Schilkeman 1,015
1 hour ago, JTN said: THX 1138 and AMERICAN GRAFFITI are masterpieces. I agree, and while I can't in good conscience say Lucas is a better director than Spielberg, I find his films more interesting. Spielberg is so good, it's easy to put him no. 1, but he's also so good it's easy not to, if that makes any sense. He's like Stephen King, or the Beatles. His influence is so pervasive, it's easy to overlook the craft behind the fun. That last BFI list was amusing. JTN

GerateWohl 4,490
I just realized, I think there exist just two directors of which I actually saw every movie they directed: David Cronenberg and Quentin Tarantino. These I think, I can rank. For Cronenberg: Dead Ringers A History of Violence Naked Lunch The Fly Eastern Promises Crash M Butterfly Maps To The Stars Videodrome The Brood Crimes of the Future The Dead Zone Cosmopolis A Dangerous Method Spider Shivers Rabid Scanners eXisTenZ Fast Company Tarantino ranking will follow. JTN 2,255
Of the Cronenberg-films that I've seen, the only one I truly liked was THE FLY. I can't even say that about Tarantino.
Thor 7,670
I adore Tarantino. Cronenberg, I've never really been a fan of, despite growing up with his films and perfectly able to recognize the qualities in them. I think I've seen them all, except for FAST COMPANY and STEREO. Where's THE DEAD ZONE on your list, G? GerateWohl

But about half of them made such a big impression on me, that I call him my favourite director. 21 minutes ago, Thor said: STEREO Stereo and the old Crimes of the Future I don't really count. As these are rather student art films.

That’s where he came the closest to making a real, serious film.

Thor 7,670
I'm not NOF, but Tarkovsky is GREAT! Shame he was taken from us way too soon. Love the classics, of course -- SOLARIS, STALKER, THE MIRROR. But you can't really go wrong with the other four either. And those Artemiev scores! Man, goosebumps galore.

Thor 7,670
I've gone from 'hate' to 'indifference' in regards to Woody Allen films over 30+ years, so that's some progress, but one of these days, I'm going to attempt again. I do like SEINFELD and CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, so presumably there should be something to build on there -- in that nervous, existential Jewish humour, the awkward situations and all that. I'm more curious to see if there are any visual ideas that stand out, though, that I've previously overlooked due to my distaste of the dialogue-heavy material and the frenzied characters. I did watch COUP DE CHANCE last year, which was okay. A finely tuned romance triangle that neither blew me away nor bored me. JTN 2,255
I liked Steven Soderbergh's version. And Stanisław Lem's book is great. 39 minutes ago, A24 said: So far I only like Solyaris, even though Tarkovsky himself was not so happy with it. Lem said that none of the two films - Tarkovsky's and Soderbergh's - reflected the book's thematic emphasis on the limitations of human rationality. Haven't seen his early independent movies, but I do wish to watch Incendies one of these days. Fun fact: Denis has a daughter who is also a filmmaker. She did a short movie about her childhood: https://variety.com/2022/film/festivals/salome-villeneuve-venice-1235367691/
