I agree, and while I can't in good conscience say Lucas is a better director than Spielberg, I find his films more interesting.

Spielberg is so good, it's easy to put him no. 1, but he's also so good it's easy not to, if that makes any sense. He's like Stephen King, or the Beatles. His influence is so pervasive, it's easy to overlook the craft behind the fun. That last BFI list was amusing.

I just realized, I think there exist just two directors of which I actually saw every movie they directed:

David Cronenberg and Quentin Tarantino.

These I think, I can rank.

For Cronenberg:

  1. Dead Ringers
  2. A History of Violence
  3. Naked Lunch
  4. The Fly
  5. Eastern Promises
  6. Crash
  7. M Butterfly
  8. Maps To The Stars
  9. Videodrome
  10. The Brood
  11. Crimes of the Future
  12. The Dead Zone
  13. Cosmopolis
  14. A Dangerous Method
  15. Spider
  16. Shivers
  17. Rabid
  18. Scanners
  19. eXisTenZ
  20. Fast Company

Tarantino ranking will follow.

Of the Cronenberg-films that I've seen, the only one I truly liked was THE FLY.

I can't even say that about Tarantino.

I adore Tarantino. Cronenberg, I've never really been a fan of, despite growing up with his films and perfectly able to recognize the qualities in them. I think I've seen them all, except for FAST COMPANY and STEREO.

Where's THE DEAD ZONE on your list, G?

Right! Forgot that one. Added.

I don't like all of his movies. But about half of them made such a big impression on me, that I call him my favourite director.

STEREO

Stereo and the old Crimes of the Future I don't really count. As these are rather student art films.

To me he’s a scam artist. Sorry.

The only film by him that I kind of like is Inglorious Basterds. That’s where he came the closest to making a real, serious film.

No, he seriously falls asleep from his films. :)

I'm not NOF, but Tarkovsky is GREAT! Shame he was taken from us way too soon. Love the classics, of course -- SOLARIS, STALKER, THE MIRROR. But you can't really go wrong with the other four either. And those Artemiev scores! Man, goosebumps galore.

I've gone from 'hate' to 'indifference' in regards to Woody Allen films over 30+ years, so that's some progress, but one of these days, I'm going to attempt again. I do like SEINFELD and CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, so presumably there should be something to build on there -- in that nervous, existential Jewish humour, the awkward situations and all that. I'm more curious to see if there are any visual ideas that stand out, though, that I've previously overlooked due to my distaste of the dialogue-heavy material and the frenzied characters.

I did watch COUP DE CHANCE last year, which was okay. A finely tuned romance triangle that neither blew me away nor bored me.

So far I only like Solyaris, even though Tarkovsky himself was not so happy with it. Last time I watched it, I saw a lot of Blade Runner in it, thematically that is. The film's ending is heartbreaking.

I liked Steven Soderbergh's version. And Stanisław Lem's book is great.

Lem said that none of the two films - Tarkovsky's and Soderbergh's - reflected the book's thematic emphasis on the limitations of human rationality.

Crimes of the Future

I somehow managed to sit through the whole movie, just to see how it would end.

It was an exercise in patience, and I'm not sure my goodwill towards Cronenberg will extend to his next bizarro venture.

Might be worth watching so you can scream to the heavens—or your upstairs neighbour, as the case may be—"Why do they keep giving this guy obscene amounts of money to make crap?!"

Is anyone still stuck in the noughties and calling Zack Snyder a "visionary"?

Haven't really understood this thread.

Is it about our favorite director and our favorite top 5 films of his?

 if it is:

Steven Spielberg

1. E.T

2. Schindler's List

3. Jurassic Park

4. Indiana Jones and the temple of doom

5. Hook

It was originally supposed to be about our top five Martin Scorsese films, but now we’re just making it up as we go along. Tomorrow I’m doing my thirty favourite colours.

Denis Villeneuve:

  1. Prisoners;
  2. Arrival;
  3. Blade Runner 2049;
  4. Dune: Part Two
  5. Sicario;
  6. Enemy;
  7. Dune;

But I like all of them to various degrees, some more (Prisoners), others less (Dune 1). Haven't seen his early independent movies, but I do wish to watch Incendies one of these days.

Fun fact: Denis has a daughter who is also a filmmaker. She did a short movie about her childhood:

The version of the board that existed when I first joined had the ability to add subtitles to threads. I had spammed out Top 5 threads for several directors and composers way back then. This thread was supposed to be about your Top 5 Scorsese films.
