Rank the Williams Scores You Own

BLUMENKOHL

Recommended Posts

We're not really talking album per se, so don't go ranking the 30 different releases of Star Wars. Rank Star Wars with your opinion of its best release, and only put it in once. But the catch still is that the score has to be in your collection in a non-compilation form.

So here I go:

1. Prisoner of Azkaban

2. Star Wars

3. Empire Strikes Back

4. Return of the Jedi

5. ET

6. Raiders of the Lost Ark

7. Far and Away

The Fury

Superman

1-6. The Star Wars Saga (Yes, yes, I know, I'm crazy for still viewing this all as one giant score and being unable to rank within the series. Deal with it, I have. ;) )

9. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

10. Raiders of the Lost Ark

11. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

12. Hook

13. ET

EDIT- I had a hard time finding the right place for CoS. So much I forgot to include it! Fixed. Maybe it's because it might not really be a Williams score... :P

I'm actually quite surprised/intrigued about a few trends:

More people have Sorcerer's Stone above Azkaban...which contradicts the recent poll.

Nixon seems to much more respected than I once thought. I thought I was the only one who found it good.

The more modern scores and mid to late 80s tend to decorate the bottom of lists.

Jaws, isn't in a lot of top 5's....which is amusing, considering the praise it gets.

And finally the biggest shock I found:

Schindler's List.

Speaks for itself if you look at the lists. I would never expect that.

I just started listening to Nixon, and was surprised by how good it is. It's dark and brooding, but I find it pretty engaging throughout. "The 1960s: The Turbulent Years" is of course a great, powerful track, and I love "Growing up in Whittier"...very unique atmosphere in that one.

I'm sure some of you will hate me for ranking some of his popular scores so low, but this is just my personal preference.

Okay, here it is:

1. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

2. Jurassic Park

3. Superman: The Movie

4. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

5. 1941 (mainly for Swing, Swing, Swing)

6. Jaws 2

7. E.T. The Extra Terrestrial

8. The Empire Strikes Back

9. Catch Me If You Can

10. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

11. Home Alone

12. The Terminal

13. Raiders of the Lost Ark

14. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

15. Revenge of the Sith

16. Hook

17. The Phantom Menace

18. Star Wars

19. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

20. Attack of the Clones

21. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

22. The Lost World: Jurassic Park

23. Empire of the Sun

24. American Journey

25. A.I. Artificial Intelligence

26. The Cowboys

27. Jaws

28. Close Encounters of the Third Kind

29. Minority Report

30. The Eiger Sanction

31. War of the Worlds

Some Extras: I predict Indiana Jones 4 will be in the top 15, probably even higher. I hope!!!

Another Extra: My favorite JW compilation CD is "By Request....The Best of John Williams and the Boston Pops". Great arrangements (particularly for "Theme from Jaws", "Suite from Close Encounters of the Third Kind", and "The Cowboys Overture".

Alas, one more extra: If Family Plot was released on CD, though I would have to listen to it more, it would probably find its way to the top 15, probably taking the place of Revenge of the Sith.

Presumed Innocent

The River

Rosewood

Accidental Tourist

Family Plot

Ray Barnsbury

5) Return of the Jedi

Honorable Mention: Superman, Jurassic Park, Prisoner of Azkaban, Schindler's List, and Star Wars.
