  3. 3. What is likely to be the biggest bombs of the 2013 Summer Boxoffice

Recommended Posts

I saw some early projections that Warner Bros is predicting $100 mill opening weekend for MOS. They don't know if it will catch Iron Man 3's domestic total though.

Fast and the Furious and Star Trek are both close to passing that 200 million mark, Iron Man close to the 400 million mark. F&F6 at this point looks like it could cruise past Oz to take 2nd place for this year.

As predicted both Star Trek and Fast & Furious 6 both have reached blockbuster status. The Purge won this weekend. It cost just 3 million to make.

Well those of you who predicted Man of Steel to be the top film are wrong. The film which is being lauded as breaking boxoffice records actually underperformed greatly. It fell short from the 139 million dollar prediction. It's a consensus Rotten tomato. I predict it will suffer a 65% or higher drop this weekend. Iron Man will break 400 million this week and looks to be the strongest superhero this summer.

I forgot the main post had a "biggest bomb" category this year (which was a great idea). Looks like I voted for World War Z, though I guess After Earth will actually be the biggest bomb, eh? (Unless Pacific Rim somehow massively underperforms)

don't forget The Lone Ranger

I think Johnny Depp alone will ensure it's not the biggest bomb. Even if the movie is total shit, more people will buy a ticket to it than bought a ticket to After Earth

MOS will surpass 200 million this weekend but Monsters Univ. will take the #1 spot. The battle for second place will be between MOS and WWZ.

Incidently I don't think the MOS was ever referred to in this film as the Man of Steel. But he was referred to that in another film.

I couldn't be happier for Zack and his reboot. Roll on the sequel!

I think the sequel will be a lot of fun, now that all the origin stuff is out of the way.

Maybe, but how are they going to top it on the spectacle level? Where do you after the finale of the first one? Is there anything you could do with a story?

I think you have to tell a more intimate story with more personal stakes rather than global ones.

You can't have another Kryptonian arrive and have another god vs god battle, so you have to find a way to make Superman be matched on an intellectual level, I suppose - or have his powers removed.

yet origin stories are generally consider the best of the lot.

I think whether it's an origin story or not, a film is only as good as it's story allows it to be.

I liked X-Men 2 more than 1, Spider-man 2 more than 1, and Dark Knight more than Batman Begins, personally.

But of course I liked Matrix more than Reloaded, Casino Royale more than Quantum of Solace....

I once wrote a sketch of a fanfic that had an interstellar adventure bend to it and the action in the middle section happened around a red sun.

I bet you anything Lex Luthur will be in the sequel....if there is one.

Still not sure what to think of Laurence Fishburn as Perry White, despite that I like Laurence Fishburn.

Monsters University will be the winner this weekend, World War came in with second with a $60+ million weekend.

It looks like IM 3 should take the summer Domestically. I can't see any other film doing over $400 million.

Second viewing of MoS and the theatre was packed again. Looks like a big hit then, so Warner must be hugely relieved. I think I forgot to mention last week as well that some stupid inconsiderate bitch and her fella brought a fucking newborn in with them, which proceeded to actually cry about twenty minutes into the movie. I'm telling you that thing was eight weeks old. Sometimes I think shootings at the cinema are well justified.

That film was half arsed

any yet it has a set piece that Man of Steel doesn't even come close to having.

It's true.

But in hindsight and with the new film to compare it to, the best blockbuster set piece of its time was nowhere near enough to save that vanilla effort from obscurity.

not sure there any film will make 300 million either, MOS is the only film within reach and it will drop another 60+ % next week, not a criticism of the film it's just each week brings another event picture.

next up White House Down, and The Heat, both will have nice openings.

Why didnt the WWZ trailer show any zombies? are they embarrassed?

Why didnt the WWZ trailer show any zombies? are they embarrassed?

because this film isn't about zombies eating people, it's about them biting people, it's a different concept. There is very little gore. but there is lots of tension. it's one of the most satisfying summer thrillers. In fact this has been a pretty good summer, with the exception of MoS disappointing me, I've been mostly happy this summer.
