I hope Desplat wins - The Queen was easily the best score I've heard this year, and Desplat is one of the more interesting young(ish) composers.

Agreed. However, I find it very disturbing that it feels like Babel's been in every single nomination list this year.

My only hope about the matter is that it is illegible for the Oscars, which, by all means, it should be. The score was not bad, but the most (only?) notable use of music in the film is that of pre-existing material. Though Santoallala does have a 'For Your Concideration' album in circulation, so I'm not sure.

If not, It seems that he's on his way to winning his second consecutive Oscar, I think the only one Excpet Franz Waxman to do so (though I may be wrong about that). The only person who, I think, might steal his thunder (if nominated, that is), is Desplat. He seems to be a shoe-in at the Globes, who probably feel that they should compensate him for last year (when they made the huge error of awarding the best score with the best score award).

I'm going to kill someone if Santaolalla wins again this year. 2 oscars for a man of his talent is just stupid.

I'm pretty disappointed with these nominations, although I have not heard The Queen. But I think Arnold's nomination is just the British pride of Bond coming through and I've never even heard of Dreamgirls before. I'm pleasantly surprised to see Happy Feet though, as I've listened through about 1/3 of the album and it was good.

The Happy Feet score is very good. I haven't heard Casino Royal yet, but I love Arnold's music. None of the others look too impressive.

The ONLY reason he won before was "political correctness." It makes me sick.

He won because he had the catchiest feel-good theme. As simple as that. All the other scores are too complex for the dumb shits at the Academy.

There was a score in "Happy Feet?" All I can remember is that song Brittany Murphy sang and the rap song the little penguin sings ("Don't push me, 'cause I'm close to the edge.")

Anyway, I'm conceding my vote to Desplat. That score is the only one so far that has stayed in my memory. Babel's score sounded too much like Brokeback at too many points, so I think that might count against it (the same way it might have counted against John Williams for "Superman" after "Star Wars").

The Oscar score list is going to be interesting.

A friend of mine has come to me twice asking me about the music to a specific film. The first time was Brokeback Mountain, the second time was Babel. He asked me who the composer was. Before I told him I asked him what he thought of the score. Both times he said he was asking because he is a person who never notices music in a film, except for these two times. And dont worry, its not because he liked them, it is because everytime the music started playing he literally just could not stand it. He found both scores absolutely wretched. Is there something special about Gustavo's music? Like, is it a technical masterpeice or something. I listened to Babel, and I seriously just dont get why it is getting all of these nominations. It is really quite bad. I can understand someone enjoying Brokeback Mountain, its got a tune to it, its listenable, but Babel, if anyone can listen to that mess and enjoy it I would be very suprised. I hope Desplat wins.

Yay 100th post!

It'll probably come down to Casino Royale/The Queen. That is, if they have any sense over there.

 - Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

:) - Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

It'll probably come to that since both films have British roots.

It's solid though. And has some sense of dramatic progression. And that's something.

I tend to agree with this, but I do find some of the music to be generic and uninspired (particularly action cues based entirely around the James Bond theme - DAD, I'm looking in your direction!). But you're right, it is solid music and I love how he builds and builds on ideas. Sometimes they don't work, but it's doesn't matter. Actually, I find it similar with Howard Shore (at least LoTR); the scores have strong foundations but tend to fluctuate with very bland, uneccessary tied notes.

How the HELL did Babel get on there?

His score is nothing but an extra layer of sound-effects for the sound guys to put in the movie.

I'd say in terms of quality it should be Casino Royale vs. The Queen.

In terms of dumb voters, Babel may have a good chanse.

Casino Royale has really grown on me over the past few months, African Rundown kicks some serious percussive ass.  But The Queen I think works magic in the movie.
