A24 4,346
Don't act so surprised, Bruce. CD players are known to have the shortest lifespan of all hi-fi gear.
Jurassic Shark 12,088
What about minidisc players? Mattris
A24 4,346
I've heard they were quite reliable but I guess it also depends on the model (deck vs. portable). Similar to a PC's hard disk. Official life expectancy is only 5 years but plenty of people use their PC's hard disk for more than 10 years. And a minidisc will probably last longer depending on how much you use it, of course. Unlucky Bastard 7,782
Yeah I dunno. Those older terminals seem to stuggle at accommodating 12 gauge speaker wire, which is the thickness you'd want if you're running power hungry speakers.
A24 4,346
Which is what they say about my main speakers, that they need power. This amp in only 45 Watts per channel at 8 ohm. I don't really play loud so it could be enough. OTOH, it's an old amp, and even though it looks like new, there's a good chance there will be issues one of these years. Jurassic Shark 12,088
It was stuck in shipping back to the store for two months, probably due to covid chaos, then at the repair shop for two more months... don't know yet if they actually fixed the problem. Jurassic Shark 12,088
Yes, my old Nad C350, but it takes a couple of minutes to warm up. One of the big capacitors charges way too slowly, making the amp interpret it as a short circuit on one of the speaker outputs until it's fully charged. Needless to say, this also seems to affect the sound during playback.

bruce marshall 1,315
Not much actually. Not like I turn them all on. The amp.has energy conservation built in. Unlucky Bastard 7,782
I just bought a DAC, the SMSL M200. Does everything I need. Didn't need that MQA shit that the higher end ones seem to spruik, so I'm fine with this. The reviews were good too. I figured the price at AU$385 was fine. Unlucky Bastard 7,782
I just hope my new DAC is good. Some bloke in another thread said I can listen to music on the internet, and I can plug my computer into it and essentially make my computer a hi-fi component. Who'd'a thunk? A24 4,346
Is that SMSL a network player? I know they got them too, with a DAC combined and everything. I also know that I don't have a network player but I have a spotify app on my OLED TV.
Unlucky Bastard 7,782
I don't think it is. It has bluetooth, which is nifty if I want to play something from my telephone. My Rotel DAB+ tuner has a network player in it through DTS Play-Fi, which I find a bit clunky. From now on, I'll probably just use my computer as a network player and play all the internet audio stuff from there.
Unlucky Bastard 7,782
It's a beaut! Also had to muck around with the driver software, but got it working eventually. Basically this enables my laptop to become a network player component in my hi-fi system. Very nice. I'm wondering also does something like this also eliminate the need for a CD player? Since my computer already has an optical drive anyway...
A24 4,346
Yes, via USB, and if you don't mind the noise computers makes when reading discs. You can use a cheap DVD player with digital outputs as a CD transport. You S.M.S.L. DAC will do the rest.

Unlucky Bastard 7,782
I haven't been able to try any hi-res audio yet. Where do they sell DSD files? The Bluetooth is a nice feature. Love playing YT through my hi-fi, even though it isn't hi-res audio, but it's nice hearing it through a fuller system.

Jay 37,373
I believe WinAmp can handle it all (might have to install a plugin), but you could also try Audacious or Musicbee
Unlucky Bastard 7,782
Hmm getting some weird distortions from the computer via USB, like it's clipping at certain points. The audio stream from my phone via Bluetooth sounds fine though. Is USB really that good an interconnect or does computer audio via USB introduce unexpected anomalies? Because I really think either the computer or USB are the weak links in the chain here.
