Quintus 5,399
If there's no lore it'll pale in comparison to the original, for me. The hints at something ancient and 'bigger' than what we might comprehend were key in TD.

Koray Savas 2,251
S1 was essentially a contemporary noir with the murder and case solving stuff. Love the tone and dread of it all. Considering this one is about fraud in the water industry in LA, I think we can expect the same style. It could be a modern day Chinatown.

Incanus 5,722
What he's doing is quite risky (something completely different from season 1), but in the end, that's the most interesting choice. I hope it won't backfire on him.I am actually glad they left the story of the 1st season well alone. It was so self contained it would have felt futile to send the damaged pair of friends on another case after that traumatic experience. Also I loved the underlying horror elements with hints at the cultists and occult that kept popping up.I like the idea of an anthology series where each season is a self contained story featuring one long story arc. Something different.

Barnald 365
Can't really say I'm surprised. The casting, setting and synopsis didn't do much for me, and I didn't plan on watching it at least until it hit Blu-ray. I probably won't bother now. Quite early on you got the feeling Cohle and Heart were up against something that defied ordinary policework. And it broke them. The flashback structure was also very effective in that show. Dixon Hill 4,234
I'm on board after the first episode. Sure, maybe not as immaculate as the last one, but unmistakably from the same vein of goodness.

Jay 37,421
True Detective 2x01 The Western Book of the DeadMeh.The first episode of the first season of True Detective was great because right away you were introduced to two likeable and interesting main characters in Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, and right away they get an interesting case to work on: A serial killer is murdering young girls in a ritualistic way. On top of that you got the great Louisianna setting, and it was set in the past (20 years ago) to boot. Here we get a much more bland setting - modern day Los Angeles, and our 4 main characters are all unlikeable twats. You get Colin Farrel as an alcoholic bully and terrible father, Rachel McAdams as a gambling and possibly alcohol addict who butts into her sister's life instead of letting her be and keeps everyone including her man and dad at a distance, Taylor Kitsch who is all mopey and needs viagra to bang his hot girlfriend (I saw no convincing reason why he even would want to be in a relationship with her?), and Vince Vaughn who is just another generic money hungry mob boss. Yawn. And the case that brings them all together is meh - some guy got killed and his body was left somewhere else.I have faith in Pizzolatto but so far there is no indication yet this will end up being even half as good as Season 1. Jay 37,421
There were some cool shots, but so many dialogue-based scenes were just boring. Glóin the Dark 1,229
I thought it started to get quite gripping towards the end. I would have watched the next episode right away given the opportunity. Other than that, it seemed pretty conventional so far, at least by the standards one would expect of True Detective. Favourite bit was the woman who was pulled over in the car attempting to deny that she'd been drinking. I absolutely have not...have not have had anything to drink... It's difficult to trip over one's words deliberately and plausibly like that!
Jay 37,421
Yup, she was good. But it's ridiculous he'd get suspended over a claim she made - presuming she has no evidence.

KK 3,307
I watched it yesterday. It was a competent, well-directed episode without the appeal of season 1. Everything feels even more oppressive in a way, though I wouldn't say overwhelmingly so. Things did start to get interesting by the end, and I'm confident the season will pick up.Liked the main titles sequence, though the song seemed like a parody of itself. Jay 37,421
I didn't like any of the music in the episode, from the opening title song to T-Bone Burnett's drum-based underscore, to that Lana Del Rey knockoff at the end. Blech.
Dixon Hill 4,234
Well... I for one liked it!Maybe it's just a visual theme that Pizzolatto likes, but if they keep up the shots of industrial chemical/gas plants or whatever in future seasons, I'm gonna start thinking that's the key to the overarching mystery that the final season will be about! Jay 37,421
I'm certainly planning on watching the next episode and unless it goes horribly awry the entire season, all I'm saying is there is not a single thing shown yet that has "hooked" me on this season's story or characters.-I don't care about a dead city manager and the fact that that makes things hard for Vince Vaughn's mob boss character-I don't care about Colin Farrel's relationship with his son-I don't care about Rachel McAdams, her boyfriend, her sister, her dad-I don't care about Twilight Werewolf guy or why he can't get it upetc

A24 4,355
Isnt this how people felt about episode one of season one?Nope. Right from the very first episode of Season 1, you knew you were in for something special. Here, with Season 2, the first episode felt very run-of-the-mill. Of course, you could say: "Give it time, it's just the first episode, for fuck's sake!" and you'd be right. As I said in one of my previous posts, I still think it can get better. That being said, for a show with each season having only 8 episodes, you'd expect them to make each one of them count. That just wasn't the case here.It took a few eppies for me to get into season one. I liked the show but it's not something that keeps lingering in my mind. It was entertaining (for the most part) but it doesn't go further than that. In my opinion, of course. I'm not waiting anxiously for the next season but if it crosses my path I will watch it.Alex
