THE NAKED GUN TRILOGY – 3 disc set

Music by Ira Newborn

LLLCD 1303

Limited Edition of 2000 units

Retail Price: $34.98

Produced for La-La Land Records by Dan Goldwasser and Neil S. Bulk

Mastered by Doug Schwartz at Mulholland Music

Liner Notes by Daniel Schweiger

Art Direction by Dan Goldwasser

La-La Land Records and Paramount Pictures are proud to present a 3 disc set of Ira Newborn’s classic scores to THE NAKED GUN: FROM THE FILES OF POLICE SQUAD!, THE NAKED GUN 2 ½ THE SMELL OF FEAR, AND THE NAKED GUN 33 1/3 THE FINAL INSULT. Jam packed with fantastic heroic themes, action packed, heart pounding tunes and sultry, sexy film noir cop thriller music circa 1978, Mr. Newborn’s diversified score is right up there with AIRPLANE! and TOP SECRET as some of the best music this genre has ever offered. While only some of the first 2 films scores were previously released, the third film in the series is making its world debut in this set! Also featured in this collection are songs from the various films, including “I’m Into Something Good,” “I Guess I’m Just Screwed,” the Academy Award’s show-stopping number “This Could Be the Start of Something” performed by Pia Zadora, and, arguably the greatest rendition of “The Star Spangle Banner” ever sung, performed by the great Enrico Pallazzo (a never-before-heard prerecorded performance)!

Naked Gun and it’s sequel, 2 ½, have been completely remastered and expanded greatly. Mike Matessino had the opportunity to go back and remix the first film’s score to its original glory! The 36 page booklet features extensive liner notes by Daniel Schweiger that take you behind the scenes of the funny films and their magnificent scores. Composer Ira Newborn and the magical film making team of ZAZ (David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker) also lend some insight into these comedy classics. Dan Goldwasser’s art direction bring the zaniness altogether in one attractive looking package.

This 3 cd set goes on sale next week July 15, 2014 at 12 pm pst. This is our only new release for this week.

PLEASE NOTE: We MIGHT have a limited amount of signed copies autographed by Ira Newborn available at the time of the release. There is a 50/50 chance of us having them, though, there's only a 10 percent chance of that.

Keep watching our facebook page for updates.

La-La Land Records and Paramount Pictures proudly present acclaimed composer Ira Newborn’s (DRAGNET, UNCLE BUCK, MY BLUE HEAVEN, INNOCENT BLOOD) original motion picture scores to THE NAKED GUN TRILOGY (THE NAKED GUN, THE NAKED GUN 2 ½: THE SMELL OF FEAR and THE NAKED GUN 33 1/3: THE FINAL INSULT) starring Leslie Nielsen, Priscilla Presley and George Kennedy, and directed by David Zucker (NAKED GUN, NAKED GUN 2 ½) and Peter Segal (NAKED GUN 33 1/3). This 3-CD set features the original scores to all three NAKED GUN films, with the scores to the first two films remastered and greatly expanded beyond previous releases and the world-premiere release of NAKED GUN 33 1/3.

Mr. Newborn’s robust orchestral scores to this classic comedy franchise, (created by the legendary ZAZ team of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker), are a wondrous explosion of thrills, suspense, high-octane action and passionate romance – and then there’s that iconic big-band-swing NAKED GUN theme, as iconic, indelible and bigger-than-life than Lt. Frank Drebin himself. This collection features bonus tracks and songs from the films as well, including “I’m in to Something Good,” “I Guess I’m Just Screwed,” the Pia Zadora-performed Academy-Awards show-stopper “This Could be the Start of Something” and quite possibly the greatest rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” ever recorded, sung by opera great Enrico Pallazzo (in a never-before-heard prerecorded performance).

Produced by Dan Goldwasser and Neil S. Bulk and mastered by Doug Schwartz, this 3-CD limited edition release of 2000 units features a 36-Page Booklet with exclusive liner notes by writer Daniel Schweiger, including comments from the composer and filmmakers. Crime-stoppingly fun art design is courtesy of Dan Goldwasser. A must-have-listen for the home, the car, at work, and extended stays at Statesville Prison.

