  1. Wow!! I'm getting more excited about this movie with every passing day. I can't wait. Anthony - searching for his socks 'cause they were just knocked off
  2. Definitely the 5th. I own the scores of Symphonies 1 - 6 and enjoy them all, but I have spent a great deal of time studying Mahler's 5th. It has everything from a tragic funeral march to glorious fugue passages in the Finale to the deeply moving Adagietto (which Mahler conceived as a love letter to his wife, Alma). I cannot say enough good things about the 5th Symphony. The 6th and 3rd round out my top 3. Anthony
  3. LOL At the time, I was working on the overnight stock crew at Target, so that's a pretty accurate description. Anthony, who now works at a bookstore with much more intelligent people
  4. If you play it on an instrument, that's true, but I'll bet if you put on the infamous "dum-dum" theme from Jaws everyone knows what it is. I tried this once at work, and the people I was working with honestly had no idea what I was listening to. I was stunned that they really had no clue. Anthony
  5. I was listening to For New York this morning and got about halfway through it before I remembered this thread and realized the triangle was playing almost nonstop throughout the whole piece. Not just a beat here and there, but some really great rhythms. As to Williams's other percussion, there's some great stuff. The first minute and half of "The Pheasant Hunt" from Empire of the Sun is written exclusively for percussion instruments. And don't forget the excellent percussion effects from "In the Idol's Temple" from Raiders. Anthony, "The Pheasant Hunt"
  6. The film version of Death in Venice makes excellent use of the Adagio from Mahler's 5th Symphony. Anthony
  7. I have a CD with four dance remixes of Duel of the Fates. Also, the Imperial March performed by Metallica. Anthony
  8. Another good choice would be Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra. You should be able to find it either with or without narration. It's been a while since I've heard it, but I believe most of the instruments are featured individually, as well as in groups (ie woodwinds, brass, strings, percussion). The narration serves to introduce and describe each instrument and grouping. Anthony, hoping we was of help

    Anthony, who agrees 100%
  10. But that's like cheating! Anthony, who's glad he can still find light-hearted threads somewhere on the Board
  11. I'm just happy to see that Swing, Swing, Swing is still winning! Anthony, glad he didn't vote for Swing, Swing, Swing
  12. "That was the sound of a tool chest . . . falling down the stairs." "KEVIN!"
  13. "You will remember to wash your hands before you eat anything?" "I shouldn't have said that." "Eat what? There's nothing here! Gandhi ate more than this!"
  14. I almost voted for 1941, but in the end, I decided Superman was the better piece. Anthony - who also almost voted for Midway.
  15. The Motorcade -- JFK Bizarre Wake -- The Missouri Breaks Auschwitz-Birkenau -- Schindler's List Freedom Train -- Rosewood As to the S(w)ing, S(w)ing, S(w)ing debate, I always understood that Williams wrote the piece to evoke the style and essence of the 40's era swing, just as Alf Clausen's music for the Simpsons is often written in the style of [insert musical genre here].
  16. I always loved the opening credits when I watched the show as a child. I always wished I could have a recording of it, never knowing until just a couple of years ago that it was a Williams piece. Anthony
  17. And yet, the opposite can also be true. Gustav Mahler wrote his "Tragic" Sixth Symphony and Kindertodtenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children) during one of the happiest times of his life. Anthony, who thought some might find this fact interesting.
  18. I've always enjoyed and admired Mr. Peck's work and was very sad when I heard the news this afternoon. Also, if any of you hadn't heard, news anchor David Brinkley also passed away today. He was 82. Anthony
  19. D. Wojo, try vgmusic.com. It's a website I discovered a few months ago that has literally hundreds of video game midi files. I'm sorry I can't tell you if the theme you're looking for is there for sure (I don't have a lot of time right now, what with finals week and all), but that's the one place I can think of that you'll have the best chance. Good luck. Anthony
  20. I'm glad I could do that for you. It is nice to be reminded once in a while that something one does can have that sort of effect on others. Thank you, Scott. Anthony
  21. Uni, I love the sentiment you express here. Would you mind if I used this in my signature? Anthony
  22. Just speculation, and probably a little far-fectched, but: If memory serves me, Owen didn't seem too interested in either C3PO or R2D2 (he tried to take the other R2 unit first), and only took the droids after some minor persuading from Luke. Perhaps Owen recognized the droids and didn't want to take them, but couldn't not take them without reason. He gave in, hoping against hope that it wouldn't be a bad decision. And when R2 started acting strange, Owen insists that the droids have their memories erased (most likely for the second time, just to be sure). If this is a valid scenario, I can only imagine the terror that Owen might have felt at the thought of the droid built by Anakin Skywalker in the hand's of Anakin's son. Anthony, hoping his point is not too obtuse, and feeling like an amatuer conspiracy theorist
  23. This could be the start of a vast inter-movie CGI cultural exchange program. We could get Aragag fighting crime with Spiderman; Scooby-Doo solving mysteries with Harry Potter and Co.; even dozens of little green Yodas oozing out of people's pores selling Gatorade! Anthony, fearing he may have crossed a line somewhere
  24. There are two moments for me that tie for first place. The first comes from Return of the Jedi with "The Emperor's Death". The combination of the Emperor's Theme and the Force Theme, the rising trumpets and chorus, followed immediately with the descending moans from the chorus as the Emperor falls . . . . *shudder* . . . genius. The second moment comes from The Empire Strikes Back with "Carbon Freeze". As Han is lowered into the chamber, the orchestra swells with Han and Leia's love theme, Leia finally tells Han "I love you" to which Han replies "I know". That moment for me is Star Wars. Anthony, who clearly loves the more soaring and operatic moments
  25. This is great. I wonder though if the process can work in reverse. Perhaps Lucas could include Gollum into Ep III. Gollum could run around on Tatooine chasing Anakin screaming "murderer!". LOL Anthony, Williams "Exsultate Justi"
