#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
I will be attending the concert on 9 July http://www.moviesinconcert.nl/index.php?page=view&id=7944 https://concertgebouw.nl/concerten/the-lord-of-the-rings-in-concert-the-fellowship-of-the-ring The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring Live The Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra & Brabant Choir conducted by Ludwig Wicki - Concertgebouw, Grote Zaal Program Info: Gelders Orkest Ludwig Wicki, conductor Brabant Koor Vocaal Talent Nederland The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring Original Score Performed Live with Film - Composed by Howard ShoreComposer Howard Shore brings J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary imagination to vivid life with his Academy®- and Grammy® Award-winning score to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Shore’s music expresses Peter Jackson’s film as an immense symphonic work—a uniquely developed vision drawn from centuries of stylistic tendencies. The music of The Lord of the Rings is counted among film music’s most complex and comprehensive works. This unique performance sets the score to the film, but allows the music to bear the narrative weight, creating a wholly new and dramatic live concert experience. Shore’s score not only captures Fellowship’s sweeping emotion, thrilling vistas and grand journeys, but also echoes the very construction of Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Styles, instruments and performers collected from around the world provide each of Tolkien’s cultures with a unique musical imprint. In operatic fashion, these musical worlds commingle, sometimes combining forces for a culminated power, other times violently clashing…and always bending to the will of the One Ring and its own ominous family of themes. Says Howard Shore, "My first score for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring, was the beginning of my journey into the world of Tolkien and I will always hold a special fondness for the music and the experience." - Doug Adams Doug Adams is a Chicago-based musician and writer. He is the author of the book The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films.
mstrox 6,654
I saw FOTR at Wolf Trap, VA last September, and am still holding my breath hoping that TTT will be scheduled for this summer - nothing yet. I plan on going, with somewhat lowered expectations than previously.

Jay 37,421
TTT live was awesome, tons of music restored that PJ altered in the actual film. Very cool experience. FOTR was great too, of course!

mstrox 6,654
I came out of FOTR wishing I had seen the LOTR Symphony instead - the sound effects and dialogue take a little bit of the oomph out of listening to the orchestra. I figure with TTT, I may pay a little less for a worse seat, or even a seat out on the lawn, and enjoy it as a unique moviegoing experience rather than a concert. Incanus 5,722
I had a brilliant experience with the FotR live a few years ago here in Finland. A magical experience. One of our members here (hornist) played in the orchestra, the Tampere Filharmonia, and it was mesmerizing to hear them. So flawless was the work in fact that I sometimes forgot that they were there. Since The Netherlands is playing Argentina on that same evening the people at the Concertgebouw have kindly moved the concert one hour forward. Also attendees are invited to stay after and follow the game on their large screen! That's quite an eclectic and interesting proposition. First 3 hours of The Lord Of The Rings, followed by 90 minutes (and possibly an extra 30 minutes + penalty shootout) I'm really hoping the orchestra will stay too and they will perform bits of FOTR live during the game! Mr. Breathmask 555
Observations:The performance was excellent. There were times where I almost felt like I was listening to the original recording. Projection suffered from ghosting, turning some of the more motion-heavy sequences into a giant blur. This was unfortunate, but I was there for the music, not for the movie.- Bigger choir when we first see the Last Alliance.- Flaming Red Hair was part of the soundtrack and not performed by the orchestra.- Extra music for Saruman using his Palantír. It ends after Sauron's "build me an army" quote. It's a soft introduction of the Isengard rhythm. - No restored music for the shadow world on Weathertop.- Alternate music for the summoning of the Bruinen.- Intermission came at the same place as the EE's disc break. After the intermission, the Fellowship theme from the council of Elrond was reprised before the screen came back on. This was very nice.- The journey through Moria started with extra choir.- No restored music for the shadow world atop Amon Hen.The best parts:- The very first rendition of the History of the Ring theme over the film's title.- The wizard fight with just the choir.- "Behold the great realm and dwarf city of Dwarrowdelf."- "You shall not pass!"There was a massive standing ovation at the end, which lasted quite a while. And deservedly so. This was a great night out!

Mr. Breathmask 555
I hope they do TTT and RotK in the near future. At the end of the ovation, I was almost hoping for them to do Requiem for a Tower to the TTT trailer as an encore. I think I would have enjoyed that. #SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
How was the music versus dialogue/SFX? The balance was pretty good in Rotterdam
Mr. Breathmask 555
It varied. Some parts were drowned out by the music, but never the other way round. I actually welcomed the score-heavy 'mix'. I preferred having the music upfront. After all, I'd already seen this movie about a hundred times, but I'd never heard the full film score live. #SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
I agree, at some points the dialogue and SFX were completely drowned out by the musaic, and that's a GOOD thing!A really great concert. I had a great balcony view of the orchestra and screen.Like ROTK i found my attention constantly going back and forth between either the movie or the orchestra. Usually the movie during the more subdued bits. The performance was excellent. and nicely enhanced by the Concertgebouws famous acoustics. (it sounded better then the ROTK concert last year in Rotterdam). Some scenes really packed a huge emotional whallop with the music played live and so up front. The aftermath of Gandalf's death. Boromir's final stand, and ofcourse The Breaking! The action tracks were really ace too. The Uruk Hai theme really resonated.