Ordered an autograph copy; I'm looking forward to this box. Addams Family and The Naked Gun - I guess all that's missing now is Austin Powers!

Yes, it's terrific stuff. You can keep playing the title theme, you never get tired from it (although the first disc's extras are weirdly sequenced - why not make track 29 track 26?). The Drebin hero theme is good, though it doesn't do as much for me as it used to, but it's more than compensated for by the love theme, the Nordberg murder by cake theme, and especially all the various homages - I love the Kamen-styled action music on the second disc. And the third disc provides enough variation, and clearly a different approach, so that three discs never become tiring as a listening experience. Very recommended, but I guess you have to be familiar with the films and their music though.

We recently re-watched these 3 films in the early months of the pandemic and boy does the first one hold up as a fantastic comedy.  The sequels have plenty of great moments but were overall really all over the place with tone and pacing and the third one had some really specific references to the politics of the time that would go over the head of anyone young watching now

The scores by Newborn, however, were all great!

That's a good summary of the trilogy @Jay. The first is an unbeatable gem, while the others have individual highlights but aren't as consistently brilliant.

You do notice pop culture and specific film references start creeping in more and more with each film (though nowhere near as shameless as the garbage passed off in the "spoof movie" genre these days).

"Best actor in a Columbus film?" is a good example. A joke that was probably only relevant the year the third film was released. Whereas every joke, sight gag and all the physical comedy in the first film is timeless.

Yup, exactly!

Same deal with Airplane/Airplane 2, iirc

Oh man, I haven't seen either of those in years - we were going to watch them next after the Naked Guns but never got around to it

These films are inextricably tied to my childhood/youth. Love them dearly, although I haven't seen any of them in decades. Ira Newborn was 'hot' name back then; haven't heard from him in probably two decades.

I always laugh my ass off at the airbag gag in the first film. According to the audio commentary, that gag was actually some "dated" reference to concerns over cheap airbags back in the 80s. That context would be completely lost on viewers now but it remains hilarious simply because the visuals are so absurd.

A great example of how the jokes are so layered that even if you don't know about that context, it's still funny for other reasons. Same with all the gags about cop movie cliches; you don't need to have seen any cop movies to understand the gags, but you'll have a deeper appreciation of the humour if you have.

Last I heard he was teaching! I read a post somewhere from one of his students who said he's always happy to discuss the scores.

Totally agree.  The first film is much more timeless - as was the original Police Squad! show, from what I recall (I've only seen it once)

The sequels really went into pop culture references harder than I recalled them doing until the recent rewatch, perhaps because they used up all their more broad ideas in the first movie?

I see, thanks. So he's gone the "Trevor Jones route". Good for him, I suppose, but I miss his voice.

The only ones I've heard outside the film are Ferris Bueller and the Naked Guns.  I'm not sure if any others ever got score albums or not.

He's scored many films I've seen - Sixteen Candles, Weird Science, Dragnet, Planes Trains and Automobiles, Caddyshack II, Uncle Buck, My Blue Heaven, Ace Ventura, Mallrats, and Baseketball - but I don't remember a thing about the score in those movies

Anybody remember Sledge Hammer?

Of course! Great Elfman theme too. But Newborn wasn't involved in that, AFAIK.

People often forget that Newborn was musical director of THE BLUES BROTHERS, even providing a few snippets of score inbetween the songs, if memory serves.

In general, the guy scored a bunch of the seminal movies of my youth - many of which are listed by Jay above - and I will always love him for it.

Why wasn't Sledge Hammer on Music For A Darkened Theater 1 or 2?

Don't know. Maybe some rights issues, which I tend to know very little about.

But a number of small Elfman themes didn't make the cut for either of those albums, beyond SLEDGE HAMMER. They remain unreleased to this day.

No he wasn't - I mentioned the show because the humour is kind of similar to Police Squad! / The Naked Gun.

Ah!

By the way, the SLEDGE HAMMER theme DID get a release, kinda. If memory serves, a "cover version" was released on one of those TELEVISION GREATEST HITS albums.

On the Arrow Blu-ray of Sixteen Candles, there's an interview with Ira where it's revealed in the credits that he teaches at NYU. I'm also hoping that his Sixteen Candles score gets released eventually
