"Devil's Tower" theme from CE3K

I'm not sure which one you're referring to. Could you post the tracks and times where it can be found?

Morn wrote:

"I think I know what he means, the theme in the track The Mountain."

Thanks for clearing that up, Morn. Ricard, I login from my job where I don't have access to my JW collection, sorry. Basically, it is the short, slow theme whose first three notes are heard at the opening of "The Mountain."

It is heard in extended form just before the more famous five-note fanfare arrives at the end credits and just after that in a bewitching, Rachmaninov-like arrangement that is really the dynamic climax of the score.

Sometimes this theme is only suggested by using just the "mysterious" chordal motif which accompanies/is linked to it, at moments dealing with Roy Neary's obsession. It also works well in combination with that "Beethoven's 5th"-type motif. Again, it's a theme which demonstrates the influence of Herrmann on JW. All the themes in this score seem to have an organic connection and unity as if they are all part of some longer song unheard (not the disco version!).

Thanks, that's what I thought. It's also been one of my favorite Williams themes for the last 25 years ;). Although I've always associated it more with the fascination the characters felt towards the unknown.

NB: Just want to point out some level of uncertainty regarding the category of 'themes'. If this applies strictly to themes, rather than CD tracks, then two of my responses are invalid. However such a narrow restriction tends to discriminate against non-thematic music.

When this topic is finally done, I suggest someone with the patience and interest compile a record sheet or graph of everyone's responses and see if we can get a sense of what favourites we all have in common. That'd be neat.

Varese's releases are made with love for the music. Sony is just after money.

Hmmm well for everyone its about the money. The difference is Sony gives the artist ZERO respect with its releases.

At least other companies maintain the dignity of the original score. :)

That's not true, Varese sometimes makes releases which they know will make no money, but because the guy who owns Varese loves the score :)
