the states. But, mind you, that's assuming that Concord will be approaching this release in the same way the smaller film music labels do. Maybe budget isn't such a concern to them.
  16. When the Superman Blue Box was announced, many people said the complete Superman II wouldn't fit on a single disc, but indeed it did. That disc runs just 14 seconds short of a full 80 minutes. But anyway, regardless of how many discs....... THIS IS AMAZING. It was just this afternoon that I was explaining to a new friend about my love for film music, and how rubbish it was that more Indiana Jones music wasn't available. I'm going to go and complain to them some more! See what gets announced tomorrow!
  17. Two John Williams "Rip-offs" which really stand up on their own, are of course Bill Conti's Masters of The Universe, and Jerry Goldsmith's theme for King Solomon's Mines. The Conti stuff is a little hard to completely label as a williams rip off, but I guess Star Wars and Superman are definitely rolled into one for that main theme, and of course the references to Holst echo the similar references Williams made in Star Wars, making Skeletor's "storm troopers" seem even more familiar! And as for King Solomon's Mines, I don't think anyone can deny that Canon were setting out to make an Indiana Jones film. Just without the script, cast or budget. But I love Jerry Goldsmith's music for the film. There are even days when I struggle to decide if I prefer his theme over the Raiders March. But I feel a little mean calling them rip offs. Obviously heavily influenced though.
  18. That's really interesting. You're definitely right. Although this is of little use, as I can't actually remember just right now what the proper legal stance is.... there is some sort of law stating that a sample can be used if it's under a certain length. I think. Or at least that law was in place while I was doing my music studies about 3/4 years ago.
